Can you lock the door?

For some reason, yes. I've also walled in the entrance just to be safe.

Bogeymen are only in adventure mode, as only adventure mode has a day/night cycle.
Remember that night creatures will tear your dorfs up, so try to avoid til you have some decent troups.
Also, if you play adventure mode you can find the lairs of more exciting creatures, like hydras and dragons, and embark
there for more fun...

Thanks for the heads up. And THERE'S a good idea!

Guess you haven't played Adventure Mode much...

Afraid not. I've never quite got the hang of it.

Regardless, I never thought something like that would actually appear on my map! Am I going to get attacked by Boogeymen next?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So apparently I have a monster on my mountain
« on: November 23, 2010, 04:29:38 pm »
I'm starting a new fortress, pretty standard affair. The dwarfs decide to stop the wagon on the very peak of the mountain, but that's fine. I decide to just check the Unit List, and I see this!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

'Man of The Night?' I thought. 'What on earth is THAT!' So I zoomed to his location, and he appears to have a lair of sorts.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1: Rakust, Man of The Night

2: A cedar table, a nickle silver cauldron, some periclase mortar and some ant remains. Most of it is ichor covered

3: A cedar door

To finish off I decided to see his unit description. This one speaks for itself!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Not only have I never seen or heard of one of these before, but his lair isn't that far from where I decided to carve my entrance. Which could possibly lead to lots of Fun. Regardless, I thought I should show you guys. This is... new. And a little bit frightening.

Not sure what that will do, was never good at editing the game :P I may have a version 31.02 or 03 tileset around.

* kaolbrec claws face in despair.

Do you want me to post a series of pictures outlining the necessary steps? Because I'll do it. I'm crazy man!

I wouldn't mind that, since you're offering it around.

Would I be correct in assuming that they look a bit like DnD's Thri'keen?

Wait, it's just a bug?

Dammit, I abandoned my Volcano Fortress! I thought 'Welp, this fortress is so big my computer can't handle it. Time to start over'!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can I catch fish / aquatic creatures in cages?
« on: November 22, 2010, 04:15:55 am »
You go to the Fishery and select the option of catch live fish.

Well now I just feel stupid. Thank you!

Do they prioritise the zone you've assigned to fishing above all others?

I'd like to start an aquarium you see. Maybe with some Giant Olms and Giant Toads thrown in for good measure. I've got clear glass terrariums ready (since I heard that fish in normal cages will suffocate)

But the thing is, how do I catch them? Do I drain a chamber, put cage traps in there then fill it with water? Then drain it again to claim what I've caught?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Why are animals so attracted to Danger Rooms?
« on: November 21, 2010, 04:43:16 pm »
This has been severely annoying me all day now.

WHY ARE CATS AND DOGS SO ATTRACTED TO MY DANGER ROOM!?

Seriously, what can they possible be thinking? "Ooh, a room full of huge moving spikes! I know, I'll go in there!"

And I can't even make the doors non pet-passable, since they just wait until a dwarf is passing through and then make their move. I've got a TRIPLE DOOR system to keep them out, and they STILL manage to get through! And the absolute worst thing is I can't just leave them to die, since that will cause a tantrum and will bring my fort to ruin.

So... why? Why must they ruin my Danger Room?

Don't Sacrifice Migrants to Armok. Simple :)

But that's stupid.

Imagine if, for the sake of example, it was suddenly changed so every time you slaughtered an animal that dwarf caught rabies and died. Then when people complain about it, someone goes "Don't slaughter animals, simple!" That's you. You're that guy.

You elf.

Because I wanted to start my fort slow and not get too large until I was ready, I used d_init.txt to alter my population cap to 50 dwarfs. But more migants keep arriving!

What am I doing wrong? Why do they keep appearing!?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: November 21, 2010, 09:08:53 am »
My new fort is next to a volcano. This means I had to deviate from the standard fort plan I use. I went into super-planning mode and made something far better as a result. Even though one of my best miners and expedition leader died in the process of tapping into the magma. But I got him a tomb with gold grave, door and statue. So all's well.

I altered d_init to only allow 50 dwarves (because I wanted to start small, then build my way up gradually) but I still get immigrants past that number! What gives!

I've actually been thinking about how you could live underground.

But then I read World War Z (particularly the part about North Korea) and I decided against it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Weapons!
« on: November 19, 2010, 06:20:27 pm »
A weapon question I've been thinking about recently: What weapons would actually be good for fighting in tunnels / caves / other underground areas?

I imagine spears would, especially in chokepoints.

No difference I'm afraid - considerations like how much room you need or how well they work at keeping opponents at bay aren't simulated (yet?). Would be interesting if techniques changed depending on terrain/space available. [/quote

I meant in real life. What melee weapons would be best in tunnels, caves etc in real life?

This sort of thing I like to know, because I run my fort less on numbers and more on rule of cool.

255
This: Dwarf picks up spears - goes to training - immediately goes away to pick up the sword and shield - repeat
I've experienced this, when I thought breastplates can be worn over mail shirts.

Oh, so spears can't be used with shields then?

And I thought breastplates did go over mail shirts? It says that they can both go in the slot on the wiki.
