DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

my fat stocks are way high now, at least over 9000, so i've been designating mass dumpings.

even with each dwarf hauling it'll take a long ass time to get sorted.

No, you fool, render it into tallow and make lye from ash and make soap! It'll slightly increase your dwarves' life expectancies!

so... slow....

FPS is down to 14, now, though only occasionally does it drop that low. Usually it's ~17. I fully regret this decision. Note to self: designate hell to be smoothed in small patches.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: High boots foreign
« on: February 03, 2014, 01:02:16 pm »
Eeeeeeeeyup, that happens sometimes. It's because in the dwarven entity raws their rarity is COMMON, not FORCED, so occasionally you don't get high boots. I don't know if adjusting entity raws requires a world regen to apply.

the dreaded good-aligned mountains
Please elaborate :o

Probably dreaded because dwarves (in worldgen) can only settle in neutral mountains, and like oceans mountains are all or nothing so you can get a honking great yellow mountain range that dwarves just won't build mountain halls in.

You should mine slade and make a minecart grinder trap with slade boulders in the carts.

Just because.

Eh, maybe. For the moment, as of 18th Opal 235 I've just set all adult dwarves with no moodable skills to smoothing the circus because why the hell not. Incidentally, this halved my FPS.

I finally figured out why the clown car didn't open!

Spoiler: Spoileriiiiiiiiite (click to show/hide)

In other news, children are less than half my fort. And no one's died in a while. And the humans are sieging us again. And I am SO BORED.

On the other hand, dumping all the worn clothing into the magma tube seems to be good for FPS, 'cause I'm at 35 and steady right now.

Because a player-run fortress is where the dwarven civilization sends its least-wanted citizens.

Why are goblins seen as evil when, by snatching children, they are saving those children from their fate of being tormented in a player-run fort?

DF Suggestions / Re: Suggestion for improved armour
« on: February 03, 2014, 11:20:21 am »
Before we get more variety in armor, the armor system itself needs to be revamped. Because right now it's very simplistic and illogical. Helmets can't cover the face, at all. A shirt can, somehow, protect fingers but not hands. And even if you do mod in more armor pieces, civs will just randomly decide which armor pieces to actually use, even if they're all defined as common in their entity. And there are plenty of other things as well.

On making sure a civilization uses an item: COMMON only means they'll probably have it. You want FORCED to make absolutely certain an entity will have access to certain items.

... Which I now remember I modded into my versions of DF for tunics, trousers, and shoes, and then completely forgot I did so and so don't count when I'm enumerating the ways my play diverges from vanilla. But that's off-topic.

Why do dwarves decide that the best place for seeds is to store them all in one barrel?

Because all the best things come in barrels!

Why do dwarves choose the closest rock relative to them and not to the workshop they'll then have to haul it to?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: No snow forever?

WOAH!

That was surprising!

The oceans froze.. FOR ONE FRAME!

It was a split second, frozen, unfrozen again. This is great.

Was it Opal 14th/15th? That happened to me once in a long-ago fort.

As for migrants... eheheheheh yeah they do that. Have fun!

"Honey, let's NOT flood the fortress with our progeny."

-snicker- Ahhhh, the Abyssink...

Hm. Aha. Let's see.

"What? You want me to take my pick and go stand in the middle of the checkerboard you dug out right above the candy cane? How about HELL NO."

WELL. LET'S SEE IF ALL THIS WORK WAS FOR NAUGHT. (50/50 on which candy cane is noisy! Hey, if the trapped one is silent then nobody needs to die this month.)

24th Sandstone, 234

I managed to drill a nearly direct hole 30 z-levels down my first try. WATERFALL TIIIIIIIIIIIME!

... wait. Shit. I should probably not have fortifications there, because I don't have a shut-off valve up top--

Edit, 1st Timber: AAAAAAAAAAAAND we are officially flooding the first cavern. WHOOPSYSHIT

Edit2, 11th Timber: I've got 15 pages (big ones) of nothing but "cancels build wall: my feet got wet" and the first dwarven casualty. Unib Holeportals isn't dead yet, but she will be as soon as she hits the grou--

...

i missaw
there are
five
corpses
already
down there
erith holeportals, kivish holeportals I, mosus utteredinks, uvash skinnycave, and melbil gulfchannel

fuck this shit i'm savescumming

Edit3, 1st Sandstone #2: Okay, nobody dead this time, thoroughly enclosed, and this time the shutoff hatch is at the top anyway so WOO! Also, dug out the magma line and that's going swell too. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Edit4, 16th Sandstone: AAAAAAAAAAAND magma is flowing! And nobody died! And now it's time to pick the sacrificial Abyssink!

Second entry in the pump stack saga
YOU WANNA PLAY LIKE THAT YA FUCKIN IDIOT MASON?
FINE
GET COOKED.
I DON'T CARE, YOU'RE EXPENDABLE. MAGMA IS NOT.

-snicker-

The first five times I read this I misread "MAGMA IS NOT" as "MAGMA IS HOT" and I thought you were telling the mason "DON'T PLAY IN THE MAGMA, IT'S HOT. WHAT, GONNA IGNORE ME? SEE IF I CARE, YOU'RE EXPENDABLE". Works either way.

With the hatch levers fully linked and the magma cistern's hatches confirmed to be magma-safe, it only remains to pull water and magma down to fill the cisterns.

I'm not going to invade the third cavern just to get a source of water closer to the checkerboard, so pulling from the brook it is. This'll be fun, I have to navigate around the second and third caverns. I think I'll apply some fortification-reveal tactics to that. I'm pretty sure there aren't any projectile-weapon FBs in there...
