Nuriel and Angel exit their respective classes and head for gym. They get changed into their gym clothes, Nuriel "accidentally" knocking Angel over into the bench as they changed.
"Hey!"

So, superhuman, but not to the extent of (say) WH40k's space marines or the X-Men?

I think someone turned the rooms funny directions before setting them down.

Cool on several levels.

I can't believe I'm being sucked into this.

He was saying it was successful, even if it wasn't cost-effective. The two are unrelated, save by their shared though inverse effect on efficiency.

Are Gray Guards basically specially-chosen humans, or do they have additional characteristics?

23602
Or a strange trait, i.e purple eyes or a blue stripe in their hair.
So they become anime characters?
I'd be more specific. Maybe green hair and little fangs. Anime characteristics in general could designate special people, but there should be more kinds than just the one if we're going that general.

((...Wow. Maria does need biology.
Salamanders are amphibians.))

In Angel and Alistair's English class, they are beginning a grammar unit. They are reviewing parts of speech. Angel is bored.

See if I can turn back human. If so, turn metally again. See if my rubber skin looks human-like.

There should be a small percentage of each race, known as monster whisperers, capable of placating and speaking to inhuman monsters.
Why? Because the implications that a modern society runs on slavery seems....weird in a society that also has elves and dwarves working in some cohesion with humans, if not exactly on good terms.
These Monster Whisperers also have an unconscious ability to increase the intelligence of various creatures.
Not all monsters are intelligent. For those that aren't, being near a Monster Whisperer can increase their intellect to the point that they can understand contracts and whatnot. This also works on mundane animals.
Monster whisperers should also have something to make it known to themselves at the very least.
Say a tattoo or something that they instinctively know makes them a monster whisperer.
Shall we go with a birthmark?

((when should a period end?))
((After about an hour, aka when people tire of a given class.))

Maria....doesn't. She's busy answering questions on lizard anatomy.
((Weren't you doing salamanders?))

I think we can all agree that this is not the place to discuss the Maginot Line, interesting as it may be.
Hence why I was trying to end the discussion.

((I think that we can all agree that the Maginot line was a reasonable gamble that lost because the Germans made a different gamble through a weak point in the line using tactics that the defenders had not anticipated.))

Soul Jar: The soul stars.
Uh, WTF? Did I miss (a lot of) something or did the author misunderstand the trope meaning?
We don't understand much about Soul Stars, but it seems that you're potentially OK as long as they're around.
