Other Games / Re: Cube World
« on: July 10, 2013, 01:46:06 pm »
A dangerous stunt- I know more than a few personality types that would just check the nearest torrent if they couldn't buy it. Only being open half an hour a day would be terrible for this kind of business.

*Cough*

The game is decent, that said, but I'd imagine that it's more interesting in multiplayer. Overall it's not very deep though, it's just a procedural world with monsters/dungeons of various levels and according gear drops, with a dash of crafting and a couple gimmicks like pets and hang gliders. It's not very different in essence from "3079" (but more polished, and with a different setting - fantasy).

(Ok maybe i'm too hard on it, it certainly has potential for more and IS fun even now)

Well, I just made a decent sized ring shaped ship. I'd upload pics, but I can't figure out where screenshots save. Anyway, I may upload it to the catalog and try out the server (I haven't tried multiplayer yet, because this is the first decent ship I've made.)

From my own explorations, the game keeps a number of files within "C:\Windows\System32\Starmade" For whatever reason that is. I believe screenshots are amongst those.

I found mine in the game's install directory. Maybe that directory in s32 is for the backup it claims to make while updating?

No, the backups are zip archives in the Starmade folder (where the screenshots can also be found as .png). You can also use the printscreen key, or shift+printscreen and paste it into paint, then save it wherever you want as a .jpg.

Something I'd like to share with all the large ship enthusiasts : you can use Cheat Engine to increase the advanced building box size.
That's brilliant.

I have nothing to add, that's just brilliant.

Something useful as well when doing this : you can still use the arrows to lower the value, but trying to increase it will reset it to 10.

To give you an idea on how useful this is : just adding wedge plating on my 150 block long triangular reactor means placing 450 10-block long lines per pair of reactors.  I have 3 pairs so that's 1350 clicks to add the wedge plating on all engines. But the thruster blocks also follow the triangular shape so they take about as many clicks to build, often even in the dark as I had to follow a line through the whole length of the engine, and in all my fiddling i had to remove (also click intensive) and replace them several times over. Instead of 450 clicks per engine I only need 30 clicks (90 total instead of 1350) if I can use a 150 long building block. And I don't need to follow lines in the dark like a madman.

Something I'd like to share with all the large ship enthusiasts : you can use Cheat Engine to increase the advanced building box size. It could save your fingers and sanity. I just wish I had thought about it sooner now, as I lost many hours in trial & error on my damn engines that are 150 block long and triangular in shape (not to mention that I rebuilt them from scratch at least once, they use hull wedges, and I can only use symmetry in 1 direction...).

1.8 million recharge

Is there a trick to it, or is it just from stacking large amounts of power modules once you hit the 1 million wall ? You might want to make a bigger solid block of power tanks, by the way, they scale crazy high.

Also, I read here that thrusters had a connection bonus and indeed it allowed me to go from 680k thrust to over 850k just from connecting the 6 previously separate thruster nacelles... I doubt howerver that they function the same as power modules, I couldn't get much thrust even from super long lines. I would be really interested in knowing the actual formula for thrust and energy consumption from thrusters.

After hours upon hours of work, here is the new improved version of the ship i'm working on :

Link

The only issue so far is that it requires colossal amounts of energy for propulsion, and with the cap on energy production, it's impossible to keep up. Energy storage still makes it possible to use thrusters, but only in bursts. It has very good acceleration for it's mass, though, so maybe I should remove some of the thrusters and pack some other things in the nacelles. At first the rear part was supposed to be the main thruster exhaust, but seeing how it has already more than enough propulsion, I changed it to serve as hangar bays. It actually looks pretty nice this way, I think.

Still, the amount of time required to build this is incredible, even something as trivial as making the black nozzle things for the nacelles took several hours, especially given how the symmetry isn't even in both axes so it was "only" building left and right together (that's a direct result of the changes I made to correct the oversized-head effect).

I still have a lot of work to do, but I find this part the most interesting, since now I have all this room to play with and decorate. The interior is still very rough but I'm starting to create rooms and basic subdivisions inside the ship.

Edit : nice ship, Julius ! I love the "Aquila". I think i'll do something similar on my ship, but blue and using some kind of viking runes to write "MJOLNIR".

If you have a ship made from 400 AMC's

No, I took advantage of a flaw in the way the game handles bonuses. I cannot destroy a faction module but I can shred the shields of large ship.

I call it Laser Busters.

According to the forums, this is a bug where if 2 shots hit shields in quick succession, the second one will completely ignore shields.

Making a ship with dimensions larger than 200m tends to cause problems. Especially if you pass 300. Double especially if someone else's ship gets near to ramming you. Triple especially if they're also flying a large ship.

Why so? Cant turn and you die? If you make a biiiiig ship, it usually has enough shields to not give a fuck about any damage from small/medium ships, and large ships are almost equally immobile as the biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig ship, so the one with better stats wins. Also if you make BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG ship you will have LOOOOOOOOOOOOOTSAAAA turrets. Or biiiiiiiiiiiiiig turrets.

No, he means that it will cause lag and assorted server issues.

I decided to alter the design a bit, i'll show you the result once i'm done, but it should solve the "oversized head" effect and give me twice the room for utilities such as power, propulsion and shields. Also, so far i'm pleasantly surprised by how maneuverable it is for it's size. After some fiddling, I found out that the 1 million power/sec is a soft limit but you can't circumvent it with more separate power plants. So power tanks are the way to go if you have the room, they scale very well with larger sizes.

As far as classification goes, mine depends on weaponry and armor too, but overall I go by size (well, length) and add "light" or "heavy" if it's significantly below or above :

Fighter : 6m
Corvette : 12m
Frigate : 25m
Destroyer : 50m
Cruiser : 250m
Battleship : 500m
Battlecruiser : 1km
Warship/Carrier : 2km
Supercruiser : 7km
Dreadnough : 20km

(These were the names I used on my high school drawings anyway...)

235
Hmm I might add side weapons to balance the design, then...

I'm not 100% happy with how I made the "hammerhead", but I guess it'll be enough for now, or I would have to do a lot more geometry and drawing, and i'm already doing too much of that.

My next project might be to make a 1:1 replica of the Asgard Bilskirnir from StarGate SG1. It's 1400m long by 640m wide (my current design is "only" 450m long by 376 wide).

That, or I might try to build more of the ships that I draw in high school -the "mjolnir heavy cruiser" is one of those. Well now that I think about it, since I had played Starcraft 1, the terran battlecruiser might have inspired me...

(Which by this game standards is a titan/calibri)

Where do you get those standards from ? I couldn't find a reference of "Calibri" class.

236
After many setbacks, I have finally finished the first draft of the Mjolnir heavy cruiser hull !

Spoiler: screens (click to show/hide)

This was made in solo play with cheated blocks, with the objective of importing and buying it in multiplayer ( I first tried to build it in multi - and actually did up to a point - but with all the lag and disconnects and rollbacks, I was losing a lot of time).

Now to the fun part : filling it with weapons, shields, reactors and all that stuff that make ships work (the current ones are placeholder).

237
Maybe it could be a bit further, like 15-25 or 20-30

I hope that I'm not going to lose my work in progress, the server went down as I was working on it and it doesn't seem to work when I save the design (last time I tried to buy it, it just went "nope, but thanks for the money").

238
The pvp rules are : only when mutually agreed.

By the way, Poltifar, I like the lighting inside your destroyer !

An interesting concept, even echoing with some of my own game ideas, I will probably buy it if it's good enough, but I don't pledge money on kickstarter.

I hope they add the ability to turn your character with e and q, so I don't have to be infinitely frustrated because my character doesn't fit in a 2x1 hallway because my ship is tilted :/

Build 2x1. It's efficient.
FTFY.

I can see what you're saying, tough, but I built this ship with 2x1 hallways (well, 1 hallway that size across the entire ship). It just makes sense to be able to turn in a space game.

Can't you do that with "C" ? I think that it works both in ships and on foot, it basically resets your orientation. Otherwise, you can use artificial gravity.

Edit : ok "C" doesn't work and neither does left ctrl + mouse... but gravity would still do the trick.
