So, basically, the dwarfs are double/triple-jumping?
What the hell.
Yeah, the dojo guy will love this.

And now, I'm feeling that my 15 days of fumbling and failing absolutely miserably, sprinkled with copious wiki browsing, was a lucky occurrence. Took me that long to start my first fortress that lasted many in-game years, survived many sieges, had its own (unreliable) water trap, and only ended in an abandon when I got bored of it. That was a bit more than a year ago.
To my credit (?), I haven't yet dabbled with truly dwarfy traps, never used any magma forge, and only managed to use magma long enough to start flooding the surface. So, in some way, I'm not decent enough yet.

By the way, I figured out the military.

Musashi has been struck down.

*ponders*
Can't say it's a bad idea. Nor that it is undwarfy.
Next update, I'll do it. And I'll give him a fancy title... now to find one. :D

And magma. It improves any situation.

IF you could mod in Dwarves being cage-storable, you could theoretically stick your excess population in a kind of "stasis".  Or load them all into a single cage and drop them down to the lowest point you can to kiss the surface goodbye all at once.
Stasis? Caged dwarfs still need to drink and eat. I know what I'm talking about, I've had a few victims over the forts.

Bit macabre, don't you think?  :o
What are you complaining about? This is Dwarf Fortress. In the subforum above, we're trying to rot soldiers' eyes out, having ghosts beat up their relatives, and slowly amputating megabeasts of their limbs, teeth, and extra heads. For no good reason*.

*okay, I'm lying. We're rotting out eyes so siege operators, who we never use anyway, will be less wimpy, and soldiers stop trying to kill things in an order different from what we've devised.

News from Dangermouse: I've just made the most stupid mistake I've ever made in this game.

I decided to put some idle dwarves to work smoothing the newer areas of the fortress. I hit the keys, dragged the box over the z-level, and turned my attention to other things. It turns out I'd hit 'a' instead of 's' and set them all carving fortifications instead. Oh yes, and my fortress was dug around a volcano shaft.

It didn't take long for the inevitable to happen. The only places they were able to carve were the older parts right by the shaft, so they went straight to it. At least I've finally earned my magma-fail badge. I don't play around with it too often so I've been looking forward to this.
Baptism in fire! Welcome to dwarfdom, and congratulations for such a spectacular magma-fail.  :D

Awwww!
"My mummy is the best in the world because she's nice and she's pretty and she makes me *cat tallow biscuits* and she kills ravening skinless horrors of the deep! Love you mummy!"

144
I'm sure that wasn't the intended effect of that post, but I'm so using that next time for a deep(er) fortress, as a way to bring migrants down faster.  :D

With cages, the trick would be to find something that destructs the container after landing. Fire or magma would do that.
Of course, it would also roast the dwarf inside, which is, for once, unquestionably unproductive and unwanted here.

« on: September 01, 2011, 05:01:43 pm »
I dunno, that makes sense. Kinda. After all, dwarfs may like certain creatures they could not possibly have encountered (newborns who like kobolds, really?), purely imaginary beasts (such as centaurs), materials that aren't supposed to exist (hello, Urist McDuke who would like a demon rat leather robe*...), things that don't exist by virtue of not having been genned in their world (no, Urist McMason, I've checked thrice today, there just isn't any plump helmet),...
... or create objects that their civilization just don't make (thanks for the blowgun, Urist McPossessedBowyer, you earned a guided visit to the bridge-a-pult), and that might not even exist due to non-existent corresponding civilization (what do you call this, Urist? A mah-skh? I'll ask our next elf POW if they know about it)...
... why not objects that don't exist yet?

*If that sort of feature bug has been fixed, then ignore that specific example.

There's the equation of Murphy' Law in the code.
Yes, there's an equation for that, and Toady One alone has found it.

The most valuable dwarf to me is the very last dwarf standing.

149
Of course he's making a garden statues of himself! He's the most interesting dwarf in the world, yes or no?  :P

... combining magma and water during the fall? Now, there's potential. I'm feeling a fey mood coming right up...
