DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Does Dorfs give YOU OCD?

I like flat embarks because I build my fortress all aboveground, and try to make a town too. None have really made it to the "town" part though...

I hate aquifiers so much I just mod them out. Seriously, to elves with them!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Does Dorfs give YOU OCD?
« on: October 02, 2011, 06:15:49 pm »
I swear I don't have OCD for real but, in DF? All the time. I've been trying to find a nice embark that is flat, but has a volcano. A source of water, such as a brook or river, would be nice but I'd be fine with just the volcano.

I've found a few that are flat and have a volcano but then when I start making them... I just get annoyed at little things. I start making my starting little fort, and start to tunnel to where I want to put my magma forges but then they just feel too far from the fortress itself! And then I'm mining in it too, so then it doesn't look all... planned.

Anyone else experience OCD tendencies, but only when it comes to DF? Time to gen up a new world and hope I can find a flat area with a volcano again...

Then again, at least I can just floor over the water. Can't really do much about buzzards when they just fly in everywhere...
Design a defensive magma curtain using a pump stack linked to a Midgar like roof construction that quickly and evenly distributes lava in all directions creating a near solid wall of impenetrable magma.

It is the obvious solution.

That sounds incredibly and overly complex.
It's very dorfy.

I finally thought I had found a nice embark without buzzards.

Then they came. Dammit, just PUNCH the things, stop spamming with job cancellations because you won't punch the darn things in the face! Darn underground-dwelling people don't have to worry about this kind of thing!

Humans & Elves won't build towns in swamps either, just like badlands.

Just sayin'.  No buzzards in the swamps...

But then there's pools of water everywhere! Stupid water!

I'd reset for a chain, then build it into a well.

Each gem is a link in the chain?

What are some modding options for getting access to silk aside from phantom spiders (useful, but not always certain to get when I pick an evil forest) or GCS? If I recall Genesis uses silk worms... is there a way to make silk grow but make it count as well, silk?

..."Because she's the hero that Spikebathed deserves, but not the one it needs right now... and so we'll hunt her... because she can take it... because she's not a hero... she's a silent guardian, a watchful protector... a Watery Knight..."

Technically she's a heroine, not a hero...  :P

Cave crocodiles, when you mod the game to not need a DM. They lay a looooot of eggs.

Clay is a great building material, if you've got magma.  If you're working with charcoal and clay, then you might as well just build the logs into the wall because it will cost the same number of trees as clay bricks would.  Clay is also fun for the uniform color, but otherwise not efficient without magma.

The "10 planks" modding has issues, namely that it tends to take one plank and make another 10 planks, because the only good way to make it work is to have a "plank" be counted as a "log" and then it'll just grab "a log" which means "a plank that is actually a log".  Easier would be to produce 10 blocks from 1 log, clean and smooth.

Actually the mod workshop will not run into that problem. I don't seem to have the raws handy, I think they're on my desktop, not my laptop. It should be in the modding section somewhere however.

Alternatively, you can mod in a workshop (there's one somewhere) that will turn logs into 10 "planks". This will make building stuff out of wood vastly easier.

Magma is a synonym for Fun.  Try a less Fun liquid, like water.

I don't know, water is a pretty Fun liquid if you break into an aquifer or an ocean. Or a river. Or any pressurized water source.

Welcome to Dwarf Fortress.

Losing is fun!

My first fortress was probably lost by me abandoning it, because if there's no some kind of danger once in awhile, I feel like I'm not doing something right.

Gives you a lot of microcline and orthoclase, really.

Pretty much this.
