DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: October 12, 2010, 09:08:34 am »
Migrants have arrived, and i'm out of food (AGAIN!.)

While I make a feeble attempt to channel water inside so I can grow plants for the first time, I simply have everyone collect plants, in the hope that dwarves eat plants. It's something for the idlers to do I suppose.

Actually, I could slow my demise if I simply waited awhile then butchered some animals...
Oh, wait, there's a shrub in the way. I can't channel the water. I'm doomed...

I wish I could say something non-boring was happening, but I never last that long.

I'll just reclaim, reclaim, reclaim, until I get the whole 'not-starving' thing to work.

EDIT: First ever 'Mysterious construction'. "That's great Urist, but if it isn't edible, i'm going to feed you to the Carp".

EDIT2: Oh, whoopie, a lignite door. That's just great...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How would you describe your fortress?
« on: October 11, 2010, 04:54:06 pm »
A work in progress.

I've carved out around 20 (empty) rooms so far, along with a masons workshop and a carpenters one.

Plus, a downward/upward stairway to replicate the layout one floor down when I run out of space.Or as a tunnel to escape with.

Seems pretty uniform, as there's no-one of importance, all living quarters are the same size, barring the barracks located near the entrance,, adn the rooms I'm trying to designate as dining hall and Farm respectively (I doubt either will see work)

However, as I've no farm or weapons (plenty of materials and seeds though) it'd be better to describe it as...

A doomed work in progress.

Wall them off with some supplies, so your old dwarves don't get attatched to them (in case they die), until you figure out what to do with them.

Tomorrow, I can get on DF again, and attempt a farm. I don't think i'll succeed though. I know soil is required and all, but I can't tell if i'm making the plot on soil or not...

At least the dwarves have beds, and doors, so they can starve to death comferably in a sealed fortress.

You're shaping up to have a fort plagued by legendary horses. Tell me about any future engravings.

Kaguro, what do you mean like an Elf?
You could cut so many trees, that you could bathe in elf tears. Or, if you prefer, their blood.

Except dwarves don't bathe.

(My fort does fine, until migrants arrive, cutlery in hand, and eat my meagre food stocks. I really have to figure out this whole farming thing)

EDIT: I'm on a forum for a different game, and we were doing a 'King of the Hill' type thing.
This is what I posted:

Yeah, you're lucky you were steamproof. You'dve been supercooked.

I unleash MOLENAROK upon you, releasing my army of GIANT NAKED MOLE DOGS upon your position.

The GNMD 1 bites Tweakenings liver! It is bruised!
You strike at GNMD 2! You hit it in the lower-right leg, bruising the muscle!
GNMD 2 bites your upper-left leg! The severed part flies off in an arc!
A major artery has been opened!
You pass out due to exhaustion!
You have bled to death!

YOU ARE DECEASED!

My hill.

You get a cookie for the obvious reference.

Ok, this is attempt #4564 at trying to get a damn fort to work.
I've accidentally put beds in the doorways (I wish I could draw that image) and am now figuring out how to get rid of them. I'm going to make the damn idlers do something.
Worse yet is how i've carved everything out. It's great how everything is being held up by paper thin walls. Oh, and apparently I keep hitting damp stone, but i've no idea what that means so I kept digging.

I mean, I do alright, until migrants arrive and eat my meagre food stocks. Then I starve because my carpenter refused to make buckets for water to make mud...

Ahh, screw it, i'ma going to start in a haunted area, and see how many zombies they can beat down before being torn to pieces.

Well, they're underground. This is a dilemma of sorts.

They won't start digging their way to hell until they've dug out rooms. Because, y'know, if you're going to invite the leigons of hell, they need somewhere to stay.

Ruthless eh?
Sounds fun.

Umm, y'know farms need soil right? Do I need to water them at all? If so, are buckets used, or should I move the river (Which will have certain results, I excpect.)?

Fair enough.

I'm going to work on my fort after I watch this.

It's my 1st effort, and I'm diggin out LOADs of rooms, and a ramp to dig more rooms a floor down.

Then I'll make furniture for each of the rooms, and doors.

Oh, and farms...

I'm about to just dig downward forever with the embarking dwarves to see what happens.

Fine.

Lucky for you i'm not the kind to flood your room, or wall you away from society.

I'm the only one that's going to get slaughtered...

For fort mode, I'd have to say 'Steam Machine' by Daft Punk'.

Perhaps something more depressing would fit though.
