DF Adventure Mode Discussion / How do I leave the place I started in?
« on: July 07, 2014, 10:00:48 pm »
So, its been ages and ages since I played adventure mode, and a really long time since I've played DF without a texture pack, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to leave where I started. I spawned into some sort of fort, which I *think* is underground, and apparently human, because all the cabinets have large items in them. I've met only one person, A Macedwarf who immediately agreed to join up with me if I'd kill stuff with him. But the place doesnt appear to have any exits at all. There seem to be only two floors - one floor has tons of workshops, the other has lots of living space. But I think I've checked every door, and the stairs are only single stairs (that is, not Up/Down stairs, just one direction).

Am I missing some command I can use to leave or something?

Edit: Scratch that, found a human maceman hiding in the corner of a bedroom, so its not totally uninhabited aside for the guy in the room i spawned in.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Newbie Questions: Companions
« on: February 15, 2012, 05:46:55 pm »
1. Is there a technical term for people you get to join you? (So I can look in the wiki).
2. Can you mess with thier inventories? I know I can rename them, but dont know how to equip.
3. In thier status screen they are dehydrated. How do I get them to drink, or does it not matter?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Woke Up On Roof, Cant Get Down?
« on: February 15, 2012, 03:26:33 am »
So um, I asked a guy if I could sleep in his house, and then did so, and when I woke up I was on his roof, with no means of climbing down. Is there a suggested fix for this, or do I just just shrug and assume I've been abducted by aliens or something and start over?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Adventure Mode Newbie Questions.
« on: February 15, 2012, 12:56:16 am »
Ok, so I'll probably have quite a few eventually, but seeing as a part of the fun of DF is figuring things out, I'll start with only one question.

Namely, how/where do I find shopkeepers?

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't Find bins in depot menus
« on: June 23, 2011, 08:02:54 pm »
When I go to send stuff to the depot, like only a small fraction of my finished goods bins actually show up in the menus. Even when I search specifically, they dont show up, and I don't know why. Its a problem, because most of my exports are via glass goblets, and i cant get them to the depot.

Any ideas?

DF Gameplay Questions / How to turn off seiges?
« on: June 23, 2011, 10:29:47 am »
I think i read somewhere that the raws can be edited or something to disable seiges until your fortress is on its feet. I'm gonna need to do that, as im doing an aboveground fortress with aquifer only a few layers below, and have no experience tunneling through that.

Could someone tell me where in the raws the option is found? (Or if theres a wiki link or something, give me the link?)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Floodgate Help
« on: June 06, 2011, 08:26:03 pm »
Are glass floodgates non-magma-safe? The wiki says they're ok for floodgates (but that small glass stuff melts), but when I opened one to let magma through, it disappeared, and I cant close it again. Unless the mechanisms have to be magma-safe too or something? I know they work fine when closed - fortunately, I had two glass floodgates in place, and the other one was closed, so I didnt flood my fort, but Im wondering what I did wrong.

I used green glass floodgates with marble or rhyolite mechanisms.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My Volcano is emptying... on embark.
« on: June 05, 2011, 09:08:19 pm »
Sooo, uh. I chose an embark location with a volcano. And the first thing that happens is my fps goes all to hell, and then slowly starts rising. I was confused for a minute or two as to what happened, until I noticed my volcano was EMPTYING. Like, the bottom was cut out or something, draining the whole thing out from the bottom. I cant see where.

I'm curious what on earth could have caused this - I though volcanoes were solid all the way down to the bottom layer. Im strongly considering going ahead with this map and building INSIDE the shell of the volcano for kicks. Or will it randomly fill back up or something once its drained out?

I'm wondering if theres a way to select wide swathes of stone lying around and mark it all for dumping at once. A way that DOESNT involve using the z-stocks to dump all of a kind of stone. I just want to clear out a few large rooms, not the entire fort. Is there a quick way to do that without manually flagging each stone for dumping?

DF Gameplay Questions / Trading Screen Color-Coding
« on: October 20, 2010, 11:36:23 am »
What exactly do the different text colors mean in the trade screen?

I'm gathering brown is stuff that I've made, and I *think* that white is stuff that I didnt make. But what the heck is violet/pink/magenta? I've never seen that before.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarves Who Love Torture
« on: October 20, 2010, 10:47:06 am »
Ok, this was kind of horrifying, and also vaguely amusing, as is everything weird that dwarves do.

A ways back, I built a large jail. I tend to build all of my rooms large, just because I never know when I might need some extra space for something. I put in 3 chains and a pair of cages, and added in a square of food and a square of drink stockpiles within reach of each one, because I'd heard that you needed to do that sometimes. I've never actually built a jail before, so made both one of the cages and one of the chains a room. Apparently I missed flagging the chain as 'used for justice' - which resulted in this event.

So I went about my business as usual. My countess (curse her lazy hide) demanded the construction of a steel throne. Not having access to flux, I let it pass. So of course when the time came, she imprisoned one of the metalcrafters. After a fair bit of time had passed, just about the time I was thinking of checking on him, I got a message:

"Doc Whiskey has thrown a party at Chain" (Doc Whiskey being the combination High Master Diagnoser and High Master Brewer who showed up one day at my fort).

Fascinated, I watched as half my fort came piling into the jail to party in the dungeon. Then I noticed something else - the guy who had been jailed was Thirsty AND Hungry! The partying dwarves were eating his food! Not only that, but nobody cared to come bring him food or drink either, and he actually DIED of thirst with all these dwarves partying around him! And, to make it even more amusing, immediately after the party ended.

The logical conclusion to this of course is that everyone hated that Metalcrafter, and came to torture him by stealing his food and laughing at him as he slowly wasted away.

DF Gameplay Questions / Bridges and FBs
« on: October 14, 2010, 04:24:22 am »
Can FBs destroy raised bridges? I'm about to activate my megaproject - a complex labyrinth with 5 FBs plus traps to drop baddies into from above. I want to make sure my trapping method isnt gonna be hosed.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dealing With Useless Refuse (Cartilage, Tissue)
« on: October 14, 2010, 03:58:24 am »
Whats an easy way to get rid of all the useless stuff produced by butchering and rotting corpses? I've got HUGE refuse piles, and even though I've set the refuse orders to dump other items, they still shove all the cartilage, hair, and nervous tissue stuff in the refuse pile. Is there a good way to deal with this beyond manually telling them to dump each one into magma or something?

DF General Discussion / Need Pitfall Building Advice
« on: October 13, 2010, 09:28:20 pm »
I want to know how to build something that will drop a caged goblin on z level below.

I'm building a Labyrinth to lure several Forgotten Beasts into, and then I want to drop goblins in there and see what happens :D
But I don't know how to rig something that will quickly and safely transport and then drop a goblin into it from above.

DF General Discussion / Odd unhappy thought. What causes it?
« on: October 13, 2010, 08:31:04 pm »
I saw a strange thought on one of mu dwarves. His said "He saw something unpleasant in a cage recently"

Thats one I've never seen before, and I thought 'zoos' were harmless. What caused it?
