I was protecting them while I was alive! The only thing i didn't protect them from was Vanida.
There weren't exactly many other threats at the squiddles. And you didn't really help them, either. I did more for the dwarves than you did for the squiddles.

It's a series by Scott Westerfield that takes place in a alternate version of WW1 where the Central Powers have mechanical walkers and stuff like that, while the Allies have been able to manipulate DNA and create giant bears, airship-dwarfing flying creatures, and krakens.
Aren't those things a bit...flimsy? It would be kinda pathetic if the Central Powers defeated the Allied air force by giving it a cold...

What do you mean by flimsy? If you are referring to the walkers, they can be pretty cool. The Ottomans get giant elephant walkers, like murmakil but mechanical. Though they never try germ warfare, at least in the text. And these are genetically engineered creatures. When I say bear, I mean a huge bear, like the polar bear from the golden compass. Also the airship is pretty huge.
Why would I be talking about the walkers?
Anyways, living creatures have several innate disadvantages compared to vehicles, most notably cost.
