however, once you have 40,000 dorfbucks worth in a room then every room designated within it will be legendary.

I have an office suite setup, bunch of chairs and tables for various nobles/admin types to have offices and dining rooms, just slap an artifact in the corner

check your created wealth, population isnt the only trigger.  i think created is the other so a batch of precious metal furniture often sorts it out

also remember that you can remelt metal forged objects like armor/weapons and metal furnitures.  this means that as you gain access to better metals/alloys you can upgrade and recycle.  It also allows you to train up your smiths by churning out gear, your soldiers constantly upgrade based on value of the piece and the rest can fall back to the forges:)

Heh, I cant help but feel kobolds got a stealth nerf somewhere recently...from previous versions im well used to thieves that surprise a hauler or fisherdorf getting a stab or 2 in with their dagger, sometimes even fatally due to no armor on said dwarves and daggers small contact area.

In my current .18 fort I have 2 rabbit pups (genesis) tethered as watch/bait and they just killed a kobold thief using their 'push' attacks, they took no wounds.

(kobold dodged the very first shot and hit the wall of my moat taking a stun, 2 pups then 'pushed' him to death over 12 pages)

I very nearly have this on my current .18 embark.  I didnt fiddle any settings, just generated a random world.  My map is only 19z from flat surface to the magma sea with the sea starting directly below the 3rd cavern floor.  I turned cav 3 into my magma forge level:)  All very convenient for hauling but everyone in the fort is disturbed by noise when sleeping :S

figured, since its all imported im gonna stud it with copper and flog it to a caravan.

wouldnt have minded much but i have a crappy no quality cobalt cap with a green diamond design and it seems a shame (genesis mod for the cobalt)

the buckets being used to produce lye were not empty, they probably had a bit of water from some dwarf drinking or hauling water to an invalid.

there is a method to dump the water from them, hopefully someone can correct me if i get this wrong.

'Dump the bucket with d-b-d, wait for it to be picked up, undump it while its being carried, dwarf will empty it at the garbage dump'

Workarounds: 
Churn out a load of buckets right before lye-making jobs and theyll get an empty one
or/and
Import lye

Yeah its fairly common to have a magma pipe extend partway to the surface.  Not sure which version this arrived in.

Having it run all the way to the first is a bonus, i usually find these 'failed' volcanos down by #3.

My turn:

How much water is needed to form ice?  will 1/7 form a full block like 7/7?
How much magma do I have to drop water on to form an obsidian tile?  same deal...1/7 work?

Pretty quick and hopefully simple question....

What happens to decorations on objects that get melted in a smelter?

I'd imagine they are lost, but...figured i'd ask incase its somehow temperature based (gemstones might survive)

I ask since i've noticed that recently (.17/.18?) goblinite is now occasionally decorated with images and symbols of the invading civ

Perhaps you saw it recently in the community games section?  (Think i saw it too)

getting the dwarves to actually spar seems tricky.  sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes not.  i generally use small squads of about 4-5 dwarves, set to train with 1 less than number of members.  I have 4 such squads all in a single barracks, the barracks must be designated from an armor stand not a bed.  barracks designated from beds will only be used for sleeping.

Generally i only have 1 pair from any given squad sparring at a time, though i understand you can get multiple pairs
