So I guess we can confirm that invisible contaminants are left behind by breath weapons, at the very least. I believe the one I dealt with was venom, which I hear is one of the tamer ones. From .16 on, contaminants are not supposed to track, so it'd be problematic if the invisible ones are still being spread around the fort (unless you were using an earlier version?).

As far as surgery goes, I'd highly recommend not putting tables in your hospital - it gives them the opportunity to decide against treatment when being placed on it, and without them dwarves will still perform surgery right on the bed.

You know what, it did happen in either 12 or 14, so disregard everything I said then. Silly me.

Contributing anecdotal evidence for the benefit of mandwarfkind!

Invisible contaminants from breath attacks are not counterable I don't think. I at least had no success with trying to wash them away or using dfcleanmap. I had zero success treating the rot in hospitals as well. Since rotting feet are in most cases insufficient to render a dwarf unconscious, the patient stands up and walks away as soon as he's placed on the table for surgery. I tried sedating said patients through judicious use of unfortunate nonfatal accidents, but none of the subjects survived in the end.

It may have been just this one particular kind of syndrome however.

edit: the deadly rotplague was spreading exclusively through tracking of said invisible contaminants all over the goddamn map. The fb breathed randomly several times without hitting anyone as my marksdorfs were using it for target practice through ceiling holes. I then dropped a portion of the ceiling on it, as it was composed of amber and refused to die to bolts.

Hi! So one of my most veteran and decorated dwarves(by virtue of her neckbreaking running speed relative to everyhting else) has adopted a rather peculiar fightings style when I upgraded my 16 fort to 18. She's been missing her right hand for a while(once again a result of her running at double the speed of the rest of my military), but wasn't anything out of the ordinary in 16, holding both her hammer and shield with her left hand. She'd charge, smash body parts with her hammer, get it embedded, twist it around(...yeah), dish up an occasional shield bash, the works.

Something snapped in that hyperactive little head of hers however when I switched to the new version. Now she charges the target, bites it and latches on firmly, and then goes absolutely batshit insane and starts randomly kicking, punching, shield bashing, hammering and shaking the poor sod around by whatever body part she latched on to. It's about as effective, but somewhat slower than more orthodox fighting styles. It's however rather amusing/disturbing to try and imagine. None of my other dwarves are doing this, and the only thing setting her apart is her missing right hand and insane speed.

What do you guys think of this? Has anyone else seen this behavior? Should I conscript some more cripples into the military and see if they too go completely berserk in combat?

Hi! I've been considering damming a river at my current fort to delay fps death for another year or two. I read the damming article on magmawiki so the technicalities of doing that are all resolved.

However, I was wondering if there are any repercussions to damming a river. My embark does not have a waterfall, but will I somehow cause an epic flood somewhere else on the world map if I dam it? Are there any other downsides to damming a river that the article might have omitted?

So I was dealing with a FB in my caverns that's been down there for a while (namely tunneling over it and punching holes in the ceiling to use as target practice for my marksdwarves), when I got a message that a Giantess of some description has arrived. I looked at it milling about at the map edge for about twenty seconds, but as it wasn't going anywhere I just sort of let it be and went back to overseeing the FB target practice project and later to try and figure out why my marksdorfs were just standing there(out of bolts apparently).

Then I get a message that Ral Idolfikod(whatever), Speardorf has become a Spearmaster. I zoom over to him and find him by the giantess at the end of a screen-long trail of blood. I open the reports with HASTY and apparently the giantess charged the lone speardorf who I can only assume was out to refill his waterskin or something. Unfazed, the hero dorf dodged it, stabbed BOTH the giantess's eyes out with his next two blows and then proceeded to stab the SHIT out of her with his +bronze spear+ for a dozen more pages as the poor thing was trying to crawl back to the map edge away from the devil dorf.

The anticlimax is in that he(and a third of the fort) died from foot rot induced by invisible fb contaminants a season later.

Hi! I had a bit of a run-in with troll dwarf physics in my latest fort.

It has a river which freezes in winter, so I decided it might be a good idea to have an underground cistern for winter months, as underground water does not freeze. To that end I channeled into the river ice, dug into the bank for a couple of tiles and then carved three z-levels of stairs straight down into a cistern. So far so good. Sort of.

Physics is not really my strong point, in fact I find most laws of nature absurd and arbitrary. I was however aware of the law of communicating vessels, but was hopeful that df does not adhere to it. As such I was fully prepared to savescum accordingly if my cistern (which was 3 z-levels below the river) was to overflow in the spring.

Spring arrived, the water melted and started pouring into my cistern, filling it completely but not at all overflowing. I sighed in relief and proceeded to install wells over the holes I punched over the top of it. Good stuff.

The following late winter I was staring idly at my masons cranking out yet another set of cabinets and other furniture in the workshop room adjacent to the well room when I got a freeze spike indicative of the coming of the spring and the unfreezing of the river. I then saw the fishing holes(I was able to fish out of the cistern during the winter, ayup) spouting water all over the place. However, since my masons and the workshop stone stockpile were so close I managed to wall off the well hall near instantaneously and prevent the flood.

So... How do communcating vessels behave in DF? Why did my cistern not overflow during the first spring? I'm mostly sure I punched the holes in the top of the cistern BEFORE it was filled with water, but am not completely sure. I guess if I did punch holes in it AFTER the filling then DF doesn't do flow computations after the flow of water stops and that's the reason I got a free year of wonky physics, but if not I am at a loss frankly.

But at any rate, what would be the best way to get rid of the excess water inside my fort? Should I just build a pump stack during the next winter and pump the water out? Should I flood the waterlogged chamber with magma somehow?

A FB that has either poisonous breath or deadly dust leaves behind invisible contaminants every time it uses its breath/dust attack. Even if it gets just a single one off, your dwarves will very soon track it all over the fort, leaving all barefoot dwarves and pets with rotting lower extremities.

I don't think even quarantine will work, as you won't be able to tell if the quarantined dwarves tracked the substance with them, haven't checked if the contaminants are purged by magma/flooding, if not then the only way to be completely rid of the nastyrot is to lock all your curent dwarves underground, forbid EVERYTHING and then dig out a completely separate fort with immigrants that have just arrived and haven't been anywhere near it. That worked for me.

Hi!

So probably an ingame year ago I was attacked by a forgotten beast composed of amber that breathed corrosive vapor. I saved and tried a number of approaches that all resulted in dwarves melting alive and my fps dropping to a fraction of a frame due to all the miasma. Eventually I floored my main staircase over, dug over the beast and punched holes in the ceiling over it. Then I used it as target practice for my marksdwarves , getting a couple of them to elite levels before running out of bolts.

The beast did not die, despite having its entire body red, so I collapsed what remained of the target practice ceiling on top of it, getting rid of it for good. I was SUPER proud of myself for having zero losses, getting a lot of mileage out of the beast and executing it in a suitably dwarfly fashion. Until...

About a week from that I noticed billowing clouds of miasma all over my fort. Half my animal population(all the puppies and kittens pretty much), third of my military and a few civilian dorfs had their lower extremities rotting off. I put in an order for thirty coffins and steeled myself. This has gradually slowed down over the next year, but the death toll is still in the dozens and I still have ten or so beings walking around rotting alive and stinking up my fort. I even had a moderate tantrum spiral due to numerous pets, friends and loved ones dying.

So... What's up with that? I first thought the beast's corpse was toxic somehow, so I moved my refuse stockpile away from it, but it has long rotted away and four of the dwarves who had just arrived as migrants already have their feet decomposing.

How do I put a stop to that? It's getting a little old.
