DF Gameplay Questions / Re: help, Broker can't navigate to trade depo
« on: December 03, 2010, 06:05:39 pm »
Along the same line of thought, making the depot its own burrow and assigning the broker to it when traders show up is a good way to make sure he doesn't spend too much time pissing off somewhere else.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Caravan guard ghost
« on: December 03, 2010, 11:21:34 am »

Yes you can - dwarves will bury the bodies of all dwarves in coffins, regardless of their origin; even invading "goblinized" dwarves will be given a proper burial.

I've noticed with caravan deaths, you can only engrave a memorial to them if their body is completely lost. Otherwise you have to bury their body for the ghost to disappear. Not sure if that' a bug or not. Ran in to it when I forbid an entire caravan death zone when they walked in to all the goblins.

You didn't unforbid food from the stocks menu did you? I unforbid from antman food that was deep in an undiscovered cave, caused no end of pathing spam. You might be able to see what he's trying to get by doing (j - v) on his name.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Melting items
« on: December 03, 2010, 09:29:39 am »
A lot of them are made of bronze, and I don't seem to have any tin on my embark. So if possible, I'd like to salvage it, just in case.

Ugh. They are all in bins, and I can't get them out without dumping the whole thing.

You can  melt items in bins, just click enter on each item in the bin, then click (m) for melt. Make sure you don't click m in the bin main screen, because it will melt the bin itself.

I've seen this issue with dwarven merchants getting killed and becoming ghosts later. Just build some coffins and place them (and remember to set them for burial). Your guys should go pick up the body and the ghost will go away.

If the body is completely gone, you'll have to make, engrave, and build a slab.

Are they all flocking around your wagon? If so, deconstruct it.

Also build some ropes/chains (b - v) at the entrance to your fort, and assign any animal to it, that will keep them away.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: My dwarf wont farm?

Here's a possible answer, but I'm not sure if it's really the way it works... Is it Late-Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter? I think if it's late season, they wait till the next season to plant the crop.

I believe you can go in to legends mode and see all the FBs, and if they're dead or alive. Pretty sure it doesn't show their location. If your worldgen ran a while you might have had a very small number of FBs left in the first place. You see posts about this in the dwarf forums about entering a new age.

Danger rooms are dangerous, yes those blunt no quality training spears can kill.... I had a dwarf get his brain removed through his shoe, and I don't think he was wearing it as a helmet.

Different players keep saying this, but I've never ran in to the issue, and I've been using the rooms a lot lately, I have a few masterwork training spears in it too.

Make sure you don't use MENACING SPIKES, yea, that will waste your dudes quick.

Make sure you use robes and have shoes on.

Be prepared to lose pets to the room. Not that this is a bad thing, the soldiers will become hardened badasses after enough kitty gore is spread around.

I look at it this way, I run the risk of losing a soldier once in a rare while to the room, versus losing an entire squad to the first siege that shows up because of the much slower training rate.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Goblin Kidnappers

The only time I've had a problem with it is when immigrants wander around instead of heading to my meeting hall. Other then that there are a few ways to keep this from happening too much.

Disable all hunters and fishermen with children.

Keep your buildings and stockpiles behind your fortifications and traps.

Don't give your dwarves any reason to wander around outside your fort. Forbid all chopped wood, rocks and jewels outside your gates, otherwise some dude will think they are the best thing and go out and pick them up to make something out of. If you really want the stuff out there, set a garbage dump zone in your fort in a useful location and mass dump all the stuff at once, if you have any population size, enough dwarves will do this at once that the snatcher will be spotted before he grabs a kid.

Lastly, if other options don't work, assign children to burrows and parents with babies.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Weapons becoming forbidden

I was wondering what was causing my Axelords to carry around a {Adamantine Battle Axe}, this explains it. They still use the weapon.

As necro said, Strand Extraction. Also you may want to use something like DwarfTherapist to see if any dwarves are already trained in strand extraction and that it is enabled. It is very slow otherwise, takes forever for them to get decently skilled at it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Whats your favotire training method?
« on: November 30, 2010, 03:38:32 pm »
OK it says "individual combat drill" does that do anything? Maybe they are training and I don't notice, cause it looks like they just stand still.

If you have the spike running in your danger room, look under (r) at the combat reports. You should see a bunch of "Urist McAxedwarf is fighting" messages consisting of him dodging and striking down the training spears.

The thing is you don't just have that one piece of 'goo', it's likely almost every one of your dwarfs is covered in some kind of FB dust or pus. The reason children are affected by it is they don't put on shoes and cloths correctly.

First get the dfhack utils and run dfclean, you'll have to keep doing this for a while.

Second, well what I would do is, drop a floor tile on the diseased people in the hospital, evacuate the area first.

Third, build a dwarfwasher, plenty of info about this if you search the forums.

You'll want a waterfall and some other nice things around to keep a tantrum spiral from occuring.
