DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Stacks of pumps - pumpstack?
« on: February 07, 2011, 03:39:16 pm »
I suppose I could make some beds down there as well.

All they really need to keep them speedy - is drink. If there is water near the bottom, setup a well.  If not - just make a little room, add a 2x2 food store restricted to just drinks - then set it up to pull from your main food/drink storepile.

If I have had setup coffins to bury them in, I've never had a ghost stick around for any time at all.
I have had where early on, the stone mason died (damn skeletal crocs!), turn into a ghost - and by the time I finally got a stone coffin built for him and installed - that wasn't enough to satisfy him (had to make a slab).

But any other time - if I already have coffins available - I don't get any ghosts (certainly not angry ones), even with a variety of sad/unbury-able deaths occuring every year.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How Did You Learn How To Play
« on: January 07, 2011, 12:28:19 pm »
Three cheers for CAPTAINDUCK and his great tutorials.  I had always wanted to play DF - but honestly I was concerned that it would take way too much time to learn it before I could start enjoying it.  But I started listening to Captainducks youtube videos during compiles - not only did I learn the basics, but also the general way of just how to interact with the interface and the sim.  Also he has a great voice that is fun to listen to.  You hear him and think "Well -he doesn't sound crazy and yet enjoys DF - I bet I could too".

After a handful of those, I started gen'in worlds, embarking, and havking FUN over and over.  After that the WIKI became (and still is) very key.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Peculiar Invader Behaviour
« on: December 10, 2010, 12:14:20 pm »
I've seen the same behavior in .18 where they do more milling about outside.  I thought it was maybe them seeing the first of their friends die on the long hallway of steel spinning disc traps and deciding maybe to not go in.  But then the next invasion they all charged in together - and 2 of them made it past all the traps (well, past those traps the next hallway full got em )

I generally use lead coffins.  Gotta make something with all that metal and this way it doesn't turn into bin or a barrel that weighs 10,000 pounds.  Plus if a dwarf ever dies of radiation - the lead coffin will protect the fortress!

I have begun drafting my useless/unwanted migrants into the Meat Shield Brigade. They are armed with only a shield and are sent out first before my actual military engages.

Thats a great idea! Maybe give them a shield and a mace - if they live, then they can move over to an equiped squad.
That is a lot better than the 50+ of them just standing around the grand dining room drinkin free booze.

It is standard practice in a later game fort - but every once in a while, I get a twinge of guilt as a respond to "Urist McDoggy has had puppies!" with Z-A, find the newborn pups, and mark each one for slaughter.  :|

Later on I notice that the backpacks the military carry their food around in are made of dog hide, inside is dog roast, and when they get wounded they are cleaning themselves with cat soap.

Thanks so much Necro!  Will do once .18 gets out - my entire front gate is covered in disk traps so its getting hit hard by the crash bug.

thanks again!

Anyone know how to get rid of ghosts? I lost a miner to a magma dig (MUST POWER THE FURNACES!) early on so his body...um.. "Could not be recovered".  So he got the normal coffin but nothing inside.  He is a ghost, he knocks over shit every once in a while.  I got lucky and my second artifact was a coffin! Woots - so I made a nice 3x3 tomb area, put in the artifact coffin, and assigned it to him.   It still says "Urist McAngry Ghostly Miner" - I was hoping it at some point (now that he has a pimpin' tomb) his ghost would leave.

What's the secret?

I make 10 stone crafts, then encrust them with gems.   This makes it so there is only one bin to push up to the top - and yet is generally around 10k+ of dwarf bucks to buy stuff with.

It also solves the issue that I just CANT get myself to ignore the gems, I must collect them, store them, and cut them - but before they just stayed there stored up forever.  Now I can at least make some trade off them.  I used to used them to encrust doors, thrones, etc - but it is was just too much micro to get it work well.
