Putting it next to an organ doesn't impair the organ's function like putting it in the organ would. And, honestly, if you can regenerate well enough to ignore the effects of being blown to bits, and you incorporate foreign matter into your structure, an infection isn't likely to bug you much.

Say, I'm not quite sure what would happen if Beth fell in. Would her wings keep her afloat, or drown her?((Though you can imagine I might be biased, I've come to the decision that Bethany's wings would act as flotation devices...for a little while. She's not a duck, but her feathers would repel water and remain buoyant for a time. Eventually the water would seep through and render them dead weight, tho. I'm also assuming her bone structure became alot more avian to account for her wings, which would greatly reduce her total weight.
