Gilles wasn't happy at having his original plan ruined and having truth doubted by the Banshee. "Well, those are carcasses, and they just kept appearing. It sure wasn't me. If you have any way to check, you should probably know. And I'm afraid we haven't been introduced. I'm Gilles, and you are?" he replied, lowering Solj but keeping an eye on the spiders.

"Hmm, that makes sense. I'd rather not cause any spider deaths, in any case. And Raioyris, did you truly manage to reprogram them? That's a different process altogether."
The lady of the labyrinth answers.
"I have no name but what I am called by. I used to have one, but that was a long time ago.

I think I forgot."

"I'm implying that within the spiders I've repurposed I have yet to observe a murder event.

I guess I haven't changed all of these spiders.

And even so, I can hope to overcome this by changing these spiders further."

"Ah, you're an interesting one. I was right to choose you." she says matter-of-factly. "If you want to build an army, then these little ones won't do. I can help you."

"Spider carcasses."

"Correct! Though to be fair, you did set them up for failure..." she says, chuckling.
"There's two types of spiders in this tunnel. They don't like each other. You'd do well to keep them apart."

"Hmmph," she gives a curt frown. Her hair flows back to reveal empty black eyes, staring at nothing.

"What are these then." she nods toward the spiders behind her, doubling back, holding the carcasses of their fallen brethren.

Reverse turn my eyes back into the normal spider eyes to examine the woman better. Try and see what makes her move silently.

[7 -> 3] She hardly makes contact with the floor. Millenus can see her clothing stiffen and contract to form waves across its surface, as if flowing in the wind, but it seems a bit exaggerated for simply walking through a still passage. Perhaps this has something to do with her movement.

"Subject does not seem to emit heat. Possibly... spectral in nature?

It is not this unit's intention to harm, only to protect fellow sentients. It has not come to this unit's attention that the group has been harming native lifeforms. Please elaborate."

Devote all spare processing power to overwatch. If this figure acts with hostile intent, I want to know before a human could react.

The target presents a radar signature. That indicates either a considerable amount of biomass... or that the target is made out of a conductive material.

Solj continues scanning closely. The Banshee continues sitting down and makes no advances, but the spiders are closing in.

"I have discovered important information regarding these spider creatures. I would be willing to share it in exchange for that metal eye."

Attempt reverse the lens, so that farther images become the sharper ones. Then examine this movement that was mentioned, while waiting for a reply.

[4 -> 1] Millenus delves deeper into the subject of optics. Fortunately for him, the subject of nearsightedness and farsightedness is not actually based on the shape of the lens, but by the physical properties of the system. By adding some distance between the lens and retina, the whole system becomes more like a regular eye, but it loses some of its motion sensitivity. It's also not quite as compact, so it can't be arrayed as easily as a spider's many eyes.

"Heads up, there's some movement ahead. I cannot discern its structure, but it may be hostile."

Try to figure out what's ahead. Maybe thermals would give a better picture?
If possible in the same action, switch to non-lethal bullets.

[3 -> 2] Solj manufactures a plethora of non-lethal rounds: low velocity shells with little momentum and a high structural integrity to minimize deadly fragmentation. The intent is to loosen joints and perhaps cause pain, if the target is biological.
The scans continue, and the thermal spectrum reveals... nothing warmer than the dank air of the labyrinthine webworks.

Gilles was about to start asking questions about the clotted blood and scar when the living gun piped up about movement. The Absalom readily scooped the gun up, though Gilles avoided aiming just then. "Where's it coming from, Solj? And do you have non-lethal rounds? I've made my name doing takedowns without damaging goods, you see."

Prepare for incoming contact, aiming lasso, autocannon (and Solj if it has non-lethal ammo).

Gilles prepares his autocannon, and because there is little room to evade in the tunnel, there will be little room for the target to avoid fire (-1 Evasiveness of target).

Examining his handy work, Raioyris' eyebrow raises "You know when they say 'it isn't surgery?'

Well, it might as well be, because this wasn't that hard."

Gather the memory metal and the eye. Raiyoris unclips the holster on his Samurai Edge, preparing to unload on any hostile that appears.

Hermia stares afar.

Call the spiders to position behind me in nice ranks.

Millenus seems to protest Raioyris' acquisition of the eye, but it seems priorities are priorities. Rai issues the command to his spider throng...

But they seem to be acting under a different master.

Solj was the first to pick up the footsteps. Graceful like the down feather that glides across the floor as one attempts to sweep it up, a female in a colourless gown strides into view. The thermal sensors still pick up nothing.

"Careful where you point those things," She sits down crosslegged, as a spider gravitates and sits on her lap.
"These little ones won't stand a chance. Look at how many you've killed so far!"

"Where did you get that eye?"

Speaking of eyes: Millenus attempts to change his eyes into the seeing orbs of the spiders.

Millenus is able to replicate the appearance with ease, but to really duplicate the internals it may be necessary to pluck out a sample (to get another +1).

As it turns out, the small crystalline orb is actually a lens. Retinae on the inner socket of each crystal eye pick up the bent light. What's interesting about it is that they can alter the focal length through electrically stimulating their eyeballs and changing the refraction index--Millenus is now able to focus his vision without physically distorting his eyes.

[Shapeshift 3+2 -> 2] The spider eyes have another unique property, one perhaps less mundane: they are very sensitive to motion up close, although they offer distorted vision at longer ranges.

Gained Bio-Engram: Spider Eyes (+1 Reflex in Melee, -1 Reflex at range)

"No kidding."

Hermia freaks the fuck out in the background.

"Hm."

Raioyris makes his way to the Azure corpse, Hermia following in hops. Extending his locus, Raioyris begins gruesome work on the body. Salvage the memory metal from the corpse and the targeting eye.

[Surgery 3+1 for tool -> 3] Raioyris carves up the body as best he can. Soon enough it is not only reduced to a stack of Locus Alloy and a healthy targeting system, surprisingly in good shape, but he has also partitioned the body neatly into its constituent organs and major bones.

Objects of Interest:
Laser Targeting System: A rangefinder and vision processing system, able to pick out targets amidst a backdrop and track their velocity and expected position.
-> If connected to nervous system: +1 Reflex on shooting attacks
-> Necessary component for Laser weapons (used to adjust lenses for maximum cutting power). Provides +1 attack bonus to weapon.

Nervous Uplink: With some surgery, this can be used to connect the human nervous system to any computer system.
-> DIFF is 2 to perform the surgery.

Locus Alloy: Can be merged with by another Azure. Must have storage space inside the body, or else be stored outside the body.

"A massive spider? Any more details? When do you think that happened?" Gilles' attention was piqued by the mention of a giant spider.

You notice the man's clothes are somewhat torn, and stained with blood at the waist. The blood is clotted, however, and the fabric has been ripped away to reveal a layer of silk peeling away from a long-healed scar.

Solj rests for now, seeing as there's no immediate crisis.

Solj rests, as well as a gun can rest, at least.
RAEDAR shows some movement up ahead, distinct from the shuffling conga line of spiders. [3 -> 0] The spiders obscure the signature, however, and it's impossible to discern a shape or distance.

Hey would you start a glossary for tems like Locus and races and places. Please.

That would be in the second post. ;)

Gilles handily intercepted Raioyris, putting an armored arm in front of him. "I reckon we weren't shooting it, Rai, or at least we shouldn't be. I've already said that whatever it is, I can capture it if it's aggressive and turn it into profit. And exactly because it might be aggressive, smack dab in front of its cocoon is the last place you wanna be standing on when it emerges." the man explained.

With that said, he addressed the living gun. "Solj, can you scan that and tell whether it's full of spiders or something?"

Prevent Raioyris' stabbing action if necessary, watch the cocoon with weapons prepped.
Using my speed get past Gilles and give the silk a
slash as to open it without damaging what is within.

Hermia hops off Raioyris.

Gilles tries to hold Rai back, [3 --> no 6's] but [8 -> 2] Rai deftly passes under his arm and cleanly tears through the top layer of the cocoon. A viscous lavender fluid pours out, along with an Azure and his toolbox. Curiously, he seems to be lacking a Locus. His clothing is old, but not ancient. And he seems mildly traumatized, but totally conscious.

Earlier:

Check out the corpse.

[3 -> 2] It's a dead Azure. His locus is part of his arm, and is currently half-extruded in the form of a swortsword. It merges with his body with many tangles of flower motifs, and you can tell from his hair that it was replaced with flat ribbons of heatpipes to disperse heat from the advanced targeting system located in his left eye.

The cocoon's occupant, starting to panic, stops his struggling for a bit and tries to call out for help.

It tries to... make a sound... but it comes out as more of a gurgle. Looks like the interior is fulled with some kind of fluid. It sounds like it's trying to talk somehow.

"We must recover the souls trapped inside this heart! Whatever is within this cocoon, it will not stand up to my firepower!"

Ready one heavy attack's worth of explosive rounds, and hope someone points me at the enemy. If the cocoon does not immediately burst, scan its contents.

Solj's internal forge begins producing the necessary arrangement of matter. The attack is ready.

Knowledge check on the Cocoon.

[4 -> 0] It's made of some kind of non-biological silk. Wilbur has spinnerets in his legs/appendages, as well as the spiders/spider carcasses, but neither have a means to produce the silk directly.

Put my spiders to work carrying there own dead to where ever Wilbur wanted them. "It's a sad day for spider kind." Raioyris utters in brief mourning.

Half the spiders obey dutifully, transferring the spider bodies to a safer location. The others squeal in terror at the sight of the corpses, and keep their distance.

They head on forward down the path, disregarding the wayward tunnel.

The silk cocoon begins to shake as if what's inside is trying to get out.

[5 -> 2 Hits] The silk cocoon thrashes around a bit. Due to bad leverage, it will take quite a bit of effort for whatever's inside to break free... this may give the rest of the party time to flee.
(DIFF +1 from inside, 2 Hits normally. 'Spider Silk' is strong.)

((Sorry for being quiet! That moment when a two hour nap turns into seven...))

"I think you just broke my spine." Expose memory metal to my locus in order to reincorporate it.

"Sorry. Here." Gilles returned Raioyris the pieces of metal that had broken off his locus and began examining the beating heart. It seemed his plan of making a routine run to establish a buffer zone in the Labyrinth and peddling his merchandise there was going to get postponed. "This is strange. Any information on it?"

Raioyris is forced to extrude new Locus elements, and then painstakingly allow heat to transfer into the broken-off pieces without the natural heat-vent connection. It takes a while, but eventually they are re-heated to the point where the elements are semi-molten. They then retract into his back, where the internal forge sets about fully liquefying them.

Activate mage power to communicate with the living... -thing. Focus on reading information from the beads.

Raioyris attempts a connection: [3 -> 3!!!] He sees it all: mountains of dead spiders, each the size of a human; artifacts on both sides illuminating the... bookshelves? There was a massive battle at some point, and each of these clusters of beads contains its own perspective, its own story to tell, regarding this huge war. Raioyris could stand there for hours... but he feels a prodding at his side.

...Hey spider leader, can you have your spiders(living ones) carry my dead spiders back to my locker?

*Holds dead spider over own spider body for example*

I'd be one happy s...salesman.

Raioyris seems preoccupied with his human things. Wilbur, with nothing better to do, daydreams a bit.

Quote
"You can't be serious!"

Said the brood queen. Spiders in this day and age were born in what was basically a factory, not to a mother, but each generation had a queen assigned to it, rearing the spiders into maturity.
The spider-council responded with an iron determination. "The survival of all of us is at stake; lest we forget, the Children of the Moon have sailed the stars. Surely we only exist as we do because they have let us. We are their playthings. There is no other choice."

"We will cease to exist!" shrieked the queen. "The new progeny will bear no resemblance to the old. It is as if we are doing the Exterminators' job for them!"

"Existence is better than non-existence. You advocate for the destruction of your own species, we offer protection, and a future guaranteed. One day we shall rise again, and that hope is enough for us.
Trifle with us no longer. The future is set in stone."

"He he he. That reminds me of a running joke."

Get as much information about the heart as possible using sensors.

[3 -> 2] It's cold (not emitting much IR radiation) and its acoustic properties are consistent with it being made of thin membranes and a somewhat viscous liquid. RAEDAR is strongly absorbed in some wavelengths by the liquid, but passes through the rest, allowing Solj to analyze its structure. (+1 to all attacks Solj makes/is used to make against the target)

Its internal structure is... interesting, to say the least. There are numerous cavities that are hollow, save for a cluster of beads hanging in the center of each one which have strong absorption. A densely-packed Plexor nexus in the center of the heart suggests that this... creature is actually alive, and perhaps thinking.

"I'm not sure those are mine... Wilbur, curious what makes you tick?" Count the living spiders I have amassed.

Also unless it interrupts prying the door try to reanimate the dead ones with mage power in the same way I converted the live ones.

Raioyris counts thirteen living spiders. This is the highest number of living spiders in your following so far.

Use my locus in the gap like a lever.

"It's a start."
"Yeah, about expected. That's too little firepower." Gilles commented, having the Absalom's hands grab Raioyris' locus and help him force the seam open. He also noticed the dark pile nearby. "And Raioyris, why a pile of spider corpses? That's both morbid and worrying. What's causing their deaths?"

Help Raioyris.

Raioyris himself is too scrawny to use the tactic effectively, but Gilles gives him a hand. [3+2 -> 3][3+5 -> 5] It hurts! The locus has receptors for pain, but only pain which causes a fracturing of the memory alloy that means...

Gilles is left with two diamond-hard elements acting as prybars to remove the wall with. They've lost their motive aspect and are now solid chunks of memory metal, far tougher than steel but also brittle, as was just demonstrated.

Using the extra leverage, Gilles handily lifts the concrete slab buried into the wall. Inside the compartment is a massive heart, clearly non-human. It has several bubble-shaped ventricles, each transparent and filled with varying amounts of fluorescent lavender-colored fluid. It could be visualized as more of a pump than a heart, but its eerie, regular thumping rhythm and pulsating appearance suggests otherwise. Elastic cables suspend it from the ceiling, and it hangs down to waist height.

In the space behind the heart are spider carcasses, long dried out and hollow. The eyes and internals are missing, as if the whole body was shed like a skin, and an irregularly-shaped tunnel winds up into the space above. A large silk-wrapped cocoon sits near the heart, on the edge of the passage.

"A hammer is unnecessary. Explosives are much more energetic."

Prepare an Explosive Round. If someone would like to point me at the wall, loose a single bullet and see what effect it has.

Solj hums as his internal nanosystems fabricate a shaped explosive charge. He fires it into the wall, and the explosion echoes despite the narrow enclosure.

Unfortunately, the small 12.5mm round holds too little explosive to reasonably dislodge the stone. It takes more than just energy to force material aside, and much of the energy is dissipated in a burst of dust..

The shaped round does punch a small hole, not quite all the way through but a fair distance. The barrier is at least 15cm thick, if not more.

Eh, all I did was mow down some blokes and almost die. But I am definitely excited for a full game with some plot.

"...Hmm, did you see that?" Gilles asked before moving towards the wall and checking it. He began examining the area, the suit's auxiliary skeletal arms trying to find the seam and wrench it open.

Do as the flavor says.

Prying it won't do, the seam is much too narrow for any sort of fingers to slip between the cracks.

"See what?"

If Gilles tells Raioyris about the seam extend my locus from my spine to pry away at seam.

[3+2 -> 2] Gleaming tendrils emerge from Raioyris' spinal column, through his jacket, and the edges flatten themselves into blades, still glowing with the warmth of a miniature Starforge. He waits for the ends to temper, being under no time pressure), and applies leverage through the edges. Unfortunately, the thin Locus tendrils are not able to exert enough force to dislodge the bricks. The wall has proven very resilient ((DIFF 5)). It is, after all, part of the foundation for a massive tower.
((You need 5 hits on the wall in a single turn to open it. If your actions support each other, though, you can split these hits between multiple people))

"Wilbur, you used to do that, right? Do you know how to undo locks?"
(Ah. Would it be lazy of me to ask for #Wilbur in black font when someone needs me to respond/act, sometimes it can get lost in the fonts and colors the little things)

Start dropping off the carcasses on my party members. (RPing I didn't hear question)

Here!

Wilbur moves to and fro, amassing a steadily-growing pile of spider carcasses which pile up near Raioyris, Milenus, Gilles, and the talking weapon. The pile has almost surpassed half the number of confirmed living spiders.

Some of the carcasses he passed by on his return trip seem to have disappeared.

Examine the dead spiders to see how they would have worked.

Millenus inserts his hand into the spider carcass. His Pandora cells multiply to fill in the spaces and discover that the spider's bodies are mostly hollow, separated into a pressure chamber for each leg. There are no motors, only membranes separating the spaces, in addition to a single round power bead that functions much like a battery. The head contains most of the thinking materials: several sight orbs and a plexor nexus housing the spider's mundane soul. As far as useful materials go, the most valuable parts are the sight orbs, which can be used for sight, as their name would imply.

Gushing from the spider's corpse is a sticky, but non-viscous lavender-colored fluid, appearing pale tan under torchlight.

"An ominous air hangs around here, gentlemen. Judging by yon dessicated corpse, this area is more hazardous than previously believed."
((I assume that Solj can see yon desiccated corpse even without the momentary light, given that it is equipped with various sensors like IR and sonar.))

Scan the passageway for hostiles.

The weapon's quiet humming seemed to reverberate through the hall. This would, by itself, indicate a very peculiar acoustic profile, but Solj was already scanning for hostiles by the time the Banshee of the Webwork showed up on its RAEDAR feed. Once a mythical creature, Banshee sightings have fluctuated in the past decades, on average a single sighting per year. Rumor has it that Adventurers visited by the Banshee are destined for great success in the labyrinth, but also a horrible death; there are no remaining survivors, all of whom died in subsequent visits to the Labyrinth.

The Banshee does not show herself for long. A fluttering gown in the darkness turns round a corner and darts out of sight. But the singing continues, long after it ended. Solj's casual humming now fills the halls with off-key variations on the main theme. A deep note repeats itself like a drum, not from the Banshee's voice, but from somewhere else. It seems to be coming from the walls.
