DF General Discussion / Iron
« on: August 17, 2006, 12:38:00 am »
edit: I'm an idiot, just scroll down to the second question.

Iron doesn't seem to work like it's supposed to.

Looking around the forums, and I found this little snippet of wisdom from Toady:

quote:
There's also a steel making process, using limestone, coal and iron ore to make pig iron, and then again to make steel.

Now, I tried this, and it doesn't seem to work.

Trying to make pig iron, I get an error:  <name> cancels Make pig iron Bars: Needs Iron bars.

That doesn't sound right.

So I tried to make iron bars directly: my little guy carried a hematite and a charcoal to the smelter, and *poof* out comes iron bars.

This is obviously easier than the method that was described by Toady, but I'm wondering if it's a bug, or a stopgap or whatever. Just figured I'd point it out.

Oh, unrelated question - I noticed that you can mint bronze and tin coins, is there any reason to do so? I'd test it myself, but ever since I moved to an economy, my metalsmith has been too busy stamping out copper and silver coins to waste time on something that might be worthless.

DF General Discussion / Game crashing when saving (game doesn't save)
« on: August 19, 2006, 08:54:00 pm »
This has now happened twice (but not in a row - after the first crash, I loaded the game, let it run a few minutes, then tried to save, just in case the game was bad or something, and it saved just fine.)

Let me try to think what factors were present in both.

- I had been playing for several hours since the last save *cry* (but this is not usually a problem)

- I had hit the lava lake.

- I exported a BMP of my fortress shortly before saving.

Hmm, that's about all I can think of. Nothing else stands out as being the same.
I can show you pictures of what my forts looked like just before the crash wiped them out, if you'd think that would help.

Let's see here, other possibly useful information - my errorlog.txt contains three entires, all of them reading:
DOUBLE TAGGED ITEM: Sleep

The last couple of lines of my gamelog are:
Some migrants have arrived.
Kol Tholkadol, Bookkeeper has mandated the construction of coins.
•nul M”rulfer, Broker has altered the prices of goods.
An animal has grown to become a Stray cat.
An animal has grown to become a Stray cat.
Stray cat (Tame) has adopted Šzum Astislolor, Peasant.
Erib Rakustƒst, Craftsdwarf cancels Collect Webs: Job item lost or destroyed.
Stray cat (Tame) has adopted Stodir Likotosor, Fisherdwarf.

Ask me if you need anything else, and I'll try to come up with it. Losing all my hard work (twice!) is horrible.

DF General Discussion / Where does iron ore usually show up?
« on: August 21, 2006, 03:45:00 am »
I'm just curious where the rest of you are finding it. I've just gotten into year three of this fortress (I know this because mushroom trees are finally starting to pop up) and I only just now found my first (and thus far, only) deposit of iron ore - and not for lack of searching, either.

I was getting rather worried, since I can't cross the lava river without it (or rather the steel you turn it into.) And, perhaps more importantly, I couldn't make any of the lava buildings (It's a very, very wood-poor place outside my front gates.)

Anyway, here's where I finally found it:

The location is marked with a (just barely visable in the thumbnail) red circle.

Luckly, there's a lot of it there, so it should last me for quite some time.
