DF General Discussion / Re: Trapping

There are commands for taming captured animals in the kennel interface.  And I believe from the help files you can put cages with animals in them in a zoo for the dwarves to come look at.

I wonder if I can capture and tame that alligator?  A trained attack alligator could be useful to have around and hopefully it would stop him from killing my dwarves and dogs.

Probably just another person who mixes up open source and freeware.

I did mine like this for most of my rooms
code:

#######
#c###c#
#bd+db#
#c#+#c#
###+###
#c#+#c#
#bd+db#
#c#+#c#
###+###

You could also do 3's like

code:

###########
#cbcd+dcbc#
#####+#####
#cbcd+dcbc#
#####+#####
#cbcd+dcbc#
#####+#####

which is a bit wide, but cuts down on how far any dwarf has to walk before getting to their room.  Put the bed next to the door and you save them a step there, too.

The 2x2 rooms do look a bit nicer aethetically, though.

Well, while you can't really make a meal out of just booze, you can certainly use it for cooking.  (Wine in sauces, beer in stews, brandy to make flambe, rum cakes, etc)  But it shouldn't use that much of it compared to other ingredients.

Do you have barracks?  I think they'll only spar in the barracks room, and then only if neither of them is doing something else.

Well it keeps the cheap, and the light is why I recommended pumice (which will float on water).

I think it would take more wood to make a bin out of metal than out of wood.  I think it only takes one unit of wood to make a wood bin, but if you were to forge a bin out of a likely material, say tin, you would be burning wood for charcoal, and you need charcoal for the smelting of the tin, and charcoal for the forging of the bin.  So it may take more wood to make a metal item than a wood item.  (Of course, I'm not sure how much charcoal you get per unit of wood, and apparently if you have coal you can get two units of coal bars from one unit of charcoal, so that is more efficient)

Now if you could make stone bins... hmm maybe from pumice?

I've had a bunch of dogs die from old age, which has filled up a bunch of coffins.  What really kills me is that I had a real dog lover who snatched up dogs as soon as they were available for ownership, so multiple dead dogs were hers and she's gone into temper tantrums.  I just wish dwarves had better ways of dealing with grief than destructive temper tantrums.  Moping and refusing work, praying in a chapel, anything besides destroying stuff and having fist fights because old yeller got too old.

Now personally, I have an injured person who has been resting in the barracks.  It is however a different bed that is defining the barracks.  This is actually pretty nice since the barracks is right next to the kitchen and is also near a well (though I guess that doesn't matter if they run to a river to get water instead)

The only metals I've found so far in my game are silver and tin, hopefully I'll find some more soon.  (And yeah, I'm still on my first game, it was a quiet map and I'm still learning as I go.)

I think we need to get healers working before we start having dwarf cage matches, but since there is already unconsciousness and pain from wrestling you could probably adjudicate matches that weren't lethal (but probably involved enough injuries to need said healers).  Entertainment value to spectators based on wrestling skill of combatants.
