Corpses don't go away, just bones and other small junk (although I wish bones stayed.) They will, however, eventually rot, at which point they become unbutcherable, and you'll just have to wait for them to rot all the way so you can bones and a skull (I just recently noticed that you can make the skulls into totems) out of them.

edit: animal pile is, I'm pretty sure, for animals you have captured and put into cages. Refuse is where all kills get sent to.

Once you start up an economy, nobles (and possibly peasants, although I'm not certain) will start picking up stuff they like on their own.

Before my big fort went critical (stupid 6 nobles all moving in at once then going insane) I had one noble who liked rings. His room ended up cluttered with about a dozen different rings in it. Other nobles did similar with stuff they liked.

I seem to remember that Toady mentioned that pre-economy dwarves used to pick up any crafts they happened to like from the bins, but one of the patches broke it.

Have you tried updating all your graphics drivers since the reinstall?
They can cause problems like this.

Edit: wouldn't kill you to get another 512 RAM either, but I doubt that's your problem (since it wasn't one before.)

This object menaces with spikes of plump helmet.

- gotten from the description of my latest artifact, a plump helmet coat.

I'm going to be sad when I run out of plump helmet cloth, it makes the most amusing artifacts.

Are you using a custom tileset? That's the kind of thing that I normally see on pictures that have been resized with something other than a pixel resize method, causing the 255,255,255 transparent pink to get 'polluted' with the grey from the tile.

Just my thoughts...

Going from left to right:
1. it looks like your refuse pile is filled to capacity, you should make it larger, so things don't start rotting.

2. As far as I can tell, this room has a bunch of wells in it. This is good. It also has doors only on one side of it, and that side is opposite the side that has your housing. This is bad. I'd recommend cutting out this gem (possibly getting the gem in the process) and putting in a door.

3. Dwarves don't like sharing tables. If you get a chance, you should probably make the single row of tables into a double row.

My other couple comments are that
1) it looks like you've got your craftsdwarf station pretty far inside your fort. This might be fine, but I like placing them close to the entrance, so that they can easily get bones and shells from the refuse pile (disregard this if you're making crafts from other things)
and
2) Your main hallway starts out 3 wide (this is good) but then rapidly shrinks to 1 wide (this is bad.) 1-wide hallways cause dwarves to have to squeeze past one another (and pets too, if you've got the normal army of pets milling around) going very slowly. I'd reccommend making all main corridors at least 2 wide.

I think it would take more wood to make a bin out of metal than out of wood.

Not if you use lava smelters and metalshops to make them. With lava, suddenly making anything out of metal becomes feasible (although still more time consuming than out of stone or wood, since you have to smelt the ore first.)

Also, what the hell is that huge pool of red on the map, outside and to the north of your fort?!

You know, I was wondering that myself, so I sat and watched it for a while. Turns out it's a swamp where the cats in my fortress go when they're board to kill vermin and dragonflies. That pool of red is apperently the end result of dozens of cats all deciding to do the same thing over the course of the last three years.

My search pattern is fairly loose because I was counting on the fact that most ore veins tend to be both a - large, and b - spread out over a pretty sizable area. (The iron patch I finally found is both these things, it's just about a dozen screens further north then I was looking)

Just for kicks (since I've now found some,) I'll probably try looking north and south in the area before the river. I'll be sorta pissed if I find out all those miles of tunnels could've been avoided by just searching a little further in the early part of the mountain.

I'm just curious where the rest of you are finding it. I've just gotten into year three of this fortress (I know this because mushroom trees are finally starting to pop up) and I only just now found my first (and thus far, only) deposit of iron ore - and not for lack of searching, either.

I was getting rather worried, since I can't cross the lava river without it (or rather the steel you turn it into.) And, perhaps more importantly, I couldn't make any of the lava buildings (It's a very, very wood-poor place outside my front gates.)

Anyway, here's where I finally found it:

The location is marked with a (just barely visable in the thumbnail) red circle.

Luckly, there's a lot of it there, so it should last me for quite some time.

Once you get the ... broker ... I'm pretty sure it is - one of the early nobles - there will be a representitive with the caravan. He'll ask you what you want, and you can up the price of seeds, and they'll bring them next year.

Alternatively, you can pick all the shrubs (") that grow outside and along the banks of the cave river. The ones outside are almost always useless (except for brewing) but the ones inside usually yield something plantable.

DF General Discussion / Re: When have you had absolutely insane luck?
« on: August 30, 2006, 03:11:00 pm »
Well, in my most recent game, I found coal. Like lots of it. An entire vein, with 20 or 30 units of coal. And at the very tip of the end of the coal vein, I found iron ore.

This marks the first game I've ever found more than 5 coal in one place, and it marks the first time I havn't had to go four or five screens north to find iron.

That, in my opinion, is insane luck.
