wasn't it changed so hammerers administered beatings by hand instead of hammer now? Supposedly to make things less lethal

I don't think so. The Fortress Guard always use their fists nowadays, but I'm 99% certain hammerers still hammer.

The wiki is wonderful.

I completely get where you're coming from, because goddamn this game has a learning cliff, and because your experiences seriously sound sucky. I've been playing since 2010 and while I think I'm pretty good by now I've pretty much given up on certain aspects for the moment due to them being too much of a pain in the ass to be worth it.

Pretty much nobody would argue that the UI doesn't suck assballs sometimes, which is why there are such glorious third party things as Dwarf Therapist to keep us from going stark raving mad. Or melancholy. Or berserk. Or going into a fell mood and making a statue of Scamps out of the Toady One.

And yeah, DF is still being updated. Toady's got a serious case of feature creep going on which is why the latest available version is from 2012, but the most recent devlog is from just less than a week ago.

Pretty sure I'm just gonna go with a patriarchal list. I can't mod the raws to follow the correct trends, but every male dwarf who enters the fort will grant his name to his familial line from then on down. His wife will have to deal with it.

I think I'll do English translations, too, since dwarvish requires special characters that escape my ability to input. Can someone direct me to a dwarven dictionary (for the first names)?

I can get you a pastebin of the edited language file from Phoebus that doesn't have any diacritics so you can search it!

Speaking of no diacritics, that's just what I do. ่rith becomes Erith and such.

One last note: wherever there is mud, there will be tree growth. I would construct roads through the drainage tunnels if I were you. It's the only thing that stops plant life.

Nnnnot quite. Stockpiles suppress plant growth while active, although once removed after a significant period of time you will get abrupt tree growth. It's still a good replacement if you're low on materials.

Sarvesh Abyssink-Twinklingdiamond has been ecstatic lately. She gained a sibling lately.

Rakust Abyssink-Twinklingdiamond is 16 days old, born on the 17th of Moonstone in the year 221.

Lielac has been quite content lately. She has contemplated portmanteau surnames lately. She has pondered dwarven familial relationships lately. She wants to ask VerdantSF a question.

Oh, also there's a werellama. Whaddever.

ON the @VerdantSF question: you've got an obscenely long-lived fort, right? I'd like to check out the familial relationships there, because the wiki is under the impression that only royalty has grandparents, uncles/aunts, nieces/nephews, or cousins, and I have two walking disagreements. Well, one, because Sarvesh just grew to become a child, but whatever. Rakust still exists.

Also, I did away with the numbering of childerbrats. Too much of a pain.

Well, he went with patriarchal due to his current monarch being male, with the family name going back to the farthest observable male family member in fort mode. For me this is usually maybe two generations back. Femdorfs who marry take ona hyphenated name of thier original and thier husband's surname while the kiddies are named with the father's surname. Any relative who migrate then take on whatever the in-fort established surname is for the whole family to save the headache of renaming large numbers of dwarves.

I went with matrilineal surnames because there really aren't enough matriarchies around, but it does turn out that my current monarch is a queen. For me it works like this:

Dwarves without in-fortress parents take on the translation of their surname. Children of these dwarves take and keep their mother's surname. Grandchildren take on a hyphenated name, although I might start doing things like "Sarvesh Abyss-Twinkling" instead of "Sarvesh Abyssink-Twinklingdiamond" or give in and do the matrilineal thing because when I finally get great-grand children oh fucking god. But I want a way to distinguish between "yet another of Minkot's brood" (she's still at 20 kids but her youngest is 9 months old, and her children are more than half the native-borns) and "another grandkid! W00T!"

... Maybe I'll go with bilineal desce--

11th Obsidian, 221

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

--descent like I do with grandkids. Then all of Minkot Abysssink and Inod Shakenchanneled's kids will be Abyss-Shaken, and the late Id Twinklingdiamond and Cilob Paddlemirror's Twinkling-Paddle, and then Sarvesh and Rakust will be Abyss-Twinkling because it always takes the first half of the name and the mother's name-part goes first. So it'll be sort of matrilineal. Minkot is gonna have so many people who can trace their ancestry to her...

Also, Sarvesh got possessed on 2nd Obsidian and is now scampering around getting stuff.

Edit: Nope, hyphenated names look ugly, and frankly Minkot deserves to lord it over the rest of the fortress because she's a friggin' matriarch. (I have three living, by the way. Minkot of Abyssink, Alath of Utteredinks, and Ushat I of Holeportals. Id of Twinklingdiamond was my only matriarch who married in-fort and left 7 children [2 of which are dead], while Minkot, Alath, and Ushat have 20, 20, and 17. )

Alright, so i need to make my "guard squad" have 1 guy in it with crap military skills, and give him a training weapon?

One guy who's clumsy, weak, quick to tire, and slow to anger.

Try to remove those doors with dwarfpower.

There shouldn't be any need for that. I've successfully deconstructed tables with a cave-in directly on top of them, which surprisingly didn't destroy said tables. On the other hand, the tables were artifact, so... -shrug- Try it anyway.

Lielac, why is it that whenever I see you've posted here I know I'm going to get a hearty chuckle, as opposed to my standard half-arsed grin?

I have no idea, but thanks! :D

A year ago the first native-born couple married, and on Opal 7th their child was born. Only now did I realize that 2201107 Basementinsight is the first ever second-generation native born to one of my forts.

Such a good feeling, isn't it :).  Grats!

Sarvesh is definitely going to be coddled and treated like a queen.

Also, I'm going to shamelessly rip off your full-name-replacement thing and see what matrilineal lines I get. 20 Abyssinks...

Her name is Sarvesh. She is special, she is a first, and so she will be granted her name, although she will still not have her number removed until she comes of age.

Also, she has an uncle who's three months younger than her. Goddammit, Minkot, your kids are like half the fort by now.

Sarvesh's stats:

Also, 12th of Felsite is when the twins grow up.

Edit: Nope, Minkot Abyssink's children are only a quarter of the fort. The ones that are here, anyway. She has 14 who didn't migrate over and 34 total. And she's 125, so she'll be popping out childers for a while yet. DWARVES NEED MENOPAUSE

I have a black bear bone scepter named The Tongue of Moistness. Different type of bad joke, but it... suggests things to me.

Hell yes.

This is actually the 39th artifact in the fortress, but it's the only one I actually care about.

In non-fort news, my feline master is curled up on my lap purring vigorously and occasionally rearing up to knead her paws on my chest.

I don't know how it got there but there's a capybara running around my fort and I don't know how to get it out.

Miner(s) and/or woodcutter(s) in an impromptu squad, sic squad on capybara. Should take care of the problem.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Artifact iron chain leggings
« on: January 22, 2014, 08:03:09 pm »
Both leggings and greaves are shaped items, so only one can be worn on the legs at any time. Both cover the same amount of the body, so if you have an artifact leggings and artifact greaves then it only matters what material they are. If you just have artifact leggings, give them to your most badass dwarf.

I have a fortress with noxious clouds that cause everything to bleed to death within seconds. Should I undertake the monumental task of roofing over my entire embark area in order to render the surface survivable to my dwarves? It would make sieges more interesting, since at the moment all they do is show up and die. It would allow me to recover twenty years of lost goblinite. And my magma landmines are already powerful enough to repel most sieges that show up...

HELL. YES. Roof it, roof it all, it's the dwarfiest thing! Don't forget to tally the bodycount!
