DF Modding / D&D Fan Requesting Kobolds
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:15:40 am »
In Dwarf Fortress, kobolds are mute mammals with kleptomania.
In Dungeons and Dragons, kobolds are magical reptiles with dragonblood.
(More specificly on the magic: Kobolds are good at being sorcerors, at least in the fluff.)

This fan of both games would appreciate if a modder made a version of kobolds more like D&D ones.
SRD for kobolds; click on the eye thing for a pictue.

Various things:
1.) Kobolds like mining, trapmaking, and dragons.
2.) They have a tendancy towards sorcery-innate magic; I am not aware of any way to represent this.
3.) Some have wings, some have magic stuff, ,some have claws or fangs, and some have stronger dragon blood. I think that it would be great if you could add some kobolds who could be like these; extra bonus points for some being winged, some having breath weapons, some being dragonwrought; but I would be fine if you just made one caste with all of these. (Picture of a wiged dragonwrought here.
4.) Kobolds hate gnomes. (It's because the gnome god destroyed a big, awesome kobold mine. It makes more sense in context.) If you could find some way to represent that, it would be awesome.
5.) Kobolds speak. (Their normal language is draconic, which might not exist in a world with two or three dragons, tops.)
There's probably some stuff I'm forgetting, but I forgot it.

I'd really appreciate this; I'd do it, but I'm afraid about crazy stuff happening. I'm not much of a modder.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Most Anticlimatic Battles Ever
« on: October 31, 2010, 08:50:29 am »
I've been imagining a battle against a Forgotten Beast.
It begins to cross the bridge that is the only thing separating it from the fort.
A recruit swings his copper axe at it.
The forgotten beast dodges...falling into some magma.

(Hasn't happened to me, I haven't played long enough.0
What's YOUR most anticlimatic battle?
(If it is fictional, mention that.)

DF Modding / Creatures, Reactions, and [ITEMCORPSE]s
« on: October 29, 2010, 10:19:36 pm »
Thi is two questions about how creatures reacts with reactions and the [ITEMCORPSE] token, and one that's more generally about [ITEMCORPSE]s.
1.) Can live creatures be the result or an ingredient in reactions? How about corpses?
2.) Can the [ITEMCORPSE] tag allow creatures to have their bodies become creatures, wheather "trapped" creatures, asteroids monsters, creatures with an artificially low maximum age to represent metamorphosis, or something else?
3.) Can the [ITEMCORPSE] tag be used multiple times, causing creatures to turn into multiple things on death?

Not being a big modder, these questions would be mostly of academic intrest to me...but if I could create an annoying little semi/megabeast that replicated endlessly or mechanical creatures that can be built by dwarves rabbits that "die" into dragons or bronze-collosus-like creatures that release the previously-bound goblin or whatever...I just might be interested enough to try!

DF Modding / New megabeast idea
« on: October 27, 2010, 09:15:19 pm »
Is there any way to make a dragon that , instead of flying, burrows? That seems like lots of Fun.
It could also be applied to other stuff...and all of those things would add more Fun.

DF Community Games & Stories / Ustrozogast Unu, the Goblin Fortress
« on: October 25, 2010, 08:18:47 pm »
I have started a goblin fortress.
Here is the log.

From the journal of Ozud Ngusluzozo, Miner of Ustrozogast Unu
Granite 1
Some genius decided to send me and some other poor fools on a quest in the middle of nowhere to emulate the dwarven underground strongholds. Their logic was, it's much less conspicuous than another obsidian tower. They gathered up me and a half-dozen other citizens of The Disloyalty of Wheels and sent us off, under-equipped. The only upside is that Dad gave my twenty-six trolls, a dozen male and fourteen female, to help me. I figure that the tax credit was part of his motivation, but never mind.
The problem is, some moron decided that our fort with three miners only needed two picks. Plus, Atu the outdoorsman refuses to cut down any trees with the iron greataxe we brought. I said, "If dwarves can cut down trees with little wooden hatchets, why can't you cut one down with that big iron axe we brought?" Ah well; the trolls need tending, and the other who are currently job-deprived need someone to talk to. Maybe when Dostengosp starts work at the stoneshop I'll get a chance to actually help.

Granite 3
I've been busy unloading the wagon recently, and so missed anything important that happened yesterday. Ah well; probably not much. Today we struck Limonite.
Curse those rodents! I just saw a naked mole dog and a giant rat making off with some of our food! Three giant rat hearts and a half-dozen cave fish were stolen. Oh, joy. We need to move our food inside and tie a couple of our trolls up by the front entrance. Sadly, the trolls won't let anyone else tie them, and I can't tie a decent knot. The only one of us that can is too busy mining to teach me. Ugh.

Granite 4
In addition to striking lignite and sardonyx, that naked mole dog made off with three more cave fish. Soon, we'll run out of food. Then we'll starve. The situation is desperate.

------
Letter from Olngo Kutsmobrokub, unofficial leader of Ustrozogast Unu, to Okum Smoxutomo, lawgiver  of Tode Sost, or "The Disloyalty of Wheels."
Alright, Olngo, you win; these parrots are useful for something other than food. I owe you two tame trolls if I get back.
Anyways, I need some information vitally. Some native critters are stealing our food! "Ere the cougars get hungry," indeed! More like "Ere the giant moles and naked rat dogs or something like that get hungry." Unfortunately, the troll breeder's son is the only one who the trolls will let near, and the only one who can tie a strong enough knot, the mason, is too busy to lend the carpenter/miner guy a hand. Ozzed or something, his name is. Anyway, we need to know how to tie a good knot, and a bit of info on the best ways to move food around wouldn't hurt. Oh, and if that Nusluzo or whatever troll breeder you told me about can get trolls to pull wagons, send a caravan. Our woodcutter is apparently too lazy to use a greataxe to cut down trees. Imagine!
Oh, and a bit of knowledge on military organization would be nice, as would some basic cartography if you want to have a clue what things look like.

Sincerely, Your Friend Olngo.
P.S. I know the bet was for three, but I took one off because you sent me to this godsforsaken hellhole.

------------
Alright, I hinted at a few things I don't know.
How do you set restraints?
How do you set stockpiles to flow into one another?
How do you do screenshots? PrintScrn doesn't work.
How do you start a squad?
What use are the minerals I've struck?
How much of this stuff is on the wiki?
I'll check?
Wait, that's not a question?

DF Gameplay Questions / I know how to research troll, etc, butchering!
« on: October 24, 2010, 08:13:23 am »
In the DF wiki, there are many creatures that cannon be butchered.
One of them is the troll.

I was in the arena, seeing how well a few trolls would do against a cougar for my goblin fortress (...it makes sense in context), and after they killed the cougar, they started fighting each other. (On a side note, is there any way to stop that?) I decided to see what happened when I butchered the troll corpse...it worked.

I think that people who care a lot more than I do about this sort of thing should try to advance dwarven science with this. Heck, I'll help...no, wait, I butchered two trolls in that space :(. I'll just have to toss a couple in somewhere else...

EDIT:

DF Gameplay Questions / Slaves To Armok...Goblin Fortress
« on: October 23, 2010, 08:09:30 pm »
I recently started a fortress. After giving skills to the members of the embark party, I went to fiddle with the inventory, get some more boo-wait. There isn't any booze or seeds-mostly meat of various kind. And instead of horses and dogs and cats...there were trolls.
I had started a goblin fortress.
I realized why I hadn't been able to choose kobolds (although my expectations turned out to not be DF kobolds... :()-a civ, and therefore a race, was chosen randomly.

Down to busines. I got a couple dozen trolls, some decent weapons, etc. I have a few questions:
1.) Can a trained goblin and a few (dozen) trolls form an effective military?
2.) Why can't my woodcutter cut down trees? I brought a greataxe!
3.) Can I assign trolls to goblins, and if so how?
4.) Is there any other advice I should have?
5.) I'm thinking of posting a log of this fortress. How do I get screenshots, where would I put the log, and would you be interested?
6.) Is it obvious that this is my first fortress?
