I have just finished Habibi, by Craig Thomson. It's a gorgeous comic book, with very pretty drawings all along and a very captivating story, even if it's emotionally difficult to read it sometimes. It's like a realistic documentary in a fairy tale universe. I really liked it.

France :

We're probably going to be fine. We already produce a lot of food, our cities aren't really car-dependent, and if we ever need something else, well there's the rest of Europe around us, and we can just walk there.

The biggest if is always energy. I don't know what resources France and its immediate neighbors have (we can always just settle in now-desert Germany for coal or something). I know we use a lot of nuclear for electricity, but I don't know how much reserves we have. But we probably have enough to send people to Niger or wherever nuclear-related ore is so we can start digging again.

General Discussion / Re: Voter ID required: do you support this?
« on: September 22, 2012, 02:05:46 pm »
Don't support it. I mean, is there even a serious problem, like voting fraud, that this kind of law would address ? I'm pretty sure that no, or that I would have heard about it in the news if it was the case.

It's not needed, I don't remember anyone asking for it, it would make voting more annoying than it is now. At best, this is a complete waste of time and resources, that could be spent elsewhere.

So, no.

Yeah, same here. Your teacher seems to be an idiot. Condescending her seems like a good idea. Pity that poor idiot, she might take the hint :p

Other than that ... I actually lived in semi-rural Georgia for six months or so (something like 40 minutes away from Augusta, in the middle of nowhere).

I knew very little about that place before, and I was surprised at how nice people were - I expected them to be much more aggressive against strangers and people who don't think like them. I don't know how much they knew about me though.

Their accent was unintelligible half of the time though (and so was mine for them, french accent, yay ! - we spent half of our discussions saying "what?") - that preconception was true :p

I kinda expected most people I met to be strongly republican, and they were. Most people I met had little college education too. But that may simply be because I met a certain kind of social class during my stay there, and not representative of georgians in general.

Oh, the other thing that surprised me was to learn that many (though not all) people at work have lived in lots of different places. I thought southern people tended to stay in the south for all of their lives, but no.

All in all, the whole experience was very fun and full of very weird surprises.

Anyone not in the Eurozone, then? :J

Yeah basically. Barbarians at the gate !

It kind of depends on the country's history too, I think. Here in France it's mostly the arab maghrebin immigrants, and it's other ethnic groups in, say, the UK, or Germany.

My father's family has been american for a century or so, but we don't know exactly where they come from - current legend says that a czech immigrant with a lithuanian name came in the US and was sheltered by a russian person. Or something along those lines. My last name is of lithuanian origin, apparently, and that's all I know for sure. I must have some french ancestry there too, since all of my father's family is bilingual.

My mother's family is a proud lineage of military officers from the Savoie region. My great grandfather hijacked a german plane and flew to Algeria during world war II :D We still have the newspaper narrating the tale somewhere.

General Discussion / Re: Thoughts on a potential Chinese revolution.

So, the question I had, is Taiwan. If China do collapse in a way, does Taiwan have any chance of restoring order or something ? After all, if I remember well, Taiwan is officially claiming all of China as its territory. Basically how would Taiwan be affected by a chinese revolution, and does it have any chance of doing something interesting in it.

Certificates for free. I have no clue what they do, but I know that, at the very least, they will look nice on your resume. So I'd say go for it too.
