DF General Discussion / Dwarf Fortress Talk #25 Feedback
« on: August 11, 2020, 02:05:05 am »
The twenty-fifth one has been posted.
Any comments about the format, content, quality, etc. of the call are welcome. DF Talk questions are welcome - we answered all we had this time! There are some landscaping noises (mainly from ~0:09 to ~0:15), and some microphone crackle especially near the end which I couldn't edit out. But the new headphones eliminated the beeping and I didn't have to manually adjust my own levels upward, so it felt like forward progress.
The transcript for #24 is underway (thanks JCsuper!). Of course, now we are stacking them up again, but hopefully a transcript can also be formed eventually for this episode.

Are you an animal? If so if you are in Dwarf Fortress you are done! With all the beastly sprites completed, the first UI screens, long teased, will be distributed to the internet. Odds are, the internet will break. You are the reason for this magnitude. Imagine a DF without the need to memorize confusing key combinations and atavistic menu screens. Dwarf Fortress and its intricacies can finally be judged on their own merits, no longer seen only through the prism of terrible interfaces.
You have carried our standard this far, through pain and strife. Just a little longer and everything will find its resting place in the Vault of Heaven.

Thanks to everybody that helped out in July! We'll be able to release our first look at where the interface is currently headed this month, and we're continuing to work through the main screen update. Though there are 60+ screens (with various subscreens and modes), the main screen is by far the most involved, of course, and there will be many stages to the process. With designations (mostly) done, we're currently looking at updating building construction and reports/announcements, but the focus could change as our interface artwork comes together, so we'll leave the particulars for the dev log as usual.
July: $10578.03
June: $10560.49
May: $9921.44
April: $12380.70
March: $10052.21

Any comments about the format, content, quality, etc. of the call are welcome. With Quatch's help, I think I managed to improve the audio quality a bit. My headset still had my volume way lower, and I tried to fix that manually, which is perhaps iffy. New headphones in the mail! DF Talk questions are welcome! We received one kind comment in our questions inbox (thanks Rick!) since last time, but no questions, so we didn't do a Q&A in this episode.
Um, apologies to people still working on the transcript for #23, but with Rainseeker back, we figured we'd get another one recorded, he he. So I wouldn't expect a transcript to come together super fast on this one, especially with the myth terminology making it slightly more irritating. Hopefully it can still be done though.
edit: JCsuper has started a transcript for this episode, post here
Transcript is up on episode page now. Thanks JCsuper and voliol!

The Bay 12 Games Report, July 1st, 2020
Mission Status
Forward progress and the future amid the panic and confusion outside. We will be here, hard at work while feasible, to make the ultimate gaming spectacle ever attempted. Soon, my friends, there will be a product on the market that exists solely due to your generosity, and while not free, will be worth every universal credit that the various platforms accept.
Have you ever wondered how, or why you ever learned to type in Dwarf Fortress commands as if it were 1983? Soon that will all be behind you. You can join us in the 20s! Not the best start to a decade, I'll admit, but we can make it better. Just hang on and the future will be Dwarfy AF

The work is ongoing. Many animals are in progress. I've been tinkering with clickable buttons and little animals in small boxes next to options with animals.
The website has been in flux all month, with various hosting/registrar issues - hopefully these are being resolved now. One more nameserver update and theoretically everything will be fine! (If the site is working for you now, it's still the old version.)
June: $10560.49
May: $9921.44
April: $12380.70
March: $10052.21
February: $15187.93

Any comments about the format, content, quality, etc. of the call are welcome. The levels on this one are pretty terrible, since we were dealing with multiple headset issues and just barely managed to get it recorded at all. Hopefully that'll be improved for next time. DF Talk questions are welcome!
We don't currently have arrangements for a transcript, so that'll need to be worked out in some way over the course of the thread, as with the previous episode. voliol and Quatch have volunteered to do a transcript. Currently in progress. Some WIP links at these posts: here (first ~30 min), here (last ~20 min).
Transcript available here, thanks to voliol and Quatch!

Thanks to everybody that helped out in May! We'll continue posting art updates as we implement them. We've been doing various forms of water (brooks, pools, rivers, etc.), lots of items, and more, and though I continue to be somewhat behind the artists, ha ha, we should have some more good pictures to share this time around as we go.

Despite all the suffering, you, we, and all are moving forward toward a degree of excellence the world will remember. It is not only the present efforts to bring a wider audience with a kinder UI and representation. It is the promise of the future. There will be a future for all of us. You have seen this, and your contributions make this possible.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, and light is both a wave and a particle. Dwarf Fortress will soon use the medium of light as such that has existed since 1987. Now visualize and comprehend.
For those that can find their way in the backward darkness, help is on the way for you too. You may be able to read ASCII and masterfully work your way through a maze of dehumanizing menus, but taste the future! There are changes coming that will reframe the reality of your lives.

Thanks for supporting us as we proceed through the graphical work! The plan this month is much like March. Stay inside, stay safe, work on graphics, post screenshots. I'm not much of an art director, as far as professional qualifications go, but we've been in constant communication with the artists, and it's all going smoothly so far! Community feedback has been very useful as well. The artists have done an amazing job, and we already have a few treats in the works for April.

Like a caterpillar becomes a pretty flying insect, so a person must change in the eternal circle of life. In this way, dwarf fortress is like you, crawling on leaf and branch until it sleeps in its cocoon. There the work will be done, alone, changing and growing, bringing beauty to its final form.
Your generosity is the energy that fuels this metamorphosis. I have seen the events of the future, manifested in the present. It comes in the form of the selfless support that you have brought to this magical mission to bring you a game beyond all quality.

Wow, thanks for a great month! The new version is still a little rough, but we need to start the graphics code now. We'll loop back around to do another pass on bugs once the artists can see their work in action. This month is also a bit odd because GDC was cancelled, but a lot of tangential events are going on, and I don't currently know what I'm doing or where various co-persons stand on various matters and such. So there might still be a slow patch in the middle of the month development-wise. But despite the bumpy start, the new era begins now, and it should be pretty cool.

DF Announcements / Dwarf Fortress 0.47.04 Released
« on: March 01, 2020, 12:14:42 am »
Download (Click refresh on your browser if it doesn't show up)
Our second leap day release! Fixes old and new this time. From the new category, aside from crashes, marriages were being dissolved frequently and friendly visiting experiments were breaking too much furniture. Among the older bugs fixed, we've got the one where people could teleport through walls while fighting or sparring, a loyalty cascade civil war issue, and a creature/item duplication bugs that was corrupting saves.
Barring sudden issues, this will be the final bug-fix release before we get the code work started on the graphical version. There's a lot left to fix before that version is ready to be released, and we'll be doing parallel bug fix releases as the graphics stuff progresses.
Major bug fixes
(*) Fixed w.g. crash related to society infiltration
(*) Fixed w.g. crash related to variable position creation
(*) Fixed crash involving misbehaving roads
(*) Fixed loyalty cascade due to death of questers etc. that had positive relationships with fort dwarves
(*) Stopped charge collisions from teleporting people through walls
(*) Fixed save corruption/duplication related to fort/adv retirement
(*) Stopped dwarves from silently dissolving their marriages when they make a close friend
(*) Stopped large visitors and residents from seeking and destroying buildings even if they do so as invaders
(*) Stopped overwide shrines in npc forts from flooding the underground
(*) Fixed issue causing broken castle maps
Other bug fixes/tweaks
(*) Stopped pantheons of mortal races from frequently having very high numbers of deities
(*) Fixed summon effects for small-sized creatures
(*) Removed building destroyer/trample/trapavoid from smaller procedural creatures
(*) Made divorce thought appear properly
(*) Added stone altar building job
(*) Fixed broken reunion historical entry
(*) Removed various forgotten beast traits from experiments
(*) Corrected issue with rumor system
(*) Made item creation interactions work harder to select a material if none is provided
