Have they already been sheared recently? I believe it takes some time for the wool to grow back, much like you can't milk animals just whenever you want to.

Artifact gold maces are perfectly fine weapons. For what's worth, the first soldiers to get titles in my forts (and therefore the deadlier ones) tend to be macedorfs for some reason, way before hammerdorfs.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: A happy ending for a fort?

The only sort of dwarven happy ending I can conceive is the one where I abandon the fort before anything especially horrific starts happening.
Yes, forceful exile is the "best" solution. This is the dwarven way. That, or you could play long enough to have everyone die of old age, but I think it's seriously more depressing for all parties involved. And boring. Infinitely more boring.

I guess I got bad dice rolls.
Nope, they've just got an excellent, overzealous union.

My previous fort was quite notorious for having visits from elven merchants coinciding exactly with goblin ambushes.
... I got many free tamed animals.
They never got any lead goblet, or rock craft, or body back, until I bothered to install protections 10-odd years later. And no, they never attacked me back, but I suspect that's because they feared they would be synchronized with a goblin siege.

Goblins finally noticed after 8 years that yes, there was a big fortress in their neighbourhood.
So, it's been 2 years they're visiting me every 6 months or so.
Gotta say, I appreciate their newfound dedication. I even let the first squad run away mostly unscathed once they realize they invaded the wrong fort! I'm a good sport. Besides, their demonic overlords will punish them much more harshly if they go back home.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Background to your forts
« on: April 24, 2011, 05:18:53 pm »
At the dawn of civilization, one fort was founded as a haven for the dwarfs seeking to make history, and most importantly, those seeking to put it in pictures. Gorgeous crowns to cry for were made for the royalty by the finest crafters, with materials only ingenious minds could rediscover. Its ambition drove it to be one of the most important trading place to date, with incredibly delicate but filling dishes, clothes marked by important figures (several made by none other than the duke himself), and relics from misunderstood invaders. Those successfully braving the dangers of the badgerkind, greenskins, and random thawing are guaranteed the protection of the most motivated warriors and the sharpest traps.

tl;dr: Mindflag the Eye of Focus is a goddamned tourist traps where we sell you incredibly fattening meals, several brands of tattered socks and mittens, and loot. Seeing how we're at the start of history and we've always been victorious by default, our collective memory is dwarvocentric and short-sighted. I am tired of my 4 artifact crowns. Too many damn idlers. Marksdorfs are doomed, as well as half the military at any given time. Well, at least the traps are working well.

Holy gosh, I welcomed the queen inside my fortress. It's my very first time without royalty dying upon arrival. And as expected, she has no preference, either. I love her so much already.  :'(

Crap, did I inadvertently create a meme again?
THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON DRUGS, KIDS.
*cough*
In other news, I've got a whole army of armorsmiths, weaponsmiths, and farming dorfs having one of these as their highest moodable skill, but for some reason, I only have one artifact weapon/armor after 8 years. And will you guys stop being possessed, for Armok's sake!

There are two forgotten beasts chillin' in my first cavern. Both of them have poisonous gas attacks, so I'm not exactly eager to send my melee dwarves down there. Is there an easy way to check if they can fly, so my marksdwarves can deal with them easily?
Wings ([v] -> [w] ).

It is just an organic crab, but just how dangerous are giants if its as dangerous as one of em'? Plus, I think the hole connecting the fortress to the cavern is actually several Z-levels above the water and it has no wings or anything. Also, its during my first siege so if I could somehow capture it and sic it on the gobbos that would be particularly awesome dwarfy.
Well... you might want to send a whole bunch of dwarfs against it. Avoid going 1vs1 with these big monsters, try to overwhelm them instead with sheer number to exterminate them fast and with as few casualties as possible. In this case, if you can also manage to shoot bolts at it without allowing it to get its huge claws on an archer, you should be safe (this strategy works a lot well with beasts having ranged abilities: deadly dust, poisonous vapors, fire breathing, etc). If I understand the situation correctly, then indeed, only winged creatures could reach your fortress, and this isn't one of them. You seem to be a beginner, so your military might not be quite optimized yet, therefore, you should mentally prepare yourself for a few losses.
Sadly, FBs aren't affected by normal traps (unless you can somehow knock it out on top of a cage trap without killing it), so it could prove to be quite the difficult task.  :( But you could still survive the siege and release the goblin prisoners near said FB...

For starters, web-shooting FBs just don't shoot webs. So, that's one less deadly ability to deal with.
Secondly, it doesn't seem to be made of an unusual material. If it were made of something solid (stone, gems, etc), then it would have been more difficult to kill; if it's made of something softer (mud, salt, water, etc), then even a 2-year-old can punch its head off. I suppose it is a "normal", organic crab there, since you didn't mention material. So... it itself, it shouldn't be much more dangerous than, say, a giant or a cyclops.
However, FBs naturally swim and never drown, so watch out. It can get annoying if it decides instead to chill out in the body of water instead of walking in a predictive manner towards your fort.

It appears the guy who killed the forgotten beast singlehandedly is going to die for it. The beast had poisonous gas, which I didn't worry about because it only gave him a fever at first, but now he's numb too, and spends his time mindlessly wandering the caverns.
Also happening to me.
Bad news: shit, that FB's made of coke and it can fly! Oh, and poisonous vapors.
Good news: the 3 soldiers that laid their hands on it dispatched it pretty damn quickly.
Worse news: is that their brain that's rotting? Oops, three less dorfs. We hardly knew ye, guys.

(My fortress now contains 96 fewer dwarves than the 96 it had a couple of minutes ago)
Mind if I use that particular quote in my sig?  ;D
