DF Modding / Individual Legendary Creatures of Myth
« on: November 14, 2007, 02:57:00 am »
I haven't had a chance to try this out yet (I am heading off to bed soon), but I figured I would put this up here now anyways:

The idea here is that your dwarves will be able to engrave images of individual hardcoded (mythical) creatures and have them described by name. I used creatures from Norse mythology in my example, but in theory you could do this with any mythic figures:

Put this in "creature_mythic.txt" in your '/raw/objects' folder:

code:

creature_mythic

[OBJECT:CREATURE]

[CREATURE:FENRIR]
[NAME:legendary beast, Fenrir, the monsterous wolf:monsterous wolves:monsterous wolf]
   [TILE:'W'][COLOR:0:0:1]
   [MODVALUE:50]
   [FANCIFUL]
   [PREFSTRING:mighty jaws]
   [ALL_ACTIVE]
   [MALE]

[CREATURE:JORMUNGANDR]
[NAME:legendary beast, Jormungandr, the world serpent:monsterous serpents:monsterous serpent]
   [TILE:'S'][COLOR:2:0:0]
   [MODVALUE:50]
   [FANCIFUL]
   [PREFSTRING:legendary length]
   [MALE]

[CREATURE:GULLINBURSTI]
[NAME:legendary beast, Gullinbursti, the golden boar:mythic golden boars:golden boar]
   [TILE:'B'][COLOR:6:0:1]
   [MODVALUE:50]
   [FANCIFUL]
   [PREFSTRING:fine craftsdwarfship]
[PREFSTRING:glowing mane and bristles of gold]
   [MALE]

[CREATURE:SLEIPNIR]
[NAME:legendary beast, Sleipnir, the steed of Odin:mythic steeds:mythic steed]
   [TILE:'H'][COLOR:4:0:0]
   [MODVALUE:50]
   [FANCIFUL]
   [PREFSTRING:eight legs]
   [MALE]

With any luck, you should get items decorated with images of "a legendary beast, Fenrir, the monsterous wolf in elf bone".

I haven't tested it yet, but the only thing that might make it not work would be the commas in the fanciful creatures' names; if names happen to not like commas you could remove them, although the engraving descriptions may not flow as well grammatically.

And why not reactions to turn rock nuts into quary bush leaves and fish bones into skeletal carp, while we're at it?

Get your adventurer's left hand chopped off, and you will always wield your sword with the right.

I take it that selling an artifact would probably get you all the gold the merchant has. I don't think you would want to sell an artifact, though, even if it was something useless for an adventurer like a cave spider silk floodgate. (There needs to be some good way to properly deposit collected artifacts; perhaps civilizations could have museums in their capitals, and adventurers could donate artifacts and masterpieces in exchange for recognition for their charity?)

Well, as long as the genocide is carried out against bipedal sentient beings. But you'd better believe that when one of old Ingish's fifty pet cats goes missing, you've got a disaster on your hands.

Given the fact that you pretty much never take a hit once you reach Legend for shield user, I think it would be very doable.

That said, I think using anything other than the largest two-handed weapons is against the spirit of this competition. I wiil have to try!

I know that picks use the mining skill. If you equip one in Adventure mode, can you gain skill in mining? (Not that mining is implemented for Adventure mode, of course.)

You should be able to drink swamp water, I think.

Anyways, at the moment refilling water skins isn't implemented. You either need to buy filled waterskins from shops, or else just move from one area to another whenever you are thirsty.

For all we know, that could be a gut-dwelling parasitic worm; do not cry for your companion in arms, for he will soon go where all heroic ringworms end up, in the intestinal tracts of Valhalla!

Can you play in DF mode long enough that your old character dies of old age, I wonder?

I would imagine that "trance-ability" is in the raw files. Just need to find the tag that is associated with it, and then use your prefered method of word searching large volumes of text.

(Still, I think he was more asking "What is the reason that only Dwarves can trance?" I would imagine that it is one of those uniquely Dwarven attributes, like how alcohol makes them productive, or how losing one item from a Dwarf's 173 masterpiece collection will send him into an murderous frenzy.)

If I could find where skeletons are in the raw files, I would so make them playable. They lose limbs amazingly fast. (Where are they, by the way? I have a strange desire to play Zombie Dwarf Fortress...)

I love the way Toady asks these questions, as if he doesn't know the answer. (Although, the game is so massive that forgetting game mechanics would be understandable...)

Clearly what we are expected to do is put barrels of dwarven booze in our waterskins, then! (Apparently polar bear leather is more elastic than the stuff they make speedos out of!)

Sadly, you can't at the moment. Either drink from swamps and rivers, or leave to a different area every time you get thirsty. (In addition to healing most wounds, it feeds and waters your character.)
