DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: March 22, 2011, 11:19:28 am »
I finally opened the caverns ... at level -50. Turns out I dug one stone square next to it for about twenty levels while trying to find it. Ugh. Well at least I have cavern floor at level -50 and I can now search for water ... I hope I won't find the magma sea before that !

A clever way to cover the entire map with logs and then set them on fire when the elven caravan arrives ?

Life Advice / Re: Androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness)
« on: March 21, 2011, 01:32:51 am »
Partially bald is not a look you can make work.

Truly depends. Many of the partially bald people I've seen looked like they had difficulties to accept they were going bald, so they tried to hide it, or work around it, and no matter what they did, it looked ugly. But a few of them just accepted it, kept their hair clean and short, and it was fine really. You just can't do much when you're partially bald that's all.

Life Advice / Re: Who uses bell alarm clocks?
« on: March 20, 2011, 04:10:54 pm »
Heh I'm unlucky enough to wake up instantly when my alarm rings. So I just have a little thing that also works as a radio and I don't need more.

I wake up routinely at 4 am though, and I can slumber for 20 minutes before going up (working 10 hours a day and not being able to go to sleep early because of my family means every minute I can scratch on my 6hours night is great). But if my alarm clock is not on I can't sleep well and I routinely wake up in the middle of the night in fear of being late. That's weird.

Ok, suggestion : move the "NOTE : requires microsoft framework" line on top, or right under, the DOWNLOAD V8.5 with DF 0.31.21 line. It's currently sandwiched between the line saying "new graphical user interface !!! " and it's illustration, which might be why I missed it.

Overall that post looks fine really. It's actually quite clean and joyful. You're doing a pretty good job with the LazyNewbPack, and it helped me a lot !

"Lazy New Pack.exe - Application Error

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135)."

I'm pretty sure that means you need to install the .NET framework.

Hehe, thank you. I still can't launch the LazyNewbPack, but it changed the error message. I guess that means I have to learn what the heck does a framework do, and how to find a version of the runtime or something. Well, LazyNewb will makes me ActiveVet the hard way I guess ! :D
You need to have .NET framework 3.5 installed, not 4.0 (though it never hurts.. :D)

If it isn't already, Lucas, can you put it on the front page?

YAY ! I made it ! Thank you for everyone's help !

It's actually in the front page, in pretty big letters, but there's so much stuff on the front page, I just overlooked that one.

General Discussion / Re: Alternative energy sources
« on: March 14, 2011, 03:14:33 pm »
I kinda agree with MetalSlimeHunt.

I think we need to move on toward a source of renewable energy, because let's be honest, fossile energy only last so long, and we're eating reserves faster than they replenish, which is never a good plan for the future. I don't know more to comment any further though.

Now coolant systems are failing at a second nuclear power plant, also near Fukushima. A 10km radius around each plant is being evacuated.

Let's hope nuclear reactor failures won't turn into a chain reaction. The quake and the tsunami were impressive but not as much as that kind of news ; I really hope they haven't damaged the nuclear plants too much, that would really be  disaster.

I guess I should go learn more about nuclear plants and safety measures and stuff.
