DF Suggestions / Re: Rope interactions
« on: December 11, 2013, 02:20:20 pm »
Let me guess!
Catapault. Rope. Dwarf.
Ballista. Rope. Pig.
Traction bench. Mechanism. Lever. Rope. Tree. Goblin.
Windmill. Rope. Stone.
Minecart. Minecart. Parallel tracks. Chain.

That is all.
Let me guess.
1. Pull back the catapult from far away so you can shoot it from farther away?
2. ...Tie a pig to a ballista bolt and shoot it?
3. No clue.
4. Lift stone with ropes?
5. Chain two mine carts together for some reason?

P.S. When you can't put your ideas in complete sentences and people react by guessing what you mean, try using more detail.

Um...I don't know where to start.

1. While the two games have some similar features, they aren't much alike when you get into the code.
2. Toady's code is a bit...differently-ordered than most peoples', from what I've heard. You can't just rip out the code from Minecraft and stick it into DF.
3. Why would Mojang want to do this? They're a for-profit company, not a charity. They aren't likely to give away code without a reason.
4. Why would Toady want to do this? He's trying to make art, not a marketable game. He wants to do it on his own.
5. Minecraft's display is terrible for top-down stuff, especially when you have more than half a dozen materials to differentiate between. The difference between magnetite and gneiss, for instance, is vital in DF, but with a Minecraft display you almost certainly couldn't see it. And don't get me started on creatures...
6. Real-time animation in DF, which is a "turn"-based game? Um, not happening.
7. The creatures in DF are varied in many ways. Programming models, skins, and animations for the hundreds of creatures in DF right now would probably take as long as one of the more major updates; doing so for the procedurally-generated critters could take as long as it's taken Toady to get this far!
8. There are already many 3D visualizers; use one of those, or draw inspiration from them.
Those come to mind quickly and easily, and should cover the important points.

Most of the suggestions here could be done if there was a better editing of buildings in the RAWs. And I don't know if it's possible right now to choose boulders for reactions (like webs?), but the rest is possible.

I think this is more suited to a mod, since it's for a very specific play style and cluttering the UI with further jobs and buildings seems problematic.
Impossible to mod, actually. Custom reactions can't use environmental features, and they need to be in workshops to be used in fortress mode.

I imagine this is going in, eventually, probably whenever Toady gets around to making workshops...more modular, specific, whatever. One important consideration will need to be making it simple; if you want to build a "butcher's workshop," there should be a simple order that tells the dwarf/dwarves to get butcher's knives, a table, etc, to the right area without you needing to order each piece separately. Ideal world, it would also order the creation of required elements if you didn't have them in mind/stock.

DF Suggestions / Re: Climbing Animals
« on: December 11, 2013, 01:59:43 pm »
That's a neat idea. Since we already have prepared bonobo meat in the game...
If we have meat, we have animals.

Climbing is already implemented, so the only obvious obstacles would be pathing and other AI quirks. Probably.

"Great, just great."

Mos heads out and returns home, before checking his personal "library," Wiccapedia (the amusingly-named community-edited website for assorted magical things), and elsewhere for information on similar phenomena.

Alright, let's see where this goes...

Also, I can't find any of those neat animated Pokemon sprites, with Google being incredibly useless.

Angel set out, glum from her near-perfect record of losses. She tromped through the woods, the Sanct Forest, looking for Pokemon. Anura defeated several of them, despite close calls with some Grass-types. Eventually, she found a nice place to rest and eat lunch.

Soon, she started to hear singing. She looked around. What could it be?
"Anura, I choose you."
The Froakie came out, looked around. Angel could see shadows moving, dancing.
"Fairies?"
It was...tense. Then, one figure stepped out. Green and gray, with a bit of red. A Kirlia.
"Anura, Lick!"
Angel held a quick battle with the fairy, swiftly capturing her. Angel let her out, sharing the rest of her lunch with her new Pokemon.
She glanced at Anura and realized something. He was bigger, standing more on two legs than four. His head was darker and narrower, his eyes smaller, his hands bigger.
"Anura! You evolved!"

Spoiler: Angel Carlson (click to show/hide)

P.S. I can't believe that I can't find any attractive TMs.

Ninja.

That was not a suggestion

Don't you dare.

We haven't even begun and the shipping is in full swing.
Of course. Elf is here.

I'm starting to worry about what it is that I've signed myself up for exactly. :P

Please tell me we're closer to starting, GreatWyrm.
A day closer than we were yesterday!

"[Drakelings'] zeal for knowledge had made them a stronger race than the dragons themselves."
((Implying what, that dragons don't care about knowledge?))

Quote
Age: (Drakelings age physically and mentally twice the times faster than humans)
((I see...))

Name: Drakruldus
Age: 9
Race: Kobold Dragon Drakeling
Specialization: Magic
Appearance: Yellow scales, Somewhat muscular, Rune tattooed on cheek, Ring tattoo around neck, missing end of tail
Other Traits: Inept Magic; Burly
Background: Once an apprentice, Drakruldus was captured by dwarves a couple years ago and forced to act as their servant. He got the trust of his master over the course of a year and a half, before gathering the required items and finally killing him and escaping. He returned home and got his quest to try and make up for losing the final years of training.

Play some badass music to accompany the carnage.
((How about this?))

((1. "VASTLY improved reflexes"? No. Really, her reflexes are only improved a little. Tattletale's would be way better. Probably Regent's, too, if he worked on it--remember his nervous-system-sense thing?
2. She has to work to get the bugs' senses--other than touch and "I exist!"--to be useful.
3. Yes, she can kill people with them...if she uses the power right.
4. So what if Taylor can control krill, slugs, and earthworms? She almost never controls anything except spiders and various winged insects. Other stuff just isn't useful and/or common.))

pictures via googling a lot.
What, exactly, were you googling for the person-sprites?

Also, how is "googling" not a word?
