After playing my "Second Wave" game, I made an unpleasant discovery. As it turns out Marathon mode increases research time... but not the amount of time before aliens spawn. I'm literally getting my first terror mission and I haven't even researched Arc Throwers yet!

General Discussion / Re: How Would One Reduce Inequality?
« on: October 16, 2012, 03:13:36 pm »
You'd have to take everyone's child away at birth and raise them in a commune, where the opportunities are all equal.  All new babies would need to be anonymized to prevent rich people from finding out who their children are.

This is basically the only answer. In order for a society to be completely equal, everyone must start out exactly the same way, with absolutely no interference by their genetic parents.

And not to forget that while this would systematically destroy any bias (Or at least Class-based.), it also has the potential to be horribly abused by Countries and Corporations.

The only time I really notice the UI errors is in maps with lots of elevation problems. The ship which I assume to be the alien carrier that you encounter around what I think is the middle of the game is the worst when it comes to this. It's just a nightmare to click anywhere in that ship.
The "shoot through walls" big may also just be a common visual big that I encounter a lot.

Also, I've actually downloaded a mod which enables the Second Wave options. I choose Marathon (Longer game), Not created Equally (Rookies have random stats), High Stakes (Random Rewards), and Absolutely Critical (Flanking shots always 100% Crit) on Classic. So far, it seems that aliens don't realize that the last module is on, as they always run into situations in which said Flanking shots can happen. Not that I'm complaining, of course. :P

Given Starbound's parent. It will be a very long game with a minimal skill factor.

I would highly disagree. I think Terraria's combat system gets pretty good as head farther into the game. I would know because I repeated got my ass handed to me by said game. :P

And even then, at least theres no way to be worse than Minecraft's combat system. :P

Interesting, structured random on a computer is a hard thing to accomplish in a reasonably controlled way.

Given that this is a game where you can just mine through the walls, I have a feeling this won't be a problem :P

I have successfully taken down the alien base at the cost of the 5 most highly ranked operatives in my team!

I did it at the cost of only ONE of my most highly ranked operatives in my team due to extremely poor foresight involving Mind Control! (And one Redshirt who became Cryssalid food, but no one gave a shit about him.)

And with that, I can add Sectoid Commanders to my list of aliens that I want to murder, right next to Cryssalids and Berserkers.

Are there laser machineguns then? Otherwise, I'll have to get rid of all the heavies.

Heavy Lasers, although I would get Precision Lasers first because it gives you both Laser Shotguns (Technically it's called the Scatter laser, but really, its just a shotgun.) and Laser Snipers. And from my experience Scatter Laser + Assault w/ Rapid Fire + Up Close and Personal perk + really short distance = Pretty much anything with less than two full bars of health dead.

Also good armor helps.

Terror mission. There was no chance.

Pro-tip: You want to rush Beam weapons before your first terror mission. Lasers can kill most Cryssalids in two hits. Or at least, thats what I experienced in Normal mode.

Confirmed. A villain who is more powerful then Lord English will appear. :P

Edit: Also TavrosXVriska de-confirmed. Turns out Tavros was most likely just making excuses for the shiny thing.

Agreed. I'd probably rather play a high-quality FATAL campaign than a horrible D&D campaign.
I admit that I know little about FATAL...

Honestly, if you knew anything about FATAL, you wouldn't be saying that. In fact, you would do anything in exchange for all copies to always stay at least 7 miles away from you.

I play classic mode because the missions are interesting and challenging, as opposed to normal mode, where I won every mission and lost a grand total of 2 soldiers.

Really? In my Normal Ironman playthrough, my drop like flies regardless and I got absolutely raped more than a couple of times.

Then again, it could just be because I'm a shitty commander overall :P

You should read up on a game called FATAL, IMO. It also had a ton of variables, but handled it very neatly.

I really, really hope you're joking when you say that.
