Forum Games and Roleplaying / Re: [D&D 3.5] A world asunder.

So...should my new guy have 54k gold in treasure, or what?

23237
"To ease things along, I second both motions."

23238
"Alex, you are BESMIRCHING THE FAIR LADY. This is UNNACCEPTABLE." Jared says, still in the same tone of voice as a few minuites ago. And volume. "I shall have to challenge you to face me in THE RING OF HONOR should this continue. And then the Colliseum. And THEN THE STADIUM. Break for lunch, then ON TO THE DEATHMATCH PIT!"
Angel wonders if there's a class telling you which god(s) to pray to to avoid running into people like this guy.

She also wonders if the lecture or orientation or whatever is ever going to start.

23239
"Funny, I was hoping for more suggestions...but then, I was also hoping for the Great WG to make a faceshot for himself so I didn't have to do all the expositing around here!"

"Hello, sir. I am Daenashura--"

"Oh. Sorry ab--"

"WHY is everyone TELLING me that? It's getting old!"

"...Sorry about angering you like that. Anyways, how can I help you?"

"I'm starting a quest today. I was hoping for some help, and was hoping for someone to spar with for a basic combat tutorial."

[Luck: 11-5]

"Plainview doesn't have enough guards to keep its drunks orderly, we can't spare anyone to go with you. Moreover, you don't really look tough enough to survive sparring with any humans older than three or four..."

"Damn my lack of hit points..."

"...but if you brought someone a bit tougher, I'd be glad to have him or her spar."

"Great! I know just the guy!"

[Luck: 15]

"We do have a little gear available. We can lend you a heavy wooden shield, a Lesser Ring of Agility, or a set of Leather Armor. You'd need to return whatever you borrowed when you return to town next, though."

"Thanks! I'll choose later and retcon it back into now!"

"...Okay?"

"This stuff starts to make more sense after a while."

"Hey, it's apparently been--"

"Now, we won't be telling anyone about this, will we?"

"Of course. Incidentally, Daenashura's here."

"Oh, goody! Glad to *hic* see you again! A lov'lee little lady!"

[Perception: 7+1-2

"Look, stay away and I won't have to gauge the effect a Sunrod has on elven testicles."

"You're the *hic* boss!"

"Goodie! Now I'm gonna stick you in some old armor, give you a wooden sword, and watch as you get beaten up by big guys!"

"Wait, what?"

"Not that this doesn't sound like a perfectly acceptable team bonding activity, but don't you want to meet your new teammate?"

"Oh, right."

"I know I am. now, meet Faith."

"Hey."

"She is a highly talented Flame Wizard, even if she lacks the drive to accomplish anything greater. She will be suited for the tasks you will find."

"Like I'd need anything else."

"Schweet, another *hic* girl! This is *hic* the best day EVER!"

"Wanna see him get beaten up?"

"Hells yeah."

"Ready for sparring?"

"Yes!"

"Yes!"

"*hi--"

"You there, with more hit points than a sword takes off! Take this, and this! Put this on and use this!"

"Okay, one of us needs to take his robe."

"Your problem, your team, you get the robe."

"Ick..."

"This is the Battle Grid of a small sparring room in the barracks. It has all the characters in the party, plus the guy Ethnolari's fighting. Combat isn't so hard. Firstly is turn order: First the player character(s), namely the lovely, brilliant, modest, clever fairy light monk Daenashura. After that is allies, Ethnolari and Faith. Third is Villains--or other intelligent enemies, like that guy--and fourth is Monsters. Should there be multiple in any one group, Speed rolls will be rolled each turn to figure out who goes first. Attacking requires opposed--"

"When is your turn over, again?"

"Fine."

None!

Alright, two choices:
1. What item, if any, will you borrow?
2. What will Ethnolari do?

((No! Target the number!))

23241
That was the Silicon Oni, my bad.

Your guys are still artificial, though, IIRC. And I don't want them angry.

Even if we take what you claim as all that's needed as actually all that's needed, a claim which I doubt, that still requires no fewer than four gods to collaborate on a single ecosystem. Worms, grass, deer, wolves; any three without the other are doomed.

And, again, I disagree with both the idea that only four species are needed and the idea that making players create every little species that exists makes the game better. You want to restrict the species available for "free" to the bare minimum--that would be excellent! You want to say that any creature with a vaguely interesting physical trait or feature has to be made by a player--fine with me. You want to say that every ecological niche is devastatingly empty until one player spends the time and effort to fill it, regardless of how "interesting" it is? That, Irony, is where my problem comes in. Especially since without those species, all the effort one spends will be wasted.

And what does it bring to the game if every single species is novel, is player-created? None. Whatsoever. The worms, the rats, the flies, the bushes and shrubs, they will be created and then forgotten, because stories about worms, rats, flies, bushes, and shrubs are boring. People care about the humans and elves, the dragons and giants, the sphinxes and gremlins. They want to make the interesting things, and don't care so much for the rest.

So tell me: What does that game design choice add to the game?

23243
They sure sound violent and...what's the right word...not-getting-along-well-with-others...I'd say selfish but I don't want to anger the murderous robots...

Then clearly we have different recollections of the exact same words.

So, we do have to make every little critter and every single plant that needs to exist if we don't want ecosystems to collapse?

23245
((I hope you hit. Otherwise you will SO regret that...))

23246
Clean wound as best as we can. Clean the rest of self as best as we can as a second priority.

Listen carefully.

Hm, let's go over your points.

I can't understand what other people say, specifically what you say.
I can't figure out what things are germane.
Somehow these are relevant to you actually answering my questions.
You are going to answer briefly because I'm too stupid to understand an answer that includes any details you deem "irrelevant".

How about one that doesn't focus on how incapable I am of understanding you?

23248
Cool. Mind if I suggest some sort of "Ship Status" spoiler for when the ships are so different? It could describe the systems, their capabilities, and their damage.

"Ow! ...Huh. My hand's gone. I should probably be concerned about that."

Wait behind the other starboard cannon and fire if the enemy is in sight. Wonder if I could get a reasonably-priced prosthetic arm somewhere.

23249
Two things that were not quite how I'd imagined them.

...Why? Blockading doors with paperwork seems more humane.
