SRM? Apologies for ignorance...

I think Crashmaster meant SMR, or Semi-Molten Rock. I didn't even notice the transposition of the M and the R when first reading over this topic.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Insane Dwarven Birth Rate?
« on: April 08, 2013, 05:09:34 pm »
The default birth cap is pretty insane - it means that you can have 100 children or ten times your population, whichever is the lower (meaning the minimum is 70 children at 7 dwarves and the max is 100 once you have 10 dwarves). And that's only for births inside the fortress, not migrants. This is obviously ridiculous. I set mine to 20:5.

Technically it's ten times the population of adult dwarves, but I see what you're trying to say. ;D

Spoiler: Lots of big images! (click to show/hide)

FUCKING NECROMANCERS

UPDATE:

That was ‼fun‼. RECLAIM TIIIIIME
probly not worth the reclaim if it was necromancer-rushed the first year. Try making a refuse quantum stockpile next time, with a minecart that dumps the refuse over a hatch linked to a pressure plate in front of the minecart that triggers from civilians. Oh, and try not to engage undead directly, ever. Make a trap tunnel and let them walk in, there cant be too many in a first year rush like this, a few cage traps can do wonders and catch the necromancer too.
Thanks for the tips! I'm going to make a new world anyway because I want MOAR WATERFALLLLLS (and bigger. Bigger waterfalls are MOAR FUNNNNN)

Dear carp:

Thank you for the entertainment when you drop off the waterfall and slam into the floor grates I installed for the safety of my dwarves. Your unpleasant deaths result in much amusement for me, even if you do surprise my dwarves and interrupt them while eating.

Sincerely,

Overseer Lielac of Lanceanvil

Yet another fort. I was bored and decided SOD this flat-embark lark, I want a WATERFALL! And a waterfall I now have. This might well be... interesting. On the other hand, I have white sand and fire clay, so FUCKING WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!

Just halved the population by sending out my hunters, woodcutters, and miners against a small siege. Now everyone's pissy and GOD is it entertaining.

LOSING IS ‼FUN‼

If it really bothers you, build floors. Otherwise, enjoy the funky colours.

Is it possible to collect clay and sand through floors? The funky colours don't bother me: I want to be able to collect the clay and sand.

e:f,b

Noop. You need bare sand and clay to collect them, unfortunately.

Floors don't solve the problem of the fungus and moss preventing access to sand and clay.

715
If you place a lot of fast-eating grazers on the layers, they'll clear out the fungus/moss for you. Just make their pasture also a sand or clay collection area, and whatever bald patches they create will be available to your dwarves.

How did you call up the dwarven justice screen?

Moi?

[z], and then it's one of the several options up top that can be chosen between using the arrow keys. The wiki says it only comes up once you've appointed a sheriff or captain of the guard, but I saw it before that. It might require a mayor or a certain number of dwarves.

We have struck magma and adamantine! I'm either going to make a pump stack to get the magma up to where I want it, or make a spiral ramp down to where it is. I can do either, I've got enough room straight down to the sea for it.

...Probably a pump stack. I haven't done anything ‼dwarfy‼ to in this fort yet.

717
This is a most ‼dwarfy‼ thing to read over my bowl of ☼fruit loops☼. I don't understand H's death, though. :(

Hello, there! Lemme just finish up these prison cells and I'll have you nicely settled in to be my bookkeeper/manager for ETERNITY.

Edit: Uh-huh. Nice try, buddy.

Well. 154 when he kicked the bucket. My fortress is 5 years old. Bloody migrants...!

The one thing a noble should never, ever like are large gems. Production mandates for those are a sure recipe for desaster.

This touches on a question I never got answered, mostly because it pains me to do so ingame. Can stones become large gems? Sounds unlikely. Cutting stones and then encrusting them on stuff can probably be valuable in the long run though. Much like engraving it helps a bit to make dwarves happy.

I think they can, because I recall foolishly making my Baron a large gem lover and then immediately getting a large gem mandate, and I cut a shitton of rocks until I got enough large gems to please her. Which did eventually happen. I think.

Top secret aerial footage from The Merged Fountains' new fortress, Lancevines:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's... beautiful

What does it do?
Look pretty. Also, it's the ground floor of a 100-z tower. And its center will be a 2x2 tube to drop kittens and goblins down. And when I get to making it, the top will be a shrine to Armok. I'd go into glorious detail, but I'm on my phone and thus can't pull out all the pretty pictures I have. (Also I haven't made any yet.)
100 z-levels consisting of 1442 units of material for walls alone? That would take 144200 units of materials only to build the walls for those 100 levels. Oh man, even with 4 blocks per stone it'd take 36050 units of raw stone, with each stone processed into blocks first.

Good luck with that. keep us updated, man. bonus points if it's all the same color of stone!
Hehehehehe. I have fire clay *and* red sand, I'll be fine. The whole tower won't be along these lines: I'm just going to build high enough to accommodate ~300 dwarves, and then the eight outer circles will narrow to become the legs of either a table or a cone in the sky, the summit of which will be whence I drop enemies of my fortress. This being, of course, goblins and cats. And elves if I can figure out how.
