DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Worst thing you've done to your dwarfs?
« on: December 17, 2010, 10:11:21 am »
Before I learned to separate my food stockpiles from the booze, one of my first fortresses had an issue with booze; no barrels to make it with. I didn't realize this until dwarves were going berserk over it, so I figured assigning a captain of the guard would calm things down.

Turns out this guy would have made an excellent military captain instead, as he proceeded to punch half the fortress to death. As a result, the spiral worsened and I ended up flooding the fortress from the nearby river.

I don't just abandon.

I delete the entire world.

Usually because I get a new idea in my head just as I realize something suboptimal about the one I'm on (such as the last glacier I was on didn't have enough z-levels above ground to complete my dome, so I scrapped it and made a new one).

When assigning civilians to a burrow directly, you need to remember that the burrow does not specifically restrict movement to the burrow's confines. That's what military alerts are for. Civilian burrows restrict what buildings and jobs dwarves involve themselves with. As an example, a recent fortress of mine had two masons; however, the dome I was building was being constructed in such a way that if more than one mason worked on it, holes would be left in the wall. To prevent this, I assigned each mason to a burrow, one where the construction was taking place, and the other in the mason workshops where I had jobs that needed doing. Both burrows included their bedrooms and the dining hall and stockpiles.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Forgotten Beast Webs Valuable?

cage traps can catch it (I think).

I've heard a few people claim that FB can be caught in cage traps. They have [TRAPIMMUNE], but a cave in that stuns them negates this tag allowing them to be captured if they are stunned on top of a cage trap. I assumed Toady hardcoded FBs to be immune to traps even though this but apparently not. Presumably, clowns can be caught in the same way.

But as someone mentioned earlie, FB webs are currently glitched and are never produced.

I've seen it mentioned that FBs also have [NOSTUN]. I believe it was said the only reliable way to capture a FB is (ironically enough) using webs.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Cool Embark! (apologies for the pun)
« on: December 17, 2010, 09:18:27 am »
So I've just embarked on a new glacier in a new (and much colder) world. The embark is 3x5, with a volcano in the top center. As soon as I embark, I get the usual "cave-in" warning, but as I look around, I notice a couple of odd things.

First of all, there appears to be very straight paths "dug" about the mountains (which I will get to in a moment). like so:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Secondly, and more awesome to me, is the two spire-like mountains that flank it to either side, extending up 114 and 115z-levels respectively. They are almost perfect cones (though the left one has another peak off its back, it seems), with square bases, thanks to the aforementioned paths. The volcano cone appears to be made mostly of ice.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And finally, upon attempting to view this pile of awesome in Stonesense, I see some sort of lines below the ice, in what might be obsidian. Anything to this, or just something strange that Stonesense does with glacial ice? dfReveal shows nothing but typical stone layers, mostly igneous (big surprise). I think it might be some sort of "reflective" deal put in. The only modification I've made to Stonesense is the "Additional Ramps" pack on the wiki

Beware: these images are MASSIVE. (more than 6MB each) As such, I've linked directly to the hosting site instead of the image itself. To view the whole image, just click it at the site. The resolution of each image is 4608x5652.

Thoughts? Ideas? My first impression is to build a sacrificial altar to Armok between the two peaks, to throw prisoners into the volcano from a hanging pit at the level of the peaks.

EDIT: I also have the site saved, so far untouched but with the first embark team on site, if anyone wants. *shrug*

I am only disappointed that nowhere do I see that line
"Put 'em in the bed with the baron's daughter".

The cloud. The rest is perfectly wonder elf carnage and all, but that cloud of smoke and lava mist is perfect. I weep at your feet in awe and reverence, and give prayers and sacrifice to Armok in hopes of ever achieving similar.

Happy Dwarfmas indeed.  8)

There are 5 types of sand. Yellow, Black, White, Red, and just plain Sand. The color has absolutely no effect on glassmaking.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bucket brigade won't use salt water.
« on: December 17, 2010, 06:01:39 am »
yeah its sucky.  salt water can go in buckets, I know since a well over salt water results in salty water buckets.  You can also directly apply salt water for your mud.

the problem is with designating a water collection zone over salt water :(

even your aquifer is salty?  man that sucks, better get cracking on a lined reservoir and desal. pump :)

In my experience any region tile (that is, those in the middle panel during embark selection) within one square of the coast will have salt water, and that counts for every body of sourced water: ocean, river, aquifer and all. Usually if I'm farming I'll just go in for irrigation systems instead of trying to desalinate, but sometimes even that's not an option.

And if you want fun, try having your only source of water a frozen ocean on the edge of the map. Fun times.

I'd make them out of wood, and specifically these woods:

Goblin Cap
Nether Cap
Black Cap
Fungiwood
Tunnel Tube

A few rare golems to be made from Tower Cap.

10 points and a cookie to anyone noticing a theme here.

Well when I embark!
Well I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the dwarf who embarks with you.

And when I'm digging!
Well I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the dwarf whos digging next to you.

Well I would smooth 5,000 walls!
And I would smooth 5,000 more.
Just be be that dwarf who gets the right to detail the entire meeting room floor.

BOATMURDERED!

BOATMURDERED!

Bo ba bum ba da bum ba da bum ba da da da da!

Win City, right here. Took me til the third verse to get the tune in my head but it's perfect.

Now I want to parody something into DF. Hold on.

340: You lament the fact that you are unable to cage your cat, due to your significant other having been adopted by it.

341: As a result you have begun digging a hole in the back yard.

Is it sad that these were my waking thoughts this morning as my fiancee's 7-month old kitten woke me by attacking my feet?
"Dammit I want to cage the little beast. Wait, I can't, it's her pet. Maybe I could just put it in a hole out back, With the neighbor's storm door over the top..."

There is no exact date, though in my experience caravans more often show up later in the seasons than earlier. What is pretty much certain is elves show up in spring, humans in summer, and dwarves in autumn. No caravan arrives in winter.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Cage Traps and Flying Creatures
« on: December 16, 2010, 04:23:27 pm »
Basically the only way to get the bastard in a cage is make sure your cage traps have a ceiling immediately over them, and wait for the eagles to come visit your fortress. Flying creatures don't avoid traps as long as there isn't another z-level they can move to.
