DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do you handle your booze?
« on: September 21, 2011, 11:01:45 am »
Early on I just use two stockpiles: booze and food. Not counting seed and other not foodstuff stockpiles.

About year five I start to segregate my foodstuffs into four different stockpiles (as set my fort up for expansion). Plants only near my still. Prepared food. Unprepared food (not including plants) near my kitchens, and booze. I am thinking about segregating the kitchen stocks further, but need to finish the "roof over the world" mini-project before I start experimenting with that.

My fort also tends to be segregated into three different areas: upper, middle and lower. In each area I keep a 10X10 booze and a 10X10 prepared food stockpile (and use delivery chutes to drop food into the areas).

Then I have small (2X2 or 3X3) booze and prepared food stockpiles in my burrows that take from the nearest major stockpiles. I burrow like a mofo. Forge burrow, legendary craftsdwarf burrow(s), legendary mason burrow, food and textile industry burrow. Arguably the last one doesn't need much management to ensure they stay in food and booze.

There is a small amount of micro-management early on to make sure the stockpiles furthest from the food source get filled (usually involving un-designating portions of existing stockpiles and rotating "take from" orders) but once they are full I set 10 dwarves on food hauling only and they can keep up with the restocking operation.

Make sure you read my updates. Otherwise you won't know how to stop the water flow. The drownings will stop on their own...

Just channel from the top down carving the castle out of the stone as you go.

...a group of five no skill dwarves to kill a partially incapacitated troll with training weapons?

And is this a decent method of training weapon skills?

only one of my hammerdwarves actually reached hammerdwarf status by now, though this may merely be because two of them are wrestlers.

It helps to give your hammerdwarves hammers.

It's just hard once they're actually started, I guess.

Just un-designate the zone they are partying in.

There is a no-partying rule in all of my forts. If I catch you partying you join the "go outside and pick up socks" brigade. I call them ambush detectors.

Can't you do a stock check for goo/ichor and then zoom to it?

You can't mod in moods as it stands.

Can you mod in madness?

I have been thinking about a daycare/cotton candy machine (sacrificial altar) where you drop your kids off and they give you cotton candy.

Only once you start you can't stop. It will double the chance of getting strange moods, but half of the strange moods you receive results in dwarves going to the altar instead. If you deconstruct/block the altar effect remains so the dwarves go mad and you will have nothing to show for it.

Either way, I plan to make a zombie moat.  Magma moats are expensive, and cost lives.  Zombie moats are cheap, and cost MORE likves!

A proper zombie moat would have multiple rings.
  • A dry moat full of zombie badgers, giant badgers, badger men and badger women
  • A wet moat full of zombie carp
  • A magma moat full of magma crabs

I guess I shouldn't mention that at one point I attempted to make a foragable plant, that when picked would immediately burst into flame.  Indistinguishable from every other common herb, except, it caused intense melting upon being plucked (and caught the map on fire).

I wants it.
