DF Gameplay Questions / A marksdwarf problem
« on: October 16, 2012, 09:20:44 am »
I have set my marksdwarf squad to train. They have wooden and bone bolts, quivers, crossbows, an archery target to which they have been assigned, and a target for each dwarf. Each target has been independently turned into an archery range for the dwarves' use. The dwarves are on the "Active/Training" designation. My dwarves are listed as "At archery practice." They are in front of their targets (the range is long enough that they are not adjacent to the target, and there is floor between where the archer stands and the target; it's not a hole issue). Here's the problem: the dwarves are not firing their crossbows. At all. They stand there, doing nothing, and are listed as practicing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Poll: Annoying animals
« on: October 03, 2012, 09:24:51 am »
We're not talking "danger" here; we're just talking about sheer annoyance. You can vote up to two times. I have listed these five from my own observations and attached a note that explains what exactly they do that annoys me.

EDIT: Added crundles, elves, and butterflies.

Edit 2: Added ravens, trogs, and animal men.

so its the check for line of sight that causes the fps drop? does that mean if you fully explore a cave with a squad of dwarfs then the fps returns to normal?

No, I don't think whether or not a cavern is explored matters. The pathfinding engine in the game goes through every possible route a dorf could take to get from point A to point B; if your caverns are open, the game wastes resources checking to see if your dorf could possibly go through the cavern to get where they are going, thus lowering your FPS. If you wall off the cavern, the pathfinding engine will stop at your constructed wall, saving your game the trouble of needlessly trying to route through the caverns.

It does tend to help. I sometimes mine out an entire z-level, searching for all of the precious metals and gems. Once they are found and stockpiled, I then wall off that z-level from my central staircase. It usually produces a noticable FPS bump.

Urist: "I should take this stuff to the trade depot; we're somehow low on booze and the booze from that caravan will get us through 'til the next crop of helmets sprouts up."

What actually happens
Urist and everyone else: "It's nap/food/break time. I'm not doing ANYTHING."

Cavern problems are made even worse by having such a large embark area. I recently turned off weather in my game with amazing results; fps 25 quickly became fps 50 again.

After a bout of food shortage - the product, I might add, of neglect and mismanagement on my part - I decided to start a facotry system for my foodstuffs. I have enough animals being born that I can continually butcher them for their limited meat, bones, skulls, and hides, and I now have well over 2000 prepared meals. I never wanna go hungry again.

Also, I got a platinum low boot artifact, so that's fun.

As a rule, all of my dorfs are always decked out in robes, trousers, and shoes. I locked my noble and dwarven diplomat in a room. The noble chose, against all reason, to ignore the diplomat until he went stark raving mad. I then locked the noble out of his own room to let the diplomat die in peace. The noble was grumpy for having been denied access to his room, and did not seem to mind finding the diplomat dead by starvation, dehydration, and a case of the crazies.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: A lot of steel

Good ideas, all. The skyscraper is appealing, as are a multitude of steel sarcophogi. I am already pumping stell into my weapon traps, and a pump stack sounds fun.

In my current fort, I am rolling in the good stuff: steel. Aside from the obvious, common uses (weapons, armor, trap weapons), what should I use it for?

I cannot help with the cave-in question, but I offer an alternative: hollow out these stalactites and have your dorfs live there. Secure and tame flying monsters to be released into the caves when threats appear. TAME THE CAVERNS FOR ARMOK. Should that not work, magma. Lots of magma.

Dorf caravan showed up while goblins were finishing up an ambush on several wild Oxen. The caravan was safe - I have a path leading striaght from the edge of my map to the Depot with walls and a ceiling all around - but I suppose my caravan got scared from hearing the sounds of the dying beasts because they unpacked and then immediately packed up their crap. Luckily, it was stuff I would have liked rather than needed, but it's still a little annoying.

It's a rarity, and usually a welcome one; it means I can just about plan the entire fort, top-to-bottom, around a single staircase. Just happened in my most recent fort, minus the cotton candy.
