DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / A disturbing trend
« on: April 09, 2012, 05:33:59 pm »
Babies. We're entering year three of our fort (We are using the royal plural, today, for some reason), and we have well over two dozen babies. Did The Toady One increase dwarves' reproduction rate? We may have missed that announcement.

This leads us to our second question: how do you all deal with the "clothing madness" problem? We have had two kids go bonkers because we could not produce enough clothes to keep them from being embarassed to the point of insanity. Is there a way to assign owned objects?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fort death by ash
« on: February 16, 2012, 10:47:19 pm »
Started in a haunted biome, everything going to plan, when a cloud of fiendish ash appeared, which turned all of my creatures into (fiendish ash husk) versions of themselves. They were listed under the unit list as "Opposed to Life." The fort lasted about 10 minutes before crumbling to dust and...ash. Good times.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / A beekeeping issue
« on: February 11, 2012, 12:23:40 am »
My dwarves are convinced, absolutely convinced that there is a wild hive on a particular tile. The original problem was this: The tile had nothing on it but red sand. No hive, at all. A dwarf would reach said tile, then stand there until he or she was almost starving and dehydrated before returning to the safety of the fort. This happened repeatedly. I tried building a wall on top of said tile to convince them that there was nothing underneath, but they didn't care. They would walk toward the spot, realize that there was a wall in the way, and walk back to the fort. Then I channeled it straight through, no more tile. Undeterred, my intrepid dorfs still believe that there is a hive on a tile that literally no longer exists. What madness is this? What shall I do?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Too much of the good stuff
« on: February 04, 2012, 08:54:00 pm »
I am going to have far, far too much steel in my current fort. Layer after layer of magnetite-heavy chert is followed up by several layers of marble. There is an abundance of coal, and even if there weren't, I've got underground trees for days and days. All of my military (which is as large as I plan on making it) is fully stocked with steel armor and weapons. I won't have enough for any kind of megaproject, but I will have way too much to just let sit there. What do I do? Current plans:

1) Steel weapon trap weapons. Lots of em.
2) More of option 1) for a death labyrinth for prisoners. Fully stocked with a minotaur, who will be kept away from deadly traps!
3) Ammo
4) Ballista Ammo
5) Studding my green glass goblets (Will this even work?)

What else should I do?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fun Factoid (MINOR spoilers)
« on: January 25, 2012, 08:11:33 pm »
A dwarf who enters a strange mood who dies before its completion and has a slab engraved for them will have that artifact's "Human" name on the slab, i.e. "In memory of Urist McDead / 461-563 / Creator of Fireanus / Lover of maggots."

Found out this little tid-bit when an overzealous metalcrafter entered a fey mood before anvils had entered the fort. He was quarantined for his and everyone else's safety. On the bright side, a brand new room just opened for any dwarf who needs it!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Edge of map fortifications
« on: January 19, 2012, 10:49:13 am »
According to the wiki, carving a fortification into the outside tiles of a map will allow liquids to pour off the map indefinitely. Does this mean that an aquifer could be set up to drain off the map to create perpetual flow? Artificial rivers are super fun, and I've only ever drained an aquifer into another aquifer.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Self-induced starvation
« on: January 15, 2012, 11:21:11 pm »
My dwarves are punishing me, but I know not what for. My punishment is par for the course: confused frustration. I have over 1600 prepared meals available, none of them out of reach or forbidden, and yet my dorfs apparently refuse to eat any of them. Instead, they have starved themselves to the point that they are now hunting vermin for sustenance. A spiral is imminent. Why has this happened?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Dwark King Cometh
« on: November 12, 2011, 11:50:26 am »
I finally got me a dwarven ruler. Here's a question: now that I'm a mountainhome, if that king dies, who becomes king? He has no heir nor spouse, and the raws say that the title is passed to the heir. Further, if no one rises to the position after his death, what happens to the civilization?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The dungeon of birthing
« on: October 10, 2011, 09:36:07 pm »
SO, through a fun turn of events, people were thrown in jail and the entire fortress guard was sealed in the caverns to deal with the FB menace. Two of my incarcerated dwraves went insane; one is a babbling fool and the other is incredibly morose. I immediately released all other inmates manually to avoid further madness. The two that are incarcerated... continue to give birth. My dwarves need neither eat or drink, so while these poor souls' husbands yet live, they will eternally produce children for my fort.

Yay!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Oh wow (Coded spoilers)
« on: September 30, 2011, 09:22:00 pm »
I got a new Dwarf Fortress Machine; the people at the store kept calling it a "compyuter." What a bunch of weirdos. Anyway, this new DFM has a fantastic framerate; I can turn the weather back on and use the standard 4x4 embark! Is it true that I'm pretty much guaranteed the Fun stuff?

As the caravans are just beginning their trek to the edge of the map after a long and profitable journey to my fort, the local baron has a realization: all of those gold goblets he traded must. Not. Leave. Of course, the leave anyway. I check my prison records, and I have 18 dwarves serving consecutive sentences for commiting the heinous crime of daring to get rid of anything made of gold. One of my dwavres has a sentence of 1101 days. My baron is a total douche.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Hiding items
« on: September 18, 2011, 06:20:42 pm »
I chose to Hide a bunch of litter around my fortress, and it actually seemded to speed up FPS. Is this a real thing, or am I the victim of a fluke spike in efficiency?

DF Gameplay Questions / Volcano question
« on: June 24, 2011, 01:26:31 pm »
Trying to make a volcano-heavy world; I want them everywhere, particularly in deserts. How do i make this happen?

On an unrelated note: what happens if I reduce the number a cavern layers from three to two?
