I've found that if you have a bunch of equally inexperienced dwarfs squads of 2 helps them train quicker, as they seem to spar more, which is the best (non-danger room) way of them to gain skills. 

I've not used any danger rooms and tend to have dwarfs get up to about lvl 6 or 7 fighter after the first year or so if I put them in a squad of 2 together and have them train at least 9 months of the year.  Later, I add more dwarfs to the squad so the experienced ones can teach them up (although I'm not sure about how quick that process is).

I'm starting to think my fps lag has more to do with the fact that I love to breach all the caverns and find the magma sea ASAP.  It seems that dwarf influx doesn't reduce FPS as much as those things.

Also, since Toady hasn't yet fixed the "new liaison every year" bug, all you have to do is allow the meetings to take place (or kill the dwarf conducting the meeting, causing "Diplomacy Stymied - A diplomat has left unhappy") and let it leave - next year, you'll get an ordinary human diplomat instead.

In my experience you don't even need to kill the dwarf conducting the meeting, you can just replace him as whatever noble he is, and the diplomat will leave, and you can then switch back to the same dwarf if you so desire.

DF Gameplay Questions / Subterranean Race

So I haven't had much interactions with subterranean races, and my current map has cave swallow people, which is no big deal.
I'm just curious as to why the ones that don't have jobs as either blowgunner or spearman are listed as friendly, while those that do have those military jobs are hostile.  Is this normal?  If I kill the hostile ones will the rest just sit there like nothing happened?  Will the hostile ones actively try to kill any of my units that approach?

I've never had strange moods require a specific kind of item, don't know why people say it happens.
99% likely that he wants silk thread or cloth.
That's what I thought... until I had a dwarf that wouldn't pick up a metal bar until I smelted just what his favorite type was.  It happens... sometimes.

I've had more crashes in .18 than in all other versions I've played (although I skipped .17).  Can't figure out what's causing them either.  Just get an error window saying that DF has stopped responding and the process is being terminated.   
I find myself saving a lot more this version so that I don't have to redo as much.

Yeah, last FB I faced with breath ended up being punched to death by a farmer as it boiled in its own breath.  Of course it fought the farmer because it resisted my attempts to lure it in to my fortress out of the underground lake until I got bored and sent my apparently unneeded military away.

Thanks, changing the region raws worked like a charm.  I didn't realize that the raws were also in the specific save folders, so I just did the general raws before.

So I figured I'd never get a bugged dungeon master so I edited all occurances of PET_EXOTIC with PET in every creature file, hoping to train a jaberer (and maybe some other animals) that I had caught.  Unfortunately, my kennels still won't let me train it.  Is this because I caught the animal before I changed the raws?  Is there something else I need to do? Will I need to gen a whole new world (cause I really don't want to have to do that)?

I would like to see family size immigrant waves. Dad's a farmer with some brewery, Mom's a tanner with butchery, and they have two children, a cat, a dog and a horse. And maybe they have a hired hand who is a fighter-3, milker. And if you do good export-wise and earn a big wave, they bring their friends George and Michelle with them.

So the total wave size is somewhere between 1~6 dwarves plus children and animals, with 6 being hard-earned and two being more typical.

Seems like this would increase the number of immigrant children.  And I hate children.

This problem plagues me with every fort, it seems.  I have never lost a dwarf to wildlife, not once, at all.  Nor do I tend to see much wildlife in general.  Tends to be maybe 5 or 6 prey animals on the map, and never see anything else.

I once lost a dwarf to a normal crocodile in a normal swamp, which has made me afraid to embark on a terrifying area.  But maybe I'm living in fear of nothing.  I'll have to bring the terror to my next fort.

I built a room under the channel, which flooded.  Then I walled off the channel.  I have a farm now!

If only I could get the little buggers to haul wood to my Stockpile...  they still aren't doing it.

Could someone maybe spell that one out, slowly, for someone stupid like me?

Next time, if you have a murky pool right next to where you want your farm room, if you channel, do it on the level above, and then the water will flood the room on the same level.  Alternatively you can just used d->d and mine the wall between the room and the pool on the same level, and that will open the wall and flood the room.  It doesn't need to be a channel.

If he hasn't collected any metal bars, check his material preferences - it's very likely that he wants a specific metal.

You mean check his material preferences in his status description?  I'll look there, I thought they would just take what material was available of the proper type when they're in a mood though.

Yes, in his Thoughts and Preferences page - a dwarf that "likes rose gold" may absolutely insist on making his artifact out of rose gold, refusing to use any other kind of metal (or, if you've got Adamantine, he might insist on using that).

Thanks.  Apparently she just wanted copper.  Hadn't realized they were that picky with artifact creation.
