DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: December 12, 2010, 06:43:23 pm »
And on top of that, there are migrants arriving. Oh, and a possession in a metalsmithing workshop.
Even though the mayor is in danger of dying and I can't afford losing him now (has to do with two meetings in progress and his nomination to baron), I'm very tempted to not reload just for the sheer stupidity of it all.

EDIT: wait, I understand why all he can do is bruise his victims. He stole a cougar leather mitten and is slapping an axedwarf and the mayor at high speed with it. I think I will reload for the sake of preserving everyone's dignity and pretend none of this ever happened.

... oh, right, cage trap.
Well, I got a chance to survive, there are several traps around. I just hope he has the good idea to step on one before he's done boxing the whole army. They seem extremely eager to meet a legend.

There's a friggin' bronze colossus that appeared
Milol Battleclash the Renown of Danger
this thing appears on several engravings after slaughtering so many things
WHY ME
sending all the military, and getting ready to ragequit and reload if they fail.
WHYYYYY
I read that as booze colossus for some reason.
Lead it into a dark room below a magma chamber. Melt that monstrosity to the ground!
Do you have any idea where's the closest magma? Waaaaaay below. Way. Below.
Oh good god it's kicked my best macedwarf to death and she didn't manage to land a single hit OH GOD IT'S COMING AND IT IS bruising a war dog to death...

DF General Discussion / Re: Justifying embark sites
« on: December 12, 2010, 10:23:00 am »
Depends of the location. For now, I've gotten quite tame/convenient embarks.
"Windslap... Windslap... hey, guys, let's build a buncha windmills to power our stuff."
"Dun the windmills gotta be aboveground to work?"
"Yes they do."
"I dinnae wanna spend the rest of my life building aboveground shit and cut wood."
"If this place was called 'Waterslap' then we could maybe consider improvising watermills with the two carp-infested murky pools we got, but until further notice, this is not Waterslap but Windslap. Also, we need a nice, high tower up in the air so we can feel the wind better, and launch prisoners from. Y'know, through the air."
"Ach, good thing we're not in Bowelpaints or something then."

But once I try more dwarfy stuff, it is probably going to end up this way...
"We lost two more miners today, but I'm confident that we'll get enough clueless migrants soon who didn't hear about the guys encased in ice."
"What are we building first again, boss, by the way?"
"A large reservoir powered by the damn aquifer. As engineers, we must check if it is possible to build a lasting fortress with an aquifer, a global sewer system, and a statue of Armok that shits war dogs. Oh, and completely safe freezing traps that will only catch invaders and elfs and nothing else."
"Why do we have to check that? The mountainhome's down south in the desert, this must be the only aquiferous place in the whole country, there are 3 other colonies planning to make much better monuments to Armok, there are many better ways to dispose of goblins including but no limited to pointy stuff, blunt stuff, cages and magma, and we don't need no sewer."
"We're doing it for !!SCIENCE!!, Urist, remember that. Then when we're done with that, we will flood the whole place and give our report to the king."
"Why flood it?"
"So nobody will steal our technology."
"Wouldn't it be simpler to keep it intact for latter use since, if we succeed, we will kinda have proved your project is possible?"
"And never get to apply my theory according to which only 3 pumps, 5 doors and a dead potash maker is well enough to get all the water out of a frozen fortress? Never!"

Nancy, France. There is an ungodly mixture of leftover snow that won't melt, and cold rain. I didn't know you could slip and slide like that without the temperature dropping under 0°C.

A well will not stop water from overflowing and flooding your entire fortress, covering everything in mud.

I found out about this by flooding my hospital ;)
Hey, I also discovered that in my previous fort!

Also, if someone faints/falls, I'm not sure they will wake up in one piece, or wake up at all, however, their body parts will certainly be found to the very bottom. Can be solved with floor grates, but honestly, do you really want to make and place so many?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How to deal with an injured child
« on: December 11, 2010, 05:33:33 pm »
Dedicate your entire fortress to preserving the life of this child. Surround that hospital with horrible traps and vigilant guards 24/7. Put in food/booze stockpiles, at least one 24/7 caretaker permanently assigned to a burrow covering the room, and levers poised to cave-in natural stone walls into the only passageway leading to the structure (and have this entrance a good couple screens away, of course).

Check his preferences and fill his surrounding space with things that he likes.

When he comes of age, find a young female dwarf and assign her to a burrow covering his bed and adjacent squares, including another bed and a quantum stockpile of food and booze.

That sounds kinda like the premise of the movie version of Silent Hill. Keep the little witch girl alive.
Ooooh! And replace the floor with grates and smear blood and Forgotten Beast extract all over the place. Hell, let Forgotten Beasts wander around as long as they don't threaten the little patient.

Nah, I got a better idea to make absolutely everyone happy.
A spear in one hand. A mace in the other. Both artifacts.
... oh, and if he wants a shield on top of that, he can hold it between his teeth if he's not too fond of shaking gross things to death with his mouth.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bad thoughts and you. (POLL)
« on: December 11, 2010, 12:44:23 pm »
I'm having a mixed position about this. When I see an unhappy dwarf (generally the same ones), I keep an eye on them but don't actually do anything about it, except maybe assign them temporarily a bedroom for a future noble if they complain about the sleep or the lack of bedroom ownership. I don't care much about anything anymore, by which I mean unless I'm losing one of the very few dwarfs I want to keep alive for whatever reason, I don't regret seeing a dwarf die and I'm very, very likely not to do anything about the threat to the other dwarfs (be it water flow, wild animals, or syndromes spread through extract).
The way I manage my fortress however, I rarely see unhappy ones. The standard bedroom is 2x3 because it's easier to the eye for me and it allows me to dig out more stone for big constructions; I engrave most owned rooms because I like to pause sometimes, chill out and take a look at the latest engravings. And I'm finishing slowly a megaproject that will hopefully project mist over several levels of my fortress in the main halls in order to make the dwarfs happy, do a little bit of cleaning, utterly kill my FPS, and feed at last the damn well in the hospital.
So... I guess the factor in their happiness is caused by the specific project of my fortress rather than my philosophy overall. If I wanted to waste as little stone as possible and play with magma instead, you bet I'd already have gotten tantrum spirals.

More migrants
180 dwarfs
*twitches* I think I'll rearrange my execution tower to accept friendless, skillless dwarfs through the clever use of military. If they survive, they'll train my doctors. Ivory Quake! Advance to the catapult bridge, will you?

EDIT: also, there's a ghostly diagnostician in the hospital. Alas, she is but a forlorn haunt, not a murdering bitch coming straight back from hell.

Fact: I slaughtered several Forgotten Beasts in highly-frequented parts of the partly-flooded caverns.
Fact: I had little regard for the risks implied by such a neglect, because I'm naively thinking I need more FunŽ and the water would wash away the crap anyway.
Fact: all tame animals that aren't restrained war dogs or piled up in a cage are sleeping, and they have been doing so for... huh, a while.
Fact: my mayor sleeps and eat a lot. I just found out today he specifically woke up just so he could drink, then went back to sleep.
Fact: I don't remember any monster causing comas, but maybe that's because they ate their victims before the extract affected them.
Fact: while my mayor is turning into a short alcoholic hibernating bear, there is one diplomat and one outpost liaison waiting for him to finish/start a meeting and promote him to baron.
Factual conclusion: I am a complete moron.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The greatest enemy of my dwarves...
« on: December 11, 2010, 06:59:42 am »
My biggest enemy is my trend to resume my big projects at the wrong time... you know, right before a siege.
Oops, I forgot to forbid that hatch cover. I guess the gobbos have claimed that door... errr, how did they reach the surrounding wall leading to the roof? Oh, right, I was about to build some walls to prevent them from using the wall connected to the bridge as a highway. Hey, there's a bunch of lashers, but do not fear, dear dwarfs, my sewer system's ready! Wait, why is the water pouring instead on the fleeing civilians and pushing them in the brook... dammit, they didn't finish building that one floor tile, that's why.
... *forcecrashes and reload*

Dear mayor,

STOP SLEEPING AND DRINKING. YOU HAVE ONE DIPLOMAT AND ONE OUTPOST LIAISON FROM LAST YEAR WAITING TO FINISH PROMOTING YOU INTO A BARON. Geez, you really ARE a spoiled teenager.

Love,

Your Overseer who only likes you for your easily satisfied mandates and bans.
