DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: November 22, 2010, 11:51:24 am »
My paraplegic dwarf died of thirst because of a stupid burrow issue. He didn't suffer long, at least!
However, now he's been replaced by a mostly useless strand extractor who stood too close to my Goblin War Criminal Public Execution Device - GWCPED®. Now he can't stand AND can't grasp anything anymore at all. Since nerve damage was listed, I think I just found my new permanent hospital resident.  ???

Dear Shorast (for a change) McHealthcareTasksEnabled,

feed the goddamn patients.
Especially when said patients are soldiers with a broken arm.

Your overseer, who quite enjoys having a new mask

This really didn't make me mad, just frustrated - I had a recent, nearly useless migrant with novice skills in animal training, metal crafting, and glass making go into a secretive mood... and not do anything despite having every workshop built. I even deconstructed and rebuilt the smelters and forges but to no avail. She just hung out in her room and slowly went melancholy.   ???
They don't like magma-powered stuff in general; maybe she wanted a regular one while you only had magma ones? Fey moods, fortunately, require no charcoal, so you wouldn't have wasted anything more than the actual materials of the artifact.

Puppy bomb!  All dogs+cage+lever, off-main entrance in a diagonal niche (for buildng breakers).I thought everyone did that with wardogs after the first elf caravan (if anything good comes)!

.... do you mean to tell me that building destroyers cannot break things from a diagonal angle?!
I can guarantee you I had a forgotten beast destroy a diagonal door, so don't get your hopes up. Or maybe it had to do with the fact there were fortifications and no solid wall?

Nobody will give water to the dehydrated patients, among which an axedwarf who only has a broken arm. I have no idea what is it exactly that everyone is doing with the goddamned buckets. *facepalms*

EDIT:
OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE
the burrow was somehow still in application despite having disabled the alert. Had to delete it to allow everyone to move.

There's one god massively worshiped in my fortress.
Uk Lunchtummy, the Sugary Peaches, god of food.
The mind boggles.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Who do YOU Give the Best Tombs?
« on: November 22, 2010, 05:30:54 am »
I make special tombs for my military because, well, they're trying hard. Even those that become paraplegic during their first or second training session with a live goblin, I give them a glass coffin among the rest of the fallen squads.
The artifact sarcophagi, because we don't get many if any at all, go to whoever is the most important noble at the time. And if I can afford it, I put the nobles cemetery at the same level as the military.
As for dwarves I liked especially (few, they generally lost a limb early on but kept on doing their civilian duty), or kids I feel have died in a very avoidable and cruel way (you know, those who lose all their blood sloooowly, or plain get neglected by the retarded healthcare system), they don't get special tombs or coffins, but they do get statues near their coffins.

However, now that we have slabs, I must change my plans. I think the nobles will be memorialized on slabs put in the dining rooms and entertainment places. The best soldiers will get artifacts. That will save me a lot of space and time.

I really do attract weird cave-ins; within the first minute of existence of my current fort, it seems the whole cavern has collapsed on itself, obliterating a fishmen civilization in the process. Whoops. Now to reach it and see what happened...

Also attracting paraplegic dwarves. My best soldier, a macedwarf with an artifact lead mace, had his lower spine broken and lost the ability to stand... am not optimistic about him. I wonder how long this one will live before he gets euthanized by forgetful fellows. Wish we could get artifact wheelchairs.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: So much facepalm
« on: November 20, 2010, 07:31:54 pm »
You think that's facepalm? I wanted to get some sunlight into my fortress far below the ground. so i channel out this big thing, right? and i put grates on the top of it.

when i look at the finished 20-level hole in the ground i figure .. i dont need the grates. i can put them elsewhere, nothing is going to come down this hole.
so i order it to be removed... and stare in complete disbelief when two dwarves come, stand on the grates AND YANK THEM OUT FROM UNDER EACHOTHERS FEET .. they fall down like choreographed by andrew lloyd webber. dying the exakt same fraction of the second.

I can't help but think of them. standing there without the slightest idea how stupid this is .. and going "okay on the count of three"
... that is awesome in a very dwarfy, fail, stupid way. The mental image made my day.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tantrum spiral final solution????
« on: November 20, 2010, 07:13:27 pm »
I want to build a huge, successful fort, then kill my entire population when migrants arrive. Soldiers will drop all their stuff before entering the atomsmasher.
And that's when an unexpected ambush stumbles on the harmless migrants. Reclaim time!
... no, wait, reclaiming isn't really a much worse alternative anyway. So... where's the flaw in that plan?

Started a new fort (part because I wanted to try the latest version, part because of a bad manip with the save of my prospering fort while wanting to check the world in Legends mode... whoops).
I got way too many corpses. Oh, and ghosts. I'm only putting the aggressive ones to rest so I don't have Fun® overload, as the gobbos seem to have gotten insanely stronger and more numerous since my last fortress, and I'm dealing with kobolds at last. Only one reclaim for the time being... but many, many unhappy dwarfs, one unsatisfied fey mood (why the fuck do you ask for silk cloth right when the [CENSORED] rhesus macaques yoink everything?) and fist fights.
I can mostly survive ambushes by locking everyone in the fort, dehydrating everyone in the process and possibly killing a couple patients. To fix that, as there isn't much water here, I gotta reach a cavern.

Now, that's what I've been looking for. FUN®.

Give them wood
Sieze their goods
Use their skins to make hoods
They'll be in a bad mood.

Dear Urists McOnlyOneSkillAndIt'sNotAnUsefulOne,

I don't know which rotting creature exactly has caused three of your fellow citizens's feet to decay at the speed of light, but could you guys please pick it up in the refuse stockpile and hold it for approximately one minute with both hands (or feet, or mouth, or whatever you please, your call)?
Thanks.

Your Overseer.

P.S.: for what's worth, the only hint I have is a crundle's right upper leg, but feel free to experiment with the Forgotten Beasts, as I swear every single one of them was venomous in its own way.
P.P.S.: you can thank me for having the foresight of placing the commoners' cemetery right next to the main hospital.

EDIT:
Every one of you who has made an artifact, is legendary in at least one skill, and has enough of them to be guaranteed some kind of job every day at the fortress,

you are exempt from the aforementioned suggestion.
No, seriously. Stay the fuck away from that stockpile. There, it doesn't exist anymore (nor your feet and what little life you had, but hey, nobody's perfect). And for good measure, I'm also restricting the area. Don't touch it. Don't look at it. Don't even think about doing it. Don't even think about NOT doing it.

If any of you cause a tantrum spiral because you managed to have a family or a friend, I swear I'm reclaiming the fort just to finish the magma system and flood the whole goddamn thing. Your coffins are NOT magma-safe, just so you know.

Love,

Your Overseer.

Put them all in the military and assign them all shoes.
Oh, good idea.
... after I get an ideal dwarves-to-bedrooms ratio. I'm starting to like that disease. Targets mainly the useless residents.
