DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The best feelings in DF

I'd like to discuss aspects of the game that just make it worthwhile.

First: The last migrant wave. Especially considering how I play (turtled in, drawbridge shields), those migrants throw a wrench into every little thing I try to do. Knowing that there won't be anymore just gives me a sense of...safety. It might be my favorite part of the game.

Speaking of wells, is there a way to prevent that "The bucket's full of water already, so we can't use the well anymore" bug?

I seem to remember reading that dwarves with legendary fighting skills no longer become upset about long duties (haha, duties) like normal dorfs do, but after scouring the ever-helpful wiki, I cannot find anything that says that. So: do legendary fightin' dorfs not get upset about training all year long?

Hmm, all right. COuld one of you gentlemanly scholars point me in the general direction of DFHack, as well as instructions on how to properly install and unistall it from my game? I just want to get it put in, erase my ghosts, and get rid of it.

I don't trust myself to just leave it hanging around.

Using a third party program to fix bugs when they appear (when, not if) is not what I'd consider cheating, unless you use the same program to create entire magnetite layers

The problem is this: that is exactly what I would do. It's a slippery slope; you start with a little clean up. Nothing major, just some tweaks here and there to increase performance. Then it occurs to you that you can view every single layer and all of its ores, so you do that. After all, you woul dhave mined them eventually, right? Then there's that forgotten beast inconveniently wandering the caverns just when you decided that the caverns would be a nice place to explore. It's all downhill from there.

Third-party programs: not even once.

I have ghosts of creatures that died here but were never officially part of my fortress (Traders, their entourage, etc.), and I cannot seem to engrave a memorial slab for these dwarves. Some of them have corpses, but they are inaccessible. What can I do to get rid of these ghosts that float around and eat up my FPS?

Also, in case you were wondering, every scuttled wagon HAS been properly memorialized.

If you don't want to mess with DF Hack, you can just wait until the friendly trader wanders out of the migrant spawning spot. It takes longer, but it eventually works.

A question: could such webs be collected and spun into cloth? If so, you would likely have access to an infinite, free, and valuable resourse should you choose to trap such a creature in the future.

I should note that melting adamantane did not yield input wafers.  Very lossy.

Sorry for not being clear. I used the wiki to try to find some way to skim some extra cotton candy out of the deal, and I noticed that Giant axe blades had 150% efficiency rate for melting after creation. According to the wiki, such a creation would cost a single bar of the blue stuff; in actuality, it took five, and the melting did not have the return that was promised. Is this a candy-only problem, or have things changed since the guru last modified the wiki?

I'm afriad I simply haven't bothered with minecarts. I also use idlers for massive dumpage, so there's no real reason to use them in my forts. Wheelbarrows, on the other hand, are wonderful little tools that everyone should use.

I went into the squad's schedule and changed it from "minimum 2 dwarves" to minimum 1. That seems to have done the trick. Apparently, each one was waiting for the other to start before going. I don't understand it, but there you go. This is why I usually don't use the markies.
