DF Gameplay Questions / Re: On Subterreanean Versus Above Ground Tiles
« on: November 02, 2010, 12:13:30 pm »
I'm not sure I phrased my question clearly enough.

Basically, I'm not seeking to change the status of an existing solid tile.
I'm seeking to create a brand new tile of stone whose status is subterranean.

Hence I'm interesting in finding out how DF figures out whether or not a tile is above ground or subterranean.
Light/Dark, Inside/Outside; these things don't affect subterranean-ness I don't think.
At least not outside of the 4 possible configurations of these tags.

To put it bluntly, I'm interesting in using magma and water to CREATE Inside Dark Subterranean tiles of Obsidian that are actually at least one z-level off the ground. Is this possible?

DF Gameplay Questions / On Subterreanean Versus Above Ground Tiles
« on: November 02, 2010, 11:38:11 am »
Just a question; while I realize this topic is heavily talked about, I've got a somewhat odd question.

I realize that it is impossible to render currently existing above ground tiles subterranean.
However, I'm curious about how Dwarf Fortress determines whether or not a tile is above ground or subterranean.

The answer to this question helps answer my actual question, i.e. the weird one.
Is it possible to create subterranean tiles?

I believe that the solution, if it exists, involves the creation of multiple z-level towers of obsidian to generate tiles marked *Inside, Dark, Subterranean*.

DF Modding / TextEditor

Just curious what anyone thought about any plain text editors for editing the Dwarf Fortress Raws.
I just think Notepad isn't good enough.

Yeah...definitely still a no go.

Still not seeing where I messed up either.

DF Modding / Re: 0.31. MODDERS WORKSHOP (NEWCOMERS WELCOME!)

I'm having some rather strange troubles with a custom workshop and its related reaction.

As a practice exercise I decided to put together a custom workshop of dimensions 1x1 that had a single training reaction.

I wrote up the raws for the workshop, the reaction, and altered the entity_default.txt file appropriately.
However I've had absolutely no success getting DF to display the reaction in the workshop menu at all. The reaction doesn't show up in the job manager screen either (in distinct contrast with Shukaro's troubles from July).

Here are the Raws I created:

building_desk.txt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

reaction_desk.txt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Added these to the entity_default.txt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've been through several world regens attempting to get this to work and nothing has shown up.
I also added in Shaostoul's Training buildings he provided on the wiki.
His buildings and reactions worked perfectly.

Needless to say, I'm greatly confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok made the change.

[REAGENT:A:1:BOULDER:NONE:NONE:NONE]

Still a no go. The reaction refuses to show.

No go. Adding a reagent did nothing.
Though I may have added the reagent incorrectly:

[REAGENT:A:1:STONE:NONE:NONE:NONE]

Also, I'm not sure what a lack of a reagant should do considering that Shaostoul's Training Reactions have no reagant either.

DF Modding / New to Modding and Custom Workshops
« on: October 16, 2010, 01:10:15 pm »
Hi, I just recently started seriously modding DF, but have been tinkering back and forth with the Raws for several months now.
I decided to try and see if I could make a custom workshop, and sort of slapped a small test one together named desk.

However, as far as I can tell something strange is happening. I've successfully migrated in my desk, however the single reaction I've written out for it fails to show. I haven't the slightest clue why.
The raws I've written are:

building_desk.txt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

reaction_desk.txt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Added to entity_default.txt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've done my homework, flipped through Shaostoul's guide (both), done several world regens (upwards of 8 now I think; 5 of them on 31.12, 3 of them on 31.16), and wandered around scratching my head for a bit.
I also migrated in Shaostoul's cheat-training booths available on the wiki for comparison. Everything worked perfectly.
I'm sure we differ somewhere, but I haven't the slightest clue where. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
