DF Gameplay Questions / What happens if I give Military Dwarfs two weapons?

Like, a spear and a short sword?

What happens if I give them two weapons, and a shield?

A weapon question I've been thinking about recently: What weapons would actually be good for fighting in tunnels / caves / other underground areas?

I imagine spears would, especially in chokepoints.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: disposing caged goblins
« on: November 19, 2010, 04:24:59 am »
I don't know about you guys, but I ALWAYS release a few Goblin prisoners for every ten or so that I kill.

Why? To tell the world that my fortress is not to be messed with. "Tell the other Goblins what you just saw!"

You could remove some season tags from the entity_default raw for the Gobs. For example limit their attacks to winter time with deleting [ACTIVE_SEASON:SPRING], [ACTIVE_SEASON:SUMMER] and [ACTIVE_SEASON:AUTUMN] out of their entity entry. This should lessen the frequency of gob terrorism and it's less likely that they mess with caravans then.

I'll do that, thank you.

Where do I find these tags?

The amount of attacks is a bit too high for my enjoyment, and I wish to change that.

No matter where I embark, even on an island that has no goblin homes on it, I always get dozens and dozens of goblin attacks every year. Usually four or five at a time, and at least two of those are lashers. I try to get cage traps and a working military, but all my good soldiers keep getting killed by constant attacks so I have to keep bringing in new ones (meaning my military always sucks) and I never have enough time to get rid of prisoners before the next attack comes.

I understand that Losing is Fun, but this isn't losing. Losing something implies there's a chance of you winning, or at least surviving. This is just me being kicked in the balls over and over. Not fun at all.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do you imagine your dwarfs?
« on: November 10, 2010, 05:28:52 am »
Simple question: Since DF relies heavily on your imagination, how do you imagine your dwarfs?

My first military squad in my current fortress of BasicLabor was given the name 'The Gears of Law'. I then promptly gave them maces and shields, and now I imagine them as dwarven riot police. I like to think their helms even have two big gems in the front over the eyes, to simulate gas masks.

Dear Urist McMayor.

What do you mean, export of toys prohibited? Toys are ALL we export!

Fine, whatever. You obviously know best. To show our appreciation, we've left a little surprise in your room. Hope you enjoy it!

Imagine, right, it's JUST like a Goblin Repeater, but there's a small way down the middle for dwarfs, which you can manually close with floodgates when the time comes.

Enemies go down one way, getting hurt by weapon traps all the while. They then reach pressure plates, which close their end to the fort but open the other end. So they go that way, into more weapon traps. And THAT way closes as they get close, and so on and so forth.

Well now I have discovered a relatively successful method of inducing miscarriage. All dwarves joining the military will be subjected to this.

Do not titillate and leave us in the dark! How?
I'm actually not sure how it was working, but one of the danger rooms was for whatever reason causing miscarriage to appear on the married dwarfs. The wiki says something about repeated injury to the lower body half.

Oh dear lord. The mental images I'm getting.

SOMEONE, GET ME MY BRAIN BLEACH!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What tileset do you recomend?
« on: October 18, 2010, 05:56:55 am »
I prefer Vanilla. Because I find that when I'm using a tileset, my dwarfs stop looking how I imagine them in my mind, and instead start looking like what the tileset shows.

Does that make any sense? I'm not sure it does.

ANSII? The only ANSI graphics I know are pictures made of letters.

And I have graphics for many stuff including races, but didn't finish some critters so it's not released yet.

Normal DF graphics I mean. ASCII / ANSII. It's technically both, but whatever.

And so the symbols in the current version aren't going to be the ones in the final then? Cool!

Edit: Oh, also. Will the name generator be fiddled with? To produce names a little less dwarfish?

268
Hey. Like the mod. I was naive and thought those nice pixellated people on the first page would be in it, but that was just stupid me.

Anyway, would it be possible to have an ANSII version of this, instead of a tileset?

DF Suggestions / Perhaps add golems? Maybe when magic comes around?
« on: October 16, 2010, 03:42:59 pm »
I have no idea about coding so I don't know if this idea is even possible or not, but I thought I'd say it anyway.

I think that Golems are a very dwarven thing. For extremely advanced dwarfs they could practically be robots, while with the more magically inclined they can just be the good old fashioned animated stone kind. Either way, I think they could be included.

Maybe you need a certain noble to build them, who you cannot train yourself, similar to a Dungeon Master. They should be relatively hard to craft, needing a mix of stone, metal and gems. Once built they can either haul stuff, do basic things like pump operating or even fight for you. However they shouldn't be that controllable. Like dogs.

Perhaps even make them run on alcohol. You'll need a lot of it stocked to keep them running, and if they get too thirsty they die.

I actually felt really guilty with my first killing room.

I'd compiled quite an extensive killing list, of all migrants I didn't like. The first to go into the hall of spikes was an old woman, one of the first migrants. She was a grandmother, and had been ecstatic lately. When the spikes started stabbing she crawled to the (locked) door and died there. I couldn't help but imagine she crawled up to it and desperately tried to claw her way out before dying.

Now I try not to use a kill list. I try to ALWAYS find a use for my Dorfs, even if it's just the military.
