Tilesets and Graphics / Re: Ironhand's Graphics Set (0.31.18 version out!)

i think you misunderstand, i mean the brightness of the tiles. not anything to do with numbers.
they used to be very bright now theyre quite dark.
Is this what you mean?
Well, before I turned [SHOW_FLOW_WHATEVER] back on, all water tiles were looking the same no matter their actual content, and therefore were dark. Same for magma. After I fixed it, my eyes hurt from how bright the water tiles had become in comparison. And no, despite what the description of the option may tell you, in that graphic pack, the red and blue numbers that tell you how deep magma/water is in vanilla ARE replaced by their corresponding tile.
Unless you mean something else completely, in which case I apologize and would like a screenshot to understand what's your actual problem.

Possible that he died at the start of the embark by standing on a frozen lake as it thawed?

no, no frozen lake (i am in a scorching climate, near a volcano). and she was a dwarf of the first migrant wave.

and no, she wasn't swimming in lava. maybe one of the warthog wandering near the fortress...?

Edit: looking at the status screen i saw "Her upper body is gone". I also noticed some elephant wandering around... solved the mystery!
Well, all dead things are described as having their "upper body gone" whether or not they suffered related injuries...

edited out a bad case of Department of Redundancy Department

Make lavish meals, and sell them. Brand name food is for win!
Marketing? I like it. Mmmmhhhhh... it's sad dwarfs don't butcher sentient creatures, or else I'd try selling humans some meals made of their own meat and tallow. After all, I already succeeded at selling them goblin accessories made of human hair, bone, teeth and nail...

Uk Lunchtummy, the Sugary Peaches.
He's the god of food (no shit Urist) and is massively worshiped in my current fort. I don't know what to make of it.

I have a dwarf heading this way. First, he lost his left upper arm completely. I can't remember when it happened, it was so long ago, and he was one of my first migrants. He was an amazing hammerdwarf. He got an accident 2-3 years ago where he lost the use of his other arm. In the beginning, he was very useless and acted as if it was his ability to stand he had lost for he wouldn't move for days. I only kept him in the army for his dignity, and also because his son was the mayor. Then suddenly, a few days ago, when the worst Forgotten Beast I've had yet to fight arrived, when my meatshields were done buying time, that veteran kicked and bit the damn thing and only got bruised in the process. He wasn't alone to fight the monster at this point, but damn, he's a damn good kicked, and he's only dabbling. Must check if he has at least his armor on.

Whats with the REALLY dark water and magma now, its so darn annoying, i cant tell what level its at.
Any particular reason it was changed?
Go in the d_init.txt file in the data folder, and you'll see the option to show water level as a number (must be SHOW_FLOW or something). It was inadvertently turned off for this version, so no, no particular reason.

Oh my Armok the miners found another adamantine pillar I don't know if it is compensating for the stupidity I've had to deal with or if it is a way to say I'm gonna be screwed soon but it's awesome

Dear migrants,

please stop coming if you're not at least Adequate in a useful skill. I am tired of seeing you're barely novice at your job. Beside, "Milker" isn't useful here. "Strand extractor" isn't either. Nor is "Fisherdwarf", or "Fish Cleaner", or anything to do with fish.
It is entirely your fault if I have made a squad just for you unskilled rookies. You're all good meatshields, than I can give you. Every single one of you is otherwise a waste of (unbuilt) bedroom, food, booze, and FPS.

Hope you'll understand,
Your Overseer who wonders if you are all from Boatmurdered or Headshoot or something that would make you think my fortress is safer.

A Forgotten Beast, an eyeless serpent with a shell and venomous blood, instead of going right for the fortress, stalks its victims deeper in the caverns before biting their limbs off. It kills 4 dwarfs, among which a talented surgeon and a baby. All my military is after it, even though I know venomous blood = FunŽ.
It climbs up some carved stairs and decides to attack a planter. It rips his left hand off, then the guy decides to counter-attack and punch it.
Bikda Usaneslul, monster from oblivion, slithering stalker, hater of all that is good, short and hairy, dodges, falls 4 z-levels down, and cracks its skull open.
...
... well, the fort was overpopulated anyway.
*off to rewards the dwarf in some way while facepalmiiiing*

EDIT: THERE ARE MORE MIGRANTS COMING
WTF GUYS WHAT DID I JUST SAY

I'm a wuss, so I use graphic packs in order to get a slight idea of what's going on.

Its more possible to savescum artifacts. Save a few days after the mooded dwarfs starts working, then you can restore for different artifacts.
I've already done that! Just keep in mind that the ingredients won't be changed (of course), nor the name, so if you are stuck with something awesome but whose name translate into "Boilingbowels the Damp Suffering", you'll have to stick with it.

Embarks are getting freaky and amazingly dwarfy recently.
Can't really answer you, but yes, please try and do something out of it!

I wonder what the embark team was thinking at the time.
Thinking?
They were probably too drunk to think.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most Anticlimatic Battles Ever
« on: December 13, 2010, 05:17:21 am »
Reached special levels today. And, surprisingly, it does not directly involve cage traps (or rather, they would have been legitimately part of the climax if they had a chance to function).
Milol Battleclash, the Renown of Danger. He's a bronze colossus who has killed so many things he appears in many of my engravings. And he's decided to visit my fortress.
First, I freak out, completely forgetting its deadly weakness to cage traps (which wouldn't have helped me much anyway, as he'd have to get a lot closer in the process). It starts by finding a weaver, kicks him like a soccer ball, and punches his brain out. While it took longer than I had expected, I'm still very nervous. My best macedwarf, looking for her equipment, has her spine damaged upon the first hit, and then, he proceeds to box her until she suffocate. Again, taking a bit long, but I do not suspect a thing.
That's when I send an axedwarf to try and lure the monster on a trap after I remembered their existence that I notice Milol only bruises his victims' heads. That's all he does. He punches too fast to be stopped and most if not all attacks glance away. He pursues other dwarfs and boxes them furiously. He lays a hand on the mayor and won't let go. But again, he only inflict bruises, though they're painful. I'm starting to wonder how long he'll take to kill dwarfs, if my mayor has a chance to survive (he's in the middle of two meetings and was candidate to mayor), and how long before Milol takes the hint and steps on a trap. That might take a while, what with the copious amounts of war dogs stationed on the way.
Then I notice he's using a cougar leather mitten to slap my dorfs.
What?
He turned to have stolen it not from the third, nor the second, but his very first victim, the weaver. And he really likes that mitten.
He was slapping everyone as if he were some gentleman challenging to a duel.
Then a goddamn possession happened, migrants popped up, I was worried about the mayor, and I was fed up with the bronze colossus, so I reloaded. I wish, when he comes back, he won't steal a goddamn glove.
