I checked Steve's posts, just in case he'd posted a full ARR, but (from what I could find) it seemed pretty spotty - mostly just initial reports before he lost interest/updated the code. I suppose that I could possibly provide such a service; although it would be directly conflicting with my innate laziness and the fact that my day job doesn't usually give me the time to type up what's going on in my empire.

The Steel Federation had been conducting a string of successful campaigns - a small Precursor fleet outpost was wiped out with only minimal losses; a nest of Rakhas was wiped out in ground combat; and a primitive alien race with over a billion members was pacified and brought under colonial rule.

The technology of energy shields had recently been improved to the point that it was deemed ready for installation on the warships of the fleet - no longer would they be tanking damage directly with their armored hulls; instead a regenerating 85-point shield would deflect all but the most severe blows.

Thus, when a new Precursor base was discovered at 40 Eridani, the fleet was dispatched to great fanfare. Who were these soulless machines, that would think to deny the supremacy of the Human race?

During the approach to the planet that the Precursors had claimed, higher-than-expected resistance was encountered. Dozens of missiles were being fired in five minute intervals. The fleet's point defense systems engaged, but the Precursor missiles were devilishly devious, operating at high speed with multiple decoys. Nuclear flames rippled over the fleet; but the new shields proved true, and armor damage was minimal.

The Precursor base was nearly within range of the fleets large-bore laser weapons when they changed tactics - instead of the dozens of large anti-ship missiles every couple of minutes; they instead opened up with hundreds of tiny missiles every five seconds. Although each of the diminutive warheads inflicted negligible damage, there were so many that they overwhelmed shields, then sandpapered the hulls of targeted ships, digging to the vital systems below. Within 30 seconds, three fleet warships had exploded. An order to retreat was given; but before they finally managed to escape out of the range of the deadly stream of fire, three more ships had been blown to pieces.

The remaining fleet limped back to Sol, where they would be repaired. The great shipyards sprang to life, laying down the hulls of a dozen new vessels. The fleet would be back, stronger and more technologically advanced.

Other Games / Balatro - Poker 2.0
« on: March 06, 2024, 12:26:48 pm »
What happens when you combine poker with a deckbuilder roguelike? Balatro.

You start off with a typical 52 card playing card deck. Using jokers (cards that change the scoring of various cards/hands), planet cards (increase the base value of hands), tarots (variety of effects, but mostly dealing with changing characteristics of your individual cards), spectral cards (basically superpowered tarots), and booster packs (has a high chance of containing cards that have already been upgraded), you attempt to get through 8 rounds.

Each round has three "opponents" - Small Blind, Large Blind, and Boss Blind. Blinds start as low as 300 chips (for the round 1 small blind) to 300,000 chips (for the round 8 boss with the special 'extra high blind'.) After you beat the round 8 boss, you're allowed to free play against blinds that increase astronomically - there's an achievement and unlockable joker behind the round 13 boss.

That's about it - the game is all about finding broken combinations of jokers and cards; using planets to improve the payoffs of your most-played hands. Certain jokers are unlocked by fufilling conditions - like having 5 'glass' cards in your deck, or winning a game without ever playing a flush, etc.

Different starting scenarios are given by different deck colors - for instance, the Red deck starts with an extra discard every round, while Yellow starts with an extra $10.

It's well put together, and offers a surprising amount of gameplay. I've managed to beat the lowest difficulty level (white stakes) with most of the decks, and the second level (red stakes) with the Green deck (which gains extra cash for left over plays/discards, but doesn't earn interest like the other decks do.)

Witnessed some shit:

Wandering around the Cannibal lands, I come across one of their villages. On one side, they're fighting Screaming Bandits, on the other, there's two spider bots just absolutely going to town, flinging corpses into the air. The town looked like a kicked anthill - giant waves of both the skinny little cannibals and the larger, better armed cannibals just going nuts fighting both threats. I stayed long enough to fill our backpacks with the cleavers that both the bandits and cannibals use, then nope'd out of there.

Further south, we saw a giant red stain on the terrain. Went to check it out - it appears that a large group of Cannibals had run into Beak Things, and not done well. Torn limbs everywhere. The beak things that had done it were still nibbling on the corpses, but my party was able to handle them well enough.

So yeah, turns out armor is good. Bodypaint will not save you against the cold iron embrace of the machines, nor the ripping claws of animals.

Edit: Since triple-posting would be crass, I'll just add on here.

Had an epic fight where about two dozen or so Starving Bandits ran into a camp of about a dozen Dust Bandits, and I was able to goad a Holy Nation High Paladin patrol into joining in the fun. Near the end, a group of wild buffalos charged in and started goring random fighters - I'm not even sure how that happened. My group mostly stayed in the outskirts, firing crossbows into the fray, taking down anyone that leaked from the main melee. Not surprisingly, it ended with my team against the High Paladin and three normal Paladins, but they were at least slowed down by the previous fighting, and we managed to put them down without too much trouble.... well, except for poor Cat.

We rescued Cat out of a holding cell in the Dust Bandit's Tower. An old man with fairly cruddy stats, he'd been slowly training up and getting stronger... until our fight against a giant raptor we found guarding a nest of valuables on Raptor Island, when one of his arms was bitten off. Cat was a trooper and continued on, using one-handed weapons, as we looped around back towards our base, where it just so happened that we had an Ancient Empire tech arm that we could fit him with.

Anyway, long story short, one of the Paladins' giant longswords cleaved off one of Cat's legs; poor guy just can't catch a break. We carried him back to base and fitted him with the arm, but he's currently useless without a leg. He's been left at base, and a new expedition has been planned - to travel over to the North East portion of the map - where I've never been - but I hear that there are high quality robotic limbs avilable (no Hiver junk for my man Cat!)

Heart Protectors for the Armour piece, I gather?
You'd think so! Surprisingly, just the one - for some reason, Heart Protectors refuse to drop at higher than shoddy. Enough standard-level shoes and skirts that I sell them off, but no torso armor.

Instead, we're wearing almost entirely store-bought armor. White Plate Jackets and Drifter's Leather Jackets, mostly. Ninja Rags for the crossbow users. The only stolen torso armor I have are some Armoured Rags (colored), which I'm pretty sure I got off a Berserker; and a Mercenary Leather Armour, which I believe came from some Slavers.

Edit: It doesn't help that a goodly amount of torso armor is branded for a faction. I had some very nice blue leather armor - standard or high-grade, that was slaver-branded. Figured that even if I pissed off some slavers, that probably wouldn't be such a big deal.... yeah - it turns out that the southern cities are very closely tied with slavers, such that their gate guards will attack you on sight for 'impersonating' slavers.

For most of my team, it's a Standard-grade Spiked Helmet (taken off Dust Bandits), with High-grade Armoured Rag Skirts (also taken off Dust Bandits), with either homemade Standard-grade Drifter's Boots or high-grade Samurai Boots (Dust Bandits, again).

Most of us either have Rusty Chainmail (from ruins) or Leather Shirts or Vests, which is mostly store-bought, although I've apparently got a couple which are stolen, although I don't remember who I grabbed them from. (Mostly Standard-grade, although a couple High or Shoddy)

I stopped by the Armor King, so my first character is now equipped in Masterwork Grade stuff, but we didn't have even remotely enough cash to equip the rest of the party that way.

I'm slowly moving up the power ladder - after a brief but memorable trip from The Grid - where a map had pointed us to loot - along The Crater - where the Beak Things scared us away - down to The Hook to check out the slaver cities; then finally around to the High Bonefields, where we learned that bonedogs can come in both much larger sizes as well as much larger packs; we limped our way up through The Swamp to the Border Zone, back to our home base.

We caught a bit of luck when a wandering assassin happened to pass by where our party was crashed on sleeping mats, trying to heal up. We scooped up all the unconscious and/or severely limping members and tagged along behind him. With his help, we fended off two groups of the swamp spiders, before he led us to a small town in the southern portion of the Swamp.

Actually ended up buying a house there, since they didn't have a bar to sleep in. Healed up, and finally got back home and dropped off all the research loot I'd picked up.

Decided to take on a tower I'd passed by earlier. Turned out to belong to the Dust King. I noticed that the man himself was standing outside the tower, so tried to pull him without pulling aggro from everyone. That failed, but it turned out that my party is (finally!) well enough trained that a dozen or so well-equipped Dust Bandits are no longer a major worry. We took them all out, stripped them (and the tower) of anything valuable, and turned in the King for a sweet 35,000 cats.

Managed to upgrade my parties average armor level from Shoddy/Standard to something closer to Standard/High. Feels good.

I've got to say, this game has some of the most amazing emergent gameplay I've run across.

My group (now ten strong) was walking along an acid-filled river, when we spotted some ancient ruins. Problem: they were absolutely swarming with the little Swamp spiders. While trying to figure out how to approach the problem (several reloads later), the problem solved itself when a pack of beak things wandered into the village.

The spiders attacked the beak things, and gave a pretty good account of themselves. I attacked the (now weakened) beak things, as well as any spiders that managed to pick themselves back up. We looted the ruins, netting some decent gear, as well as some tools, which let us start cracking the door on the final building - a lost library. Sadly, the act of cracking the door is apparently fairly loud, and so we were beset by several gorilloids in quick succession. When the door was finally cracked open, we scooted inside, then closed the door behind us - and not a moment too soon, since another beak thing had come in to feast on all the corpses.

Two free games this week:

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! - a visual novel with a twist. Absolutely do not spoil yourself going in. I've previously played through the non-Plus! version (which is free-to-play on Steam) and really enjoyed my time with it. Apparently Plus! adds new music and some additional side stories.

Lost Castle - "action RPG beat'em up with roguelike elements and randomized dungeons for up to four players online and local!" Says the page; can't say I've heard of it before.

I only got as far as discovering about 1/3rd of the items - things were starting to take too long to create and it was getting late - but it was an interesting time... well, it was after I figured out that my adblocker was causing the game to not load (it played the intro and started the main game window, but time never advanced and I had no actions available.)

One thing that was weird - even by the game's standards - was that I ended up with an extra river, so I disassembled it. Doing so somehow ended up getting me a couple fish, frogs, a crystal, and, of all things, a bike (that produces blood) - all things far beyond my character's current understanding. Just... what?

I've got to say, this game is really sucking me in.

We had a really lucky break a while back when a trader caravan ran into both a Berserker and a Kral's Chosen force simultaneously. Most of them managed to get out, but one of their pack animals died, and I was able to loot it for almost 30,000 worth of skeleton repair kits, as well as enough high-quality food that I didn't have to worry about feeding my squad for many hours of playtime.

We're now up to 9 members in our band, with a home base out of one of the ruined houses in Squin (a fairly traditional choice, if my Google searches are any indication.) We managed to capture the 10,000 bounty south of Waystation, and actually killed all the bandits there, so we can use their beds to recharge and their training dummies to get up to level 15 combat for my new recruits. I'm reading conflicting things regarding respawning, but for now, the place seems devoid of life, even after travelling away from it for multiple days.

Travelled down to the Swamp. Learned to hate the little spider things that do 100 damage. Learned to hate the Swamp Ninjas.

Travelled to the Spider Plains. Learned why it's called that. Had an exciting time when I ran into a group of Berserkers... who ran into Spiders... who ran into Kral's Chosen... who ran into a Wandering Assassin... who ran into EVEN MORE spiders. Had to actually reload from that one, since the spiders won, and started eating everyone.

I think one of the saddest moments I've had so far was after watching a roaming band of berserkers run in and trash the local starving bandit hideout.

The Berserkers knock down everyone, patch themselves up, then continue on their way. I sneak into the outskirts of camp, and loot one of the bodies - but he's just playing dead, and rouses himself after I snatch his sword. My character proceeded to spend nearly a minute fighting this unarmed, badly hurt, starving bandit before I finally managed to get a couple of good hits in to knock them back down. Ended up hurt enough that it was too risky to try and take on any of the other bandits (who were slowly limping around and bandaging themselves up by this time.)

It's tough getting those first combat points.

I noticed that the game was on sale, so decided to finally pick it up. I assume that my experiences are fairly typical - mining chunks of iron and copper, stripping the dead from any fights between factions for equipment to equip and/or sell.

Finally got up to 3,000 credits, netting me a second character. Just for fun, I decided to lure a guard from a bandit camp that’s near the outpost I’m operating from. I figured - “hey, two on one; how bad can this be?”

Bad. The answer is bad. It turns out that two dudes who barely know which end of the sword is supposed to be pointing at the enemy aren’t able to even scratch a competent opponent before he slashes them both to death.

If there's still time to join up, I'd be willing to put in some hours.

That said, I'm stuck at work for a while yet - is it even possible to add me to the team in time? Player name is AlStar on the Crawl servers as well.

The latest bane to my empire is the new missile mechanics.

The Precursor force that guards a system I want fires 30 size 8 missiles at me every 5 minutes. These missiles fly at 30,000 km/s, and they've got some ungodly number of decoys.

I've been steadily improving my tech, but even my latest ships, which have a ~20% hit chance (much improved from gen 1's ~7%), with dozens of lasers firing, I'm averaging 6 missiles slamming into my ships per volley.

Currently, it appears that my strategy is to run them out of missiles by burning my armor, crew, officers, and ships. I would not recommend this strategy, generally speaking.
