DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Game crashes on embark
« on: October 03, 2010, 05:43:48 am »
Sometimes it does that if you try to embark on too large a region for your CPU to handle.

Or not enough RAM, or too many embark items (yes, it's possible).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Critical Labor Failure
« on: October 03, 2010, 05:43:14 am »
Well, I know that if my dwarfs stop listening to me, they tend to have a critical existence failure instead of a critical labor failure.  Usually the existence failure is magma related.

All of your forts must be incredibly short lived, in that case.

Actually, I don't have that issue.  I regularly hit 20 years.

I didn't mean the entirety, just the really awesome cities/towers, like Minas Tirith. Also, it is incredibly awesome that you have maps for almost everything from LoTR, though this makes me ponder something. Is it just maps of LoTR, or maps of things from oh lets say, The Sillmilarian. Morgoth's two bases would be fun and Fun to build.
Alright, then I won't do Barad-dûr.  I guess I have to think of something then still :(

But yes, hello.

Wait, the above reply was meant as a joke. I didn't mean to stop you from building Barad-dur.  :'( There's space enough in the world for many Barad-durs. And Orthancs. And Towers of Ecthelion. And Sorcery Towers. And Cirith-Ungols. And lots of others.

An idea comes to mind, though.
What about a complete recreation of Moria, I mean, Khazad-dum? It should include at least an artifact stone door (the Doors of Durin), a fully engraved chamber containing the bookkeeper's office(the Chamber of Mazarbul), a gargantuan chamber supported by endless rows of pillars(the seventh hall), a single-tile-wide bridge spanning a chasm(Bridge of Khazad-dum), and a great gate of stone and metal that overlooks a brook and a waterfall (Drimrill Gate). Oh, and don't forget the Endless Stair ;)

Took too long writing this reply! And yes, Khazad-dum is a MUST!

Most of my LoTR maps are just from LoTR, I've had no luck finding detailed Sillmilarion maps.  I'm sure they're out there.  I don't really want to build something from LoTR in all seriousness, I mean, it'd be really cool, but it wouldn't be.

Of course, I could use one of my own (created by me) maps/worlds and be able to put more detail into it than the game is capable of with no limitations of silly things like having to get it right.
Because if I built Minas Tirith and got it wrong even slightly, everyone would know.
If I built Blackstone City* and got it wrong, no one would notice.

*Blackstone city is, funny enough, a mining-based city.  It would fit so well.  They even have a volcano problem.

I'll still probably build Khazad-dum too.

"The Americans" must have got you. I think she means elves

Elves.  Hmm.

Although, it is pretty damn impressive to watch a 30 tile wide river fall 3 z-levels and vanish into a hole half that wide.

1490
I have perfectworld and a separate program which lets me build highly detailed maps that I can shrink and then import to PW.  (I'm talking map sizes in the 200mb range.)  It would be a few hours project only for the terrain. Then I have to build...    wait, you want me to build the entirety of middle earth?

/dies

Well I could, and do it justice, if I were to devote 5 years to it.  Moria would be the most fun, because I don't have any maps of it.  Just about the only LoTR thing I don't have maps of.

1491
Barad-dûr.  I should totally build it.  But it'd be like 1,000z-levels high, so I'd probably shorten it some for framerates sake.

Hey, I'm already building Barad-dur! :( I even have a post for updates, though no one is interested. Maybe that's because it's only planned for like 100 z-levels. But still, 100 is high enough for me, seeing as I've already committed 50+ play hours into this fort and I'm still DIGGING. I've dug 50 levels until now, have 140 levels more of stone to go, and then I have to build 50 levels of scaffolding so I can cast obsidian in it.

By the way, hello again, Vehudur. Us megaproject lovers should stick together, methinks. :)

Alright, then I won't do Barad-dûr.  I guess I have to think of something then still :(

But yes, hello.

Isn't this one of those things that's not supposed to happen?  I thought there were things in place to prevent it?

But it can really happen.

First thing I need to do is dam that river (can I even do that?) so it stops flowing into the hole and killing my FPS.

1493
Elves don't bother me by themselves.  Actually, I like elves, just not the elves in this game (because these elves are jerks). I'm probably the only person who doesn't kill elves for the heck of it.

Nasty beasts, however, considering my last map I managed to have two goblin sieges (I built the fort between two goblin fortresses, and they both besieged at the same time), a megabeast (in the caverns) and the circus at the same time...  and won.  And only lost two dwarfs doing it.

I have an idea though, based off that.   One word.

Barad-dûr.  I should totally build it.  But it'd be like 1,000z-levels high, so I'd probably shorten it some for framerates sake.

1494
digging/channaling away at everything on the map until there are only, walls at the map edges, ground stopping a river or lake from just falling, staircase, and the magma sea, then poor water onto the sea, and use the obsidian to build a 'hanging' fortress. then for the hell of it drown the circus.

I'll put that on my list, that's actually a nice idea.  But what to do with all the stone...   Oh god, think of the framerate.  Guess I'll have a lot of legendary masons.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Lake existance failure.
« on: October 03, 2010, 04:26:08 am »
I embarked on a tropical freshwater swamp map with a fairly deep 2-layer aquifer and a lake on the surface, but it seems that the top 6 Z-levels drained away as soon as I embarked.  Probably into the aquifer, considering the river is still flowing into it and vanishing into nothingness.  I wasn't aware this was possible.  It must be a bug.  Something this cool has to be a bug, right?

1496
I did that, walled it off, and then filled the hole with magma already though.  That is however, not a bad idea.  I was thinking something that's a real eye orgasm though, not something easy, heh...  draining an ocean/lake really hasn't seemed very hard, just takes a while.

To be entirely honest, this place couldn't be better.  The game is legendary, even in an incomplete state.  The community is great here.  (And the ability for a thread to start about X and derail to Y and then derail again to Z, then derail back to X and go to W and V and then randomly to C skipping everything in between...  well, you get the idea.)
the thing is, every forum does that. But the users (and mods) here take it in stride. They're less topic-differentiated threads than more natural threads of conversation that can flow.

yes, exactly.

Well, the question is simple enough.  Think of something that is absolute madness to build, and if I like it, I'll build it.  Actually, I'll probably pick the best of some 3 days worth of ideas.
