The greatest risk of seiging a dwarven fortress may also be victory itself due to the (forum at least) dwarves' typical disdain for the surface and/ or willingness to activate f-the-world or fortress-self-distruct devices if defeat is imminent. Defeating the dwarven defenses might result in the entire surrounding lands being apocolyptically lost to clowns, flooded in lava or contaminated by forgotten beast syndrome.

With the last hit 'cleaving asunder' the spider's cephalothorax which contains it's brain and other head-parts I would think that it should have died... perhaps in dying it's corpse fell down the stairs? I think it will be 'missing' in the units list until a dwarf sees the corpse but I'm a little out of touch with the new release so defiantly not sure.

How is your character's memory stat? I think it has an effect.

This seems the opposite of previously when you could drop dwarves from great heights onto pastures of cats and the dwarf would be un-injured while the cats took all of the damage.

I had what I thought was a near-'perfect' fort entrance;

From the map edge invaders faced;
F-the-world (shown)
Interior and exterior magma flush
Cave-in repeater
Bridges over 7z pit - magma fill optional
Collapsible floors over 7z pit - magma fill optional
Underground depot/ battle area
Double barracks

Everything inside was magma-floodable as far down as the barracks.

But, then there's the weird mutation abomination river-lake thing that it drains into.

That's two really close confluences of several rivers actually. Weirdly close.

I think this is something I've run into this when building up; Not all of the empty space per z-level is initialized when you build up into it and you can't place the burrow on tiles that don't exist in memory yet.
Can you build a stairs into the area, de-construct them and re-try placing the burrow?

All I needed was a pasture of cats to get my mason safely down 40z after he sealed up the top of my magma tank. The cedar logs hurt some of the cats but they were several-deep per square. Fallers get off scot-free if they land on a creature - who is not so lucky.

I use Legends Viewer to find and Paint to plot habited sites on an exported map. Then embark to each one (with initial save off) and use reveal to see what's actually there.

I'm a big fan of cave-in dust from various types of repeaters as nothing is immune to it. Knocks enemies off catwalks or against walls/ in the air. Animal watchtowers for intel.

If I remember right you cannot even with embark anywhere though you can embark on a larger map that contains an original smaller embark site but of course this seems to cause some terrain generaton bugs in the caverns - at least for me.

Just saw a demo of the new logic/ controller blocks: activation block, time delay block, AND gate block, NOT gate block, OR gate block and I think there was one or two others.

Oh the possibilities...
