DF Suggestions / Decay: A Hypothetical Tag of Great Versatility
« on: June 08, 2013, 08:06:54 pm »
Earlier this evening, for reasons which I have forgotten, I was imagining a tag which would turn one material into another after a time. It evolved into this idea:

[DECAY:(transformed material):(transformed material):X:(released material):(released material)]

I had some ideas of additional complications, but this is the simplest idea and seems like it could easily capture all the needed effects.

How the Tag Works:
There are six parts, which we will examine individually:
DECAY--Identifies the tag as the "Decay" tag.
(transformed material):(transformed material)--A material tag which identify the substance that the original material becomes. "NONE:NONE" would make it vanish.
X--A number. It controls how long the material takes to decay. It could be measured in days, steps, or some other unit; maybe an X:Y thing, for a minimum and maximum time taken, would be better.
(released material):(released material)--The gas released by the decay, if any. "NONE:NONE" (or just NONE?) would make it not release anything.

How It Might Work:
Whenever an item is created, if it is of a decaying material, it has its "decay timer" started, determined by X. When this timer runs out, the object is replaced with an identical one made of the "transformed material". Decorations, coverings, and such are unaffected, although such things should probably decay as well. At this point, a given quantity of a fog made of the released material is, um, released.
Miasma would need to be made into a material as well. Still, this should be a fairly minor issue given the number of other hardcoded materials.
It should probably go without saying, but artifacts would not be affected by decay.

Obvious Uses:
Rotting: Should be obvious.
Rusting/Tarnishing Metals: Simply make "Rusty Iron," "Tarnished Copper," etc, and have the metals become the rusty/tarnished version. Perhaps you could go further to represent further levels of oxidation (Iron to Rusty Iron to Very Rusty Iron to Rust, say), but this might be a bit silly.
Rotten Wood: Current rotting is far to fast for wood. If we could make wood turn into rotten wood in a few years, instead of having it rot to nothingness in a few months while releasing an awful stench, wood would become all the more realistic.
Vanishing Blood: Unless contaminants didn't properly decay, of course.
Delayed-Use Gases: Mostly for modders. Basically, a reaction could create an item which would decay into a cloud of gas of some kind. Heck, all kinds of things could be done by modders!

Why Bother?
It allows malleability in the system, and includes another feature long awaited into the mix. Not to mention that it would be another excellent tool for modders.

This isn't a suggestion I expect to be added soon, but a system like this could improve DF greatly.

General Discussion / GIMP Layers--Help Desired!
« on: May 29, 2013, 08:17:43 pm »
I'm trying to figure out GIMP. The thing that strikes me the most is its use of layers, which seems like it would be rather useful for illustrated suggestion games and the like. I have some things I'd like to do but can't figure out how.

1. Is it possible to move a layer that's smaller than the whole picture's size around within the larger image?
2. How would one bring in a given image previously created as a new layer, e.g. a character "sprite" for an ISG?

And while I'm here:

3. What other features of GIMP do you think would be useful to me?
4. Do you have any suggestions of programs which would work better for my needs?

35
Yes, I'm doing this. Funny, huh?

Most relevant song, even if they do cut off the last chord.
One day more to Révolution! The month is February, the year 1848. It is just over half a century since France abolished its monarchy and just under that since it got a new one. Eighteen years ago, the king was deposed and replaced with one no better than the last. And here we are again, with the French people unwilling to be slaves again (any more). And worst of all, General Lamarc is dead, the spark which set off the powder-keg of France. There is one day more to revolution, and everyone in Paris knows it, from the revolutionaries and army to the beggars and cons in the streets. However, just because tomorrow is the judgement day doesn't mean that nothing happens today!

This will be a three-act Roll to Dodge. The first act ("One Day More") will consist of everything up until the final days of this monarch begin and the barricades are begun. The second act ("Night of Anguish") will consist of the time spent either in battle or waiting for the enemy to arrive--basically, from the barricades being built to when they are no longer needed. The final act (Empty Chairs at Empty Tables) will essentially consist of cleanup and coping, and will go until no one is interested in it or nothing interesting is going on.

Bear in mind, this is a pretty serious and quite realistic Roll to Dodge game; if you want to be a wizard, you'd better have a darn good reason for one being here. (Hint: Not happening.) That said, "cinematic" characters (such as the unusually strong Jean Valjean) are perfectly acceptable.

Signups are essentially unlimited until Act III, as long as you can justify your arrival ("He was always there and just not important" is probably acceptable).
Spoiler: Signup Sheet (click to show/hide)
Please try to show some creativity; I don't want half a dozen Johnn Valjohns running around Paris. On the other hand, characters based on or similar to book characters are perfectly fine.
As for factions, the Revolutionary and Official labels mean fairly specific things. While a great many people participated in the rebellion early on, many of them fled once the going got tough and the coast got clear. Revolutionaries are not these--they are people like Marius and Enjolras who are willing to die for the cause. Similarly, while a large number of soldiers fought, the Official players are those who are devoted to serving France and typically in positions of power. However, this does NOT mean you can't play such a character; it just means that a Revolutionary or an Official will be assumed to be as described above unless otherwise noted. (And, of course, you can play such folks as random bystanders in unlucky positions or primarily unaffiliated people like the Thénardiers, but you need to either explain how they managed to get into positions where they do relevant stuff or leave a door open for me to do so.)

P.S. French and music are not going to be required on your part (although if you show some work you might get little bonuses), but they may be added later. Warning: the French may be atrocious.

Alright...let's see if we can have this work out. This asteroid seems to have strange properties on the surface, strongest in the caves and valleys. We're detecting a cave system underneath the surface, where these properties should be enhanced. Now, then...remember, here's what we need from you. First, set up the 'Port. This will let you get back and more easily send reinforcements. Secondly, explore. Try not to get lost! We've included some spray paint, use it to mark rooms. Thirdly, try setting up some basic equipment we've sent with you to make a temporary base until such time as you can return. Alright, do you understand everything? Good.

-----

This will be a fairly simple game. The premise is exploring a bunch of caves with weird effects, which would be called magic in many worlds but are called "Anomalies" here. You are a team of explorers, technicians, and such of various backgrounds, brought to investigate the Anomalous Asteroid, a small asteroid orbiting erratically and currently near the Earth-Sun L4 point.

System:
While numbers won't be used much, anything needing such will use the same skill system as in A Beginner's Guide. Basically, a d30 is rolled and modifiers applied to figure out how well you succeed or if you fail.

Characters:
You're experts in your fields, well-known to fellow professionals and possibly to the public at large. You are the best of the best. That's why you were brought here.
Spoiler: Character Sheet (click to show/hide)

-----

The initial team will be somewhere between 4 and 6 members. Waitlisters will be added later, once the 'Port is set up.

General Discussion / Gatsby
« on: May 10, 2013, 10:32:46 pm »
Back in my sophmore year of high school, I--as many of you surely have--read The Great Gatsby, a book which is an American classic.

Just now, I--as many fewer of you surely have--returned from seeing The Great Gatsby in its film adaptation.

I must say, I'm impressed.
Aside from managing to mix emotional turmoil and humor and such in ways which seemed totally natural and managed to not disrupt the flow of the film, the whole made a tale which has bored many a high school student (less weird than I or many of us) managed to keep my attention and interest the whole time.

Even having read the book and knowing how
the movie really just...hit me, you know?

To Luhrmann, I must say: Well done, old sport.

Exactly--Do a Let's Play for the benefit of Bay12, and catering to their suggestions.

Let's get some basic issues settled before we actually start.

Firstly, how should I do this? Screenshots or video, and if the latter, how would I do it?

Secondly, what should our general plan, if any, be?

Thirdly, what should the POV be?

Fourthly, what shall we name our planet?

The character limit in the sig is such a pain, so I've decided to put my forum games here and link to this post from my sig.

Not all games I'm running will be put here, just ones I bother to.

A Beginner's Guide--Inspired by an MS Paint Adventure thingy, guide Persana through a realm she creates and discover the nature of the universe. ASCII Suggestion Game.

The Islands of Misery--A Roll to Dodge game where players battle it out for power, fun, and the precious Loot everyone has. Competitive Arena.

Super-RtD--A Roll to Dodge game where you can take the role of a superhero, supervillain, or super-nothing-in-particular in the mean streets of Chicago.

The Ultimate Hero--An illustrated suggestion game. The Light Monk Kherimhsaz has been killed by Moredread! Play as his apprentice, Daenashura, on her quest for...actually, I'm not sure what she's doing.

Roll To Dodge / The Islands of Misery: Another Turn
« on: May 04, 2013, 01:33:49 pm »
Think of this place as...not exactly an afterlife, I suppose. It's a gateway to a better afterlife, a test, a way to prove yourself worthy of whatever. Show off your stuff to the entire world--anyone who cares to watch--and you will be rewarded as you deserve.
...Why does everyone always start killing each other?

The Islands of Misery started a few months or so ago, when I started making my own loot tables like Looter's Delight's. I had made a game for it...then scratched it, and merged it with another couple ideas I had in the fetal stage. (Figuratively fetal.)

You are spawned atop a mountain, like in LD. Like in LD, you have loot that was randomly generated. Like in LD, you get stat bonuses and new loot by killing other people.
Unlike LD, there is a very specific map. Unlike LD, it's ASCII (because I like ASCII). Unlike LD, loot persists (in fact, your reward is typically just whatever the other guy had on him). Unlike LD, you know of ways to get rewarded that don't involve killing people!

I intend to take about half a dozen players to start, which will probably later be increased.

Any questions or clarifications?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Delinquent Players Help
« on: April 05, 2013, 08:29:40 pm »
I have an occasional problem where players miss a turn or two for unknown reasons. I'm sure we all do. This is a thread to resolve such issues!

Here's how I imagine this working:
1. Player A doesn't post a turn in GM B's game.
2. B posts in this thread, with a brief description of the situation and ideally a link to the most recent turn the player posted in (or at least the game).
3. Bay12ers C and D reply, possibly quoting B or each other so we know which one they're referring to.
4. B takes C and/or D's suggestions.
5. Hilarity ensues.

-----

I'll kick it off. I have a game where the players play mutants. One is still in the lab room and doesn't have much of mutations (although he does think he's a pirate); the other is a repeat offender with a nice little house in a dumpster. Mutations include a snake tail instead of legs, translucent flesh, sensitivity to light, dyslexia, and being really small. What should these people do?

You have decided to volunteer to test a new serum. Depending on stimulus, the serum can cause all sorts of teratomorphisms to the human frame...however, the machine which tries to control the stimuli has gone a little...haywire.

You get one random mutation per turn. This can be good or bad.

You wake up, in a bit of pain and a lot of confusion. Looking around, you see several others doing the same, as well as a few frightened-looking technicians. What will you do?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Magic of the Voice: A Dictated Game
« on: March 19, 2013, 08:52:42 pm »
As you may know I have been confined might have recently. This is give me an idea for a game inspired by 100 I accidentally hit the send button on my tablet fertile keyboard. (Oh well is already going to be holy reas.) anyways the idea of this game is that I basically speak the updates rather than having them in the Civil might have a combat with. This may have some interesting facts on how you comprehend it. Hopefully this will also allow updates to be fairly simple and quick.

I'm out for the actual idea of the game. As for the game which is going to be dictated by voice, this game will be about  a person who will control things with people. Specifically, he is someone who can cause changes in the world like magic with nothing but a word. Game starts with when you first of this building.

3 things first : what is your name, what is your age, and how much should I clarify the things that are kind of the fight will be the way that the voice recognition works?
