DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What are your most dwarven defences?
« on: May 02, 2011, 04:22:20 am »
Some hastily-made cave-in trap connected to a lever inside the fort.
Absolutely fucking deadly: check. Absolutely fucking deadly to everything: check. One-use, needs to be reloaded: check. Requires extensive use of stones: check. Likely to cause other casualties: check. Awesome but impractical: check. Completely dependent of the whims and union of the lever-puller: check. Also very good for causing unfortunate accidents: check.
Yep, if that's not dwarven, then I don't know what is. No, actually, I know, I could somehow add magma to that, but I haven't found any yet.

Learning to placate ambushes and sieges with cave-ins and almost no trap/military.
Why didn't anybody tell me before how fun* it is?!

*the human definition of fun you find in any dictionary. Not FunŽ, although it could switch at any instant into its dwarven meaning.

New fort, partly on a mountain, partly on serene lands, with a brook. Hey, it's my very first good map! Just seen pixies and gnomes for now, but that'll do  :D
There's few wood and few bushes, and it's winter almost half the year, but that adds to the challenge, right? So, at the very least, I got lots of sphalerite... sphalerite... more sphalerite... lignite... sphalerite... oh, and galena in the caverns.
... I think that means there's no copper or iron.
Oh, for Armok's sake.
... that will add to the challenge too.  8)

EDIT: HOLY MOLLY my high master immigrant weaponsmith has a fey mood! And he gathered all materials necessary! Oh boy oh boy

This 10-year-old fort ended with a dragon attack. Way to celebrate the abandonment, thanks for the fireworks, Akera!  ;D

Nekikdastot, The Cold Sword, a large, serrated adamantine disc.
This is a large serrated adamantine disc. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with lapis lazuli and indigo tourmaline, decorated with (dyed midnight blue) llama wool and encircled with bands of adamantine. This object menaces with spikes of marble, indigo tourmaline and sheep leather. On the item is an image of squares in green glass.

It's worth almost 5 millions Urist.  :D

Gotta use that thing at least once before I abandon the fort, seriously.

My mayor just asked for a billon slab in her office.
And things were going so well, too.  >:(

May I suggest causing a cave-in? Ideally, collapse the floor the prisoner is standing on, but you can also instead collapse something right next to the prisoner (not on top of them, else you just get pancakes). More often than not, I had civilians survive such things with many broken bones. You run the risk of also tearing the spine, therefore dooming them to suffocation, but it should be worth it.

Again, I'm skeptical about the "maximum intensity" and amount of effects thing. Had dorfs survive a combination of vomiting, fever, and goddamn blisters all over the body; they walk it out within 5 minutes like nothing happened. I had dorfs who were only affected by long, but temporary blindness. And I had 4 dorfs drop dead quickly because the only syndrome they had was brain rot.

There is a vast epidemic due to deadly blood*.
... which, strangely, isn't actually deadly at all. Sure, blisters pop up on every inch of one's body, raises dangerously their body temperature, and cause incontrollable vomiting... but once they reach the hospital, bam, they walk out even faster.
Won't bother cleaning up everything. It's the most benign thing I've ever had since the blessed mass blindness syndrome.

*worth noting it was spread by a humanoid toad from the deep.

Horses.

By the way, I now have a urge to mod some creature based on a badger, but horse-sized and with hooves.

Finished the giant statue of the goddess of oaths! It... it looks like what I intended in Stonesense, for once. I'm finally getting the hang of it :'(
On another note, artifact shiny blue mace. Goddamnit!
Now I've completed the megaprojects, I'll abandon the fort once it reaches 10 years of age. If it doesn't crumble to its end first.  :D

Silvermoon.
Not a weird artifact name by itself. More facepalm-worthy when you realize the only picture on that purple gem amulet is one of blazing suns.

Oh gods I am screwed.
I'm playing an unmodded game of Dwarf Fortress, with the exception of the Matrix tileset. Elves come, I seize some food, wine and their good animals (a jaguar and a cougar). That was before I realized who the trader was.

Wave goodbye to your fortress. And possibly your civilization, too.
