DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Surviving The Rot
« on: November 19, 2010, 12:18:21 pm »
I seem to have currently a rather "benign" infection going that specifically rots my dwarfs' feet at a very high speed and cause them to die of blood loss before or right when they reach a hospital bed. However, it hasn't claimed more than 3 victims in 6 months or so. My fortress being a metropolis, I don't really care about it, but I am already planning, for my next fortress, to turn most of the main halls into permanent disinfection/mist chambers. It seems that water turns into mist before even reaching the ground, so I guess that I can do the trick with a high enough waterfall and a whole lot of grates.

Oh, right, the shoes.
... nothing is preventing them from picking up newer ones. They are literally littered EVERYWHERE. Some deceased gobbo must have had your size, don't be picky.
In other news, my first prisoner
It's a bug at the moment, they'll never replace their clothes even though they continue to claim some as their own and store them in their rooms/cabinets.  Play long enough and you have naked dwarves wearing nothing but their stitches and bandages!
Yet another bug? I don't care, nobody will live long enough at this rate for their clothes to be worn out completely; the mysterious infection has claimed another victim that at least reached a bed. I didn't witness her, but from the trail of blood, it seems the source has moved from the refuse stockpiles to a well-defined butchery. But I'm too cruel to do something about it. Don't have time to build enough beds for the new migrants. I'm at 150 dorfs now, seriously.

Huh, elves probably go somewhere instead after death. Maybe they go on to possess a tree, or they go back home to eat their loved ones' tender flesh. Who knows.

In other news, my first prisoner miraculously survived. He was put in a nice cell, but everyone forgot to feed him at some point, and he spent a whole month staring at random guys taking their lunch to eat in the empty, open cells, including all my soldiers (because I had the bright idea to make one room the jail AND the barracks, you know, in case a criminal breaks out and goes berserk; I only fully close the cells with vertical bars if they seem too strong for their restraint or deserve their punishment).

EDIT: AHAHAHAHAHAH DRAGON
it died on the 3rd weapon trap or so before any dorf could reach it but DRAGON
and my first burning thing: a war dog corpse, unreachable by my water system! Man.

I see your bones, and I raise you Unulkurol, The Dank Embraces.
It's a turtle shell mask. Nothing more. 840 dorfdollars.
I beat all of you.
The crafter must have cut two holes in a turtle shell for the eyes and called it a day.

However, I rather like it; I picture my overseer wearing it constantly for the sake of mystery and stuff.

Hm, it's the return of the bleeding feet syndrome. An ex-mayor and now planter had the time to reach the hospital, but not a bed this time, before he dropped dead and devoid of blood. He cancelled his task in the same general area as the previous victim: in the huge external refuse stockpile.
I'd investigate seriously, if I weren't happy about getting rid of another mouth effortlessly. Seriously, I got a bunch of migrants that can hardly do anything... again. Maybe I can trick a noble into walking there if they start being unreasonable.

Killed a Forgotten Beast ever? Looks like you've got The Rot! Good times. Look for and Restrict/Clean any tiles with Forgotten Beast extract or blood on them, or you'll see more of this from anyone else walking through it.
Doesn't make sense! The girl never got near any sort of Forgotten Beast (remains) whatsoever, many others did, they're all healthy, and it's been many months since I last killed one! Or she did it alone while I was busy with something else, and she was especially unlucky for one of the few dwarfs that were supposed to be rarely sick.
Oh well. If it turns out it is The Rot® after all, I will consider doing something about it. Maybe. Haven't had Fun® in a while, there's no time to be cautious now.
Nothing like a fortress-wide bath day to get all the bad diseases away.

Except maybe a fortress-wide bath day with water.
With water? Are you gonna tell me to use soap, next? I'm disinfecting the above with magma. If that don't kill the toxins as well as the ambushing goblins wandering around, nothing will. The magma pumping system should be ready soon if the dorfs stop procrastinating.

Same, all dwarves in my current fortress have sandy taupe skin, thin lips and protruding jade eyes (along with a couple extremely common, maybe even exclusive, characteristics concerning their ears and nose). I've gotten so used to it it's going to be strange for me to meet different dwarves in a future fortress. Also, I ran world gen for about 250 years, so...

What the shit? A furnace operator suddenly cancelled her work to rest, and I noticed she was bleeding profusely from both feet. She starts walking away, gets more and more dizzy and pale, and drops dead before she even sees the entrance of the fortress. Nothing seems to have touched her at all.
Given she was worshipping Säd, the god of rumors, and that I like to think he's able to make them true, let's say this is a miracle. One less useless mouth to feed!
(I'm still playing .16, by the way.)

A llama just kicked a weaponsmith and killed her.
Wait, this is not the entire story.
A llama kicked a weaponsmith into the goddamn river, breaking one of her leg. She wasn't even stunned or anything, and there was a ramp 2 tiles away, but she still drowned.
It's been a long time I haven't dealt with friggin' llamas. *facepalm*

Nope, actually, that's a well-known bug (or feature?). Makes it extremely easy to get tons of free stuff... which is why it would be undwarfy to abuse it, but hey, your call.
