General Discussion / GIMP Layers--Help Desired!
« on: May 29, 2013, 08:17:43 pm »
I'm trying to figure out GIMP. The thing that strikes me the most is its use of layers, which seems like it would be rather useful for illustrated suggestion games and the like. I have some things I'd like to do but can't figure out how.

1. Is it possible to move a layer that's smaller than the whole picture's size around within the larger image?
2. How would one bring in a given image previously created as a new layer, e.g. a character "sprite" for an ISG?

And while I'm here:

3. What other features of GIMP do you think would be useful to me?
4. Do you have any suggestions of programs which would work better for my needs?

...Hm. What would that do? Money-based slimery?
As an example. We could also attach it to something else.

Rouler sur Eclaircir et Chanter: A roleplay using an elegantly simple system of dice rolls to determine the results of actions. Set in France in 1848 and inspired by Les Miserables, the players take on the roles of members of the Second French Revolution as they man the barricades or tear them down. Divided into three acts: One Day More, Night of Anguish, and Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. Will feature lyrics for unwritten songs made by your truly as well as some sporadic and badly-translated French. Multiplayer Semi-Cooperative Roleplay.

You'd need to make it longer if you wanted a spear. Or more like a glaive, if you didn't shrink down the ceramic blade.

What about a Naga/Yuan Ti for our solid form? Both are snake like and have arms.
I always imagine naga as being human-headed snakes at most, not those weird four-armed snake dealies. And only yuan-ti abominations are the armed snakes, the others are more human than snake.

But yeah, I like these ideas pretty well.

Wait, we didn't get to loot the boss? But they always have the best gear! Nooooooooo :<
Item get: Giant scorched crab you can't even lift?
It's a boss monster. They ALWAYS have tons of money and equipment that it makes no sense for them to have! ALWAYS!

Especially pants for some reason.
What is this, the Kingdom of Loathing? Don't be silly, it's the Kingdom of...um...

Remember what the Kingdom's name is.

why didn't anyone think about bloodshaping an LMG (light machine gun)?
Because that would probably cost a lot of MSP and be pretty inventory-consuming?

So Slog is dead and Yaos is missing. My god, I understand being a jaded adventurer, but at this point Ciro is acting almost entirely inhuman. Can we get some actual reaction? Or is she just REALLY excited for those items we had before?
Ciro never really connected with Yaos and presumably doesn't adore Slog like many of us do. Okay, definitely not that much. Maybe she read that guide on mercenaries.

Place Bloodshape and Slime Essence into Skill Tree
Become a slime mage!
...I mean really, we'd basically still be able to make whatever we wanted.
Unless we got some bloody slime. Or slimy blood.

Bloodshape a bag or a few so we can take all this sweet loot to Storage. Do so, then absorb the bag(s) and contemplate the full list of items we could fuse with the Skill Tree.

Has anyone considered using a Fountain Pence in the Skill Tree? Fountain Pence + Awesome Essence = ??

That...is not what I thought I said.

Push torso off branch and watch it fall. Words, hopefully the right ones.

Roll To Dodge / Re: Roll To Remember [A Momento Style RTD]

"I don't know why I'm so important to Uncle Dmitri. I guess 'cuz we're family."
"Pft. I didn't think you were smart, but I didn't think you were THAT dumb."
"Uncle Dmitri! Hi!"
"Yeah, 'hi'. Well...I suppose I'm dead now, so it doesn't matter. Firstly, I'm not your uncle."
"Then why--"
"Shut it. If I answered all your questions I'd be here until I died again. Anyways, why you're important...well, you know how your dad suddenly got a new car, remodeled the house, and got you a bunch of new books about two months ago?"
"Of course. How couldn't I?"
"And do you remember an afternoon around then you can't remember anything about?"
"Um...how could I remember something I can't remember anything about?"
"Not as stupid as you seemed. Anyways, what makes you special is the experiment done on you that your parents got paid to let them do. Something metabolic or developmental, I think."
"Why did you say 'The Experiment' so loud?"
"My dialogue is already bolded."
"Aw, I liked the fourth wall..."

Neat. Want to make a coalition?

Lets keep figura between us and the watcher while we talk to it, since the only other gold, male and robed figure we have met so far flattened us.

looking at our inventory, what happened to that fancy sweater we made? Did it get vanished into nothing in our sleep?

... what were we dreaming of that made us get rid of our clothing unconsiously?
Actually, I forgot to add it. I remember that I realized I forgot, but I forgot again by the time I updated again.

This should be fixed by next update.

Hell as it is now is basically made to be a way to end your game, not an Extra Special Easter Egg Bonus Level. Mind you, I'm not trying to insult your ideas, but it's just not what the intent of the current HFS is made for. Until that fundamental element of design choice is altered--as I hope it is--Hell isn't changing much. Once it is, though, I'm sure Hell will be filled with as many kinds of terrifying, gruesome, and unnerving items, characteristics, and features as he can code before remembering the original goal of the update.
Are you sure it's designed as a way to end your game? Do you have evidence from Toady for that?
No specific quotes, but consider...

1. Hell is almost impossible to get into without trying, meaning it wouldn't ruin the game for people who accidentally blundered into it. Well, not much, and given how we all know about it not on accident.
2. Hell is full of demons in absurd numbers and with absurd power, albeit varying somewhat. Each individual demon is somewhere between a semimegabeast and a megabeast in power, if not moreso, and they outnumber many sieges.
3. Hell is barren of almost everything save demons, slade, and some bottomless pits.
4. It's in a file or folder or something called "endgame."

I'm also pretty sure Toady said something to that effect, yes.

DF Suggestions / Re: Suggestions for dwarf psychology
« on: May 29, 2013, 05:14:16 pm »
After all, one of the authoritative descriptions was that dwarves are "strange creatures who balance out at 'happy' because on one hand their wife was eaten by elephants and on the other they just ate in a REALLY NICE dining room."
That's a snarky comment based on game realities. By that kind of logic, Toady should have made elephants into mass-murdering predators with iron hooves and flaming tusks.

Yes yes I realize that this topic is a year old, but one of the best ways to stop a topic from having multiple threads devoted to it is to keep it near the top. This is something that many people will be interested in and I see it as something that newcomers(like my self should have easy access to. To take some of the sting away, I'll add a little of my cynicism to it.
It's fine. The Suggestions Subforum specifically allows nerco'ing of old threads instead of making new ones.

While a complex psychological system is desirable, you need to be careful to not have to many interconnected complex systems or else we'll run into to a simple set of realities: chaos is the predominate force in the universe and in the end everything returns to nothing. Any system that is added to the game needs to be kept to manageable levels of chaos that let people feel like they're in control. The current suggestions in the thread are not just a good starting point, they are also near the limit of what most people could handle giving all of the other existing and planned factors in the game. Of course, horror really needs to be more broadly setup as fear so that we can have a proper, easy to follow scale from "this creeps me out" to "Oh dear God, we're all going to die!!! Such a thing has of course been discussed and fear and morale systems are planned as well as better handling joy/sorrow.

Oh yeah I almost forgot. We's be needs'n da' real Gnomies so's we's can have some REAL havoc in the world. Oh and no thief is feared like a sticky fingered Halfling, especial if they have an enchanted ruby......
Overdone and unneeded. Call me a heathen, but there is non-Tolkienian/Gygaxian fantasy in the world.

And, yeah, the psych system needs work, but it needs to be overhauled, not fiddled. Anything else is just a half-fix, and Toady doesn't halfway fix his (alpha) game anymore than you would jump halfway across a ditch.
