Mission Status

Don't give up... and never surrender, for just when you think the stress of waiting for Dwarf Fortress to be released is too great, remember that the minute you walk away you will have missed the very moment that your dreams had come true.  Waiting just around the corner is a game that will jump out and scare you with its opulence.  Easily it approaches a state where even YOU can easily access modes and features long forgotten in the cryptic and byzantine sub-menus that could only be reasonable in the outsider art we had been creating.  It is time to face the brilliant horizon, and stare into the sun!

Fun with Numbers

Thanks to everybody that helped out in February!  Statues turned out well, I think, ha ha ha.  My workflow is always moving between menus and art as new tiles are produced.  I'll be back to special building menus for a bit now, and then we should have some more art to show.  Another month, a few more steps in the long process.

Mission Status

Rounding third.  The goal line coming near in a tortured American sports mixed metaphor.  It means that the end is drawing near.  I have seen it, a land promised to the multitudes whose unfettered giving has projected the project onto a wide screen that can be seen by the whole world.  You know it.  Every mouse click is a new moment of creation.  There are no hiding places left in the Garden of Everything where generosity begets new and grandiose success.

Fun with Numbers

Thanks for a great start to 2021!  After the interim release, we can now go back to work on the interface, moving through the dwarfy character sheets to other clickable objects like buildings and items.  This should see us scoop up the existing abilities to add jobs to workshops and look at items inside of them, as well as other stuff like workshop profiles, and put it all into a single easier-to-use sheet.

DF Announcements / Dwarf Fortress 0.47.05 Released
« on: January 28, 2021, 06:34:51 pm »
Download (Click refresh on your browser if it doesn't show up)

Here's an interim release - this is a fixer-upper for the old version, and not related at all to the new graphical stuff.  This isn't meant to address everything of course, or even most things, and we'll be cleaning up a lot more bugs and issues for the Premium release itself.  This one gets rid of some long-standing crashes and also attempts to address most of what we learned from the stress discussion from the forum.  There are still a few unmet needs (which don't contribute much to stress, but are an eyesore), and a few outstanding ideas related to winning sieges, ending wars and unattended children, but we'll need larger changes there that are better integrated with the Premium work.

It's always a little weird splitting the bug fixes into the two major/minor categories, but especially here, where the stress changes add up to a lot, so the division below is particularly arbitrary on that score.

Major bug fixes
(*) Fixed w.g. crash related to dark fortress civs having fixed positions not held by demons
   (*) Fixed zero-size creature crash
   (*) Fixed off-site werebirth crash
(*) Stopped visitors from siding against fort in any conflict where the fort's tame megabeasts are involved
(*) Made cave adaption negative effects less frequent
(*) Made people get used to seeing dead bodies
(*) Stopped corpse raising, shapeshifting and non-living non-vampire visitors
(*) Made basic friendships easier to form for slow-to-love people

Other bug fixes/tweaks
(*) Made people that work outside a lot get used to bad weather
(*) Made valuable food satisfy good meal thought in addition to preferences
(*) Added some additional dwarf chat types to meet some other needs and reduce stress
(*) Stopped many minor thoughts from forming memories
(*) Removed stress from migrants (e.g. ones from old forts)
(*) Vengefulness is no longer stressful (as it was mainly related to defending others from attacking animals)
(*) Changed balance of migrant professions
(*) Patched one form of military item corruption on load (root cause not identified)
(*) Expulsion exception 'child not present' now only applies to minor children
   (*) Fixed MUNDANE and HAS_ANY_CAN_SWIM for interactions/transformations

Mission Status

It is the beginning of a year of new beginnings.  Like the stirrings of life in a pupa or free-living cyst, Dwarf Fortress is taking shape, preparing to emerge into a new stage of life.  It is all because of your garden of generosity which feeds Bay 12 Games's greatest offspring in its larval form.  But Dwarf Fortress is no mere insect.  It is an achievement born of near 20 years of painstaking, often tedious work fueled by the love shown by a group of human beings that stand out from the rest.  You could have just taken it for free, but you chose a higher path, taking our hand and lifting Dwarf Fortress to the highest tree branch to weave a cocoon of giving to await its great arrival onto a wider world.

Fun with Numbers

I only realized some part of the way through 2020 that I totally forgot to do the yearly summary for the January 2020 report.  So I've added everything up here again and included both the 2019 and 2020 totals.  And they're amazing!  This is all before fees and taxes of course, and split between my brother and I, and etc., but it's really good.  Thanks to everybody that helped out!  Our plan for the year is to continue focusing on getting the graphical version of Dwarf Fortress together, and just pick up where we left off in December.  This means finishing up the newly merged look-building-view dwarf-building item modes from the old text version.

Slow and steady wins the race.  Watch as one by one the overly complex and onerous keyboard commands fall by the wayside. I have experienced the power, and I know you will feel the righteousness and positive energy of intuitive clicks and easy to read visual cues.

But remember!  We must first reach the finish line.  You are the reason we have made it this far.  With your continuing help, we can create something of a magnitude none could dream of.

Fun with Numbers

Thanks to everybody that helped out last month!  General consensus seems to be that it is good that 2020 is drawing to a close.  Hopefully next year can be workerly somehow, as we try to get this big release together.  This month we should see at least one additional humanoid (the human one!) and some more work on the interface as we pull the v-t-k-q options together.

Mission Status

Colossal is the gravity pulling all conceivable factors into place, that they circle the center, the glowing orb of success and "playability"that is the foundation of things to come.

For instance, with the mouse it is now possible to stock your piles.  With only a few flicks of the mouse, it is now possible to organize your goods and equipment which before would have taken a confusing trip through a maze of tangled menus.  The next target will be placing buildings, and displaying varied furniture types and traps.

Lo!  I have tested what we have now, and it is good.  I dug out the ubiquitous nest of dwarven bedrooms in less time that it would take designate a single meeting room in the classic version.  I also managed to flood the whole thing with an aquifer!  It looked awesome and is only being improved over time.  Solid greatness awaits.

"Congratulations to the generous!" -- ThreeToe

Fun with Numbers

Thanks for another great month!  I'm not sure we've ever seen the last five months all up in the five figure range.  That's all pre-expense, pre-tax, of course, but even after Zach and I split it, it's certainly enough to keep us going!  We're fortunate and grateful that people are supporting us as we've changed gears to working on the graphical version.

There aren't any virtual events scheduled this November, so it'll be a workerly month all the way through, 2020 willing.

Mission Status

Strong is the root of a tree not felled by the buffeting winds.  With the foundation of your support, month after month, we can survive this chaos and arrive on the other side with the trophy everyone has been waiting so patiently for. Believe me, no one wants this process to be done more that we do.  Imagine the UI on the other side of the rainbow.  Then imagine many rainbows after that, all in better position to be hunted until they give up the treasure and bring the future into the present.

Fun with Numbers

Wow, a string of excellent months numbers-wise there.  Thanks for helping out!  We'll try to get the game together as quickly as I can, but of course September was not incredibly friendly here with the wildfire smoke and also insulation-installers drilling the side of the wall near my bed and so forth.  Not a lot of sleep in September.  But October will be different somehow!

First project this month is: dwarves!  I should be able to show some of them beyond the one placeholder dwarf we'd been using soon.  Then I need to finish up the stockpiles, and get back to all of the other matter.

Should be at the Roguelike Celebration this weekend, in virtual form.  It is a MUD of some kind, I think, and I have no idea how that'll be since I missed the demo, but perhaps I'll see some of you there!

Any comments about the format, content, quality, etc. of the call are welcome.  DF Talk questions are welcome - we had a special guest this time, but questions have been coming in and we'll be sure to answer them in our next regular-format episode.  We used Zencastr this time as well, so there'll be a whole new audio adventure in terms of oddities and things.  Hopefully the voices are somewhat improved - we each had separate audio tracks this time, which should help in the long run.

Mission Status

Those of you that have had the audacity to pay attention to the metamorphosis that is Dwarf Fortress have seen and smelled the changes in the air.  The main play screen has been entirely redesigned for graphics and mouse support.  Not only will the controls be easier to understand, they will be more powerful and swift to strike.  Having completed the animal sprites, we have moved on to the larger vegetation.  Tall cactus as well as giant underground mushrooms have their own growth patterns and visual representation.

Here you will find no sign of weakness, no intention to rest or even slow down.  You are witness to a juggernaut unheard of in recent history.  The final result will be worth all the work that has been ceaselessly poured into the vessel headed straight for you.

Fun with Numbers

Thanks to everyone that helped out in August!  We're continuing on with the interface and the graphics, as usual.  This month, more main screen and various pictures.  I have seen the new DF saguaro now and it was very wholesome.

There's also going to be an hour-long online DF Meetup at PAX Online, currently schedule for Saturday Sept 12th at 1:15pm-2:15pm.  This is free to attend.  There should be more information as we come up to it.  I'll also be on a procedural generation panel at some point during the nine day event.
