I get a 20-25% mortality rate. I suppose I could add more real spears and bump up the mortality rate, but it works for me.

If you can embark from a dead civ...
and the first two migrant waves are hard coded regardless of civ status...

can I do a serial embark, build for a year, and abandon to build up the civ numbers and get additional migrant waves in the future?

Or can I embark with seven, get the two initial waves, hole up and breed then abandon to give future embarks more migrants?

Although, throwing in the occasional wooden spear is something I do to balance the danger room and train doctors.

I have five fortresses going right now and bounce from one to the other based on what kind of game I want to play.

Maybe the fortress defense mod is the way to go.

Disable one type of hauling job at a time until you determine the type of stockpile.
Then look delete every one of those stockpiles until the messages go away.
Then build new stockpiles.

If this doesn't work, flush to fortress with magma.

I think i have DF-ADD.

I always start fortresses, spend copious amounts of time laying them out with big plans for...um...big things. Then, somewhere between implementation and completion, I lose focus.

What do you do to keep focus during the in process phase of your mega-projects?

You won't recover your FPS from the T-shape until the whole stack fills up with magma.

Another possibility is that you may have a dozen unrevealed ambushes that coincidentally showed up at the same time you started your pump stack...

If you have the number of stills you say you are and are running low on booze, make sure you don't have booze set to cookable.

I haven't done any of the fancy maths but I find 1 farmer, 1 brewer and 1 cook able to way overproduce what I need for 150 dwarves with two 4X4 farms set to change crops by season with an annual purge of random livestock.

Excellent. I will have to devise a wild animal trap to herd the elephants into.

I can set up multiple(100) burrows and assign one dwarf to each to bisect the map.  Once the elephants are on one half of the map I assign half of the dwarves to a new set of burrow, biscting that half of the map and repeat until the elephants are corralled in a small area. Then I open a bridge that leads into the wild elephant farm down by the magma sea and chase them in by stationing one of my squads. Once the elephants move forward I can leap frog another squad continuing to push the elephants down into the depths of the earth. Once they are there I close the lever actuated doors and wait for next year.

Or I suppose I could use some cage traps...
