DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Opps.... Danger Room Deaths

I usually just make a barracks of it, using a small nook for the armor stand and a door to block it off, set internal so as not to block the designation for the barracks. Then I make a separate, not-so-stabby barracks for legendary warriors.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Restarting the Temperature Cycle

And sudden ice is instant, irrevocable annihilation.

You can control when water is frozen or liquid by having magma running one Z level below the ice.

Being encased in ice is an instant kill for anything.

In freezing biomes liquid water will freeze all year round if it is above ground and not heated by magma below.

You can see where this is going...  :D
Fortress entrance hall filled with 4/7 water, exposed to the outside and magma under it? Drop the magma using a bridge below, and it freezes anyone coming through. Potentially reusable if you can get the magma back up, since the ice will melt, I believe.

...Damn, now I want to try this out. Curse my tropical embark.

Behold the Orcsicle Maker, by Vattic. I've been wanting to put this beauty together myself...

It's already disabled; the only labor my CMD has enabled is diagnosis (and carpentry). I've tried disabling it, and he stops, then I turn it back on when someone else gets hurt and he just goes at it again. Granted, everyone else gets diagnosed as well, but it's troublesome. The treatment screen says the patient "needs diagnosis" as well, so I don't think they'll get treatment even if I turn it off on him.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: My embark has a waterfall!

27 levels? Very nice; it's hard to find waterfalls higher than 10 sometimes.

There are a few things you can do; one approach I once did was create the entrance to my fortress behind the waterfall, and create a machine to "turn off" the waterfall, by redirecting it to either side of the bridge instead of straight onto it. It made a lovely defensive curtain that washed goblins away as they tried to rush into the fortress.

Not to my knowledge, no. If ghosts are considered a separate creature you make by able to make it blow up using Runesmith, but I doubt they are.

My chief medical dwarf has been repeatedly diagnosing the same two dwarves over and over for over a year now, one a child and the other one of my legendary engravers.  They both have at least 3 limb fractures, and the time they've spent in bed without actual treatment has resulted in infections in all wounds for them both. To give an example of how ridiculous this is, the child has been "evaluated" 47 times without any other treatment, the first 17 times being within the same month he was brought to the hospital; there are stretches of day-after-day evaluations throughout the list.

Is there any explanation to this madness? My CMD is a proficient diagnostician now; at least he's getting experience; he was a novice when I assigned him.

Why isn't the violent ghost fisherdwarf showing up in the carve memorial slab option!?

HELP!

Is this a reclaim? In my experience, the only creatures that show up on the "carve memorial slab" list are those that have died during that particular fort's lifetime, and then only your fortress citizens and named enemies (invaders/megabeasts/titans/FBs). Dwarves that died before a reclaim can be a problem.

An odd question from me: is there any program or online flash/java thing out there that will let me test-model a megaproject? I'm trying to design a dwarf head but I want to see it first before I try constructing it, however I can't find anything to make such a model.
EDIT: My Google-fu came through; for anyone else looking for such a thing, a 3d pixel editor such as Q-Block or Cubescape can help.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: First .. Giant .. a let down :(

Yup. In DF, numbers mean a lot; just because your single axedwarf is legendary in every fighting skill doesn't mean he'll have it easy against, say, five ogres. They'll have a hell of a time hitting him, but the dwarf will be stuck on the defense.

by Pneumatic tube I meant flushing it down a waterfall onto a grate. Might have the same problems as tossing it.
Hydraulic is the word you're looking for.

Hydropower, actually. Hydraulic would imply that the liquid in use is under pressure, while pneumatic is for pressurized air.

I may have to play with this water-push-tube idea myself. Sound like an excellent way to clear out areas of stone.

Unfortunately, attempting to dump the sand bags will result in the sand being dumped on the ground and the empty bag tossed in the hole.

The only way to make getting sand to your magma furnace easier, I believe, is to drop some tiles of sand down to the level of the furnaces, and even then it's a crapshoot.

Prepare yourself for a lovely little Forgotten Beast.

"Its tentacled body undulates rhythmically. Beware it's maddening gaze!"

I've had to create separate food stockpiles for individual butchered creatures just to avoid high-value meat rotting away. I recently killed a dragon (no time to build a cage trap to catch it; otherwise it would have been a treasure to keep), and my food stockpiles are almost always full, especially my meat/egg/fish stock.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Ideas Against Globins?
« on: May 03, 2011, 06:15:02 pm »
Well, globin in mind that globin types tend to globin their way through...

wait, that was a typo? not an M&L3 reference? never mind then.

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Trap_design#Goblin_Grinder

That's basically the only military application for pressure plates.

That's not the only use, just the most direct and simple. I've had pressure plates in large, overdone traps do most of the work.

This is what I think makes Dwarf Fortress so good. Even when things look their worst, an excellent story or event pops up and makes you want to save this little tale from its end.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Very Disappointing Siege

Sometimes it takes a little while for a fortress to completely crumble. I've had a fortress hit the end of a massive tantrum spiral leaving only one child alive, perfectly content, with four kills to her name. She sat in the booze stockpile hummimg happily.

I suppose I could have walled in and waited for immigrants to arrive, but I was impatient, so I abandoned. At least I know she didn't want for food or booze; there was over 4000 of each stockpiled.
